equal parts terrifying and beautiful, i look at the foothills here and see fields of wind turbines and their red lights blinking in the dark and it gives me the same feeling as looking at the stars the incredible distance between us and the stars has always made me feel small and insignificant and it takes a weight off my shoulders knowing that in the real scheme of things i'm not in charge of much for me it's the same as thinking about the incredible effort that goes into putting up any one of those towers - all the infrastructure that's built and maintained to create these spires of metal, all the people who've spent countless years fighting to accumulate and share knowledge and skills, all the tiny steps from the dawn of mankind to the creation of that something that feels so unnatural, so imposing, so menacing, and to dot the horizon with them in numbers more than i can count all towards a purpose that's greater than me, unknowable to me, impenetrable by me. i know much more about these red lights in the dark than i do any one star, but sometimes they feel even further away from me. i like looking at them and being reminded that i'm not in control. all that's on my plate is to do what i can, where i can. it's freeing.
