His brow furrows at the sound of an all too familiar tapping at his window, pen paused mid-sentence at the voice whispering his name outside. Roman knows instantly that something is wrong; the back of his neck is prickling as he picks up Matt’s tone of distress. This was no late night visit to have some fun - his favourite ‘playmate’ as of the past few months was in trouble, the sound of his knuckles rapping desperately on the glass causes him to launch from his seat and into action without a second thought. The window flies open and Roman instantly sees him dressed in all black, the exposed lower half of his rugged face red as the colour of his actual suit. Matt’s body is bent double, straining with the effort of wrapping his arm tightly around his middle as he somehow manages to remain standing even after having scrambled all the way up here, balanced precariously on the uppermost window ledge. Roman is not gentle in his actions, seizing Matt’s good arm and dragging him bodily through the open window with a snarl. Gunfire follows mere seconds later, glass shattering overhead just as the vigilante hits the floor. Roman drops on top of Matt to cover him, cursing out loud as gleaming shards rain down upon them both, the sound of bullets flying overhead and making a real damn mess of his office. There’s a ringing in his pocket as well as his ears; Horsehead is on the other line and Roman’s fingers scramble to answer his call. "Horsehead! Yeah. I fucking know they’re here. Fuckers shot the goddamn window just as I walking by. Nope, not hurt. Get their asses. See if you can get any of ‘em alive, then call me after!” Roman is seething as he ends the call. The sounds outside are much louder now the window is destroyed, men arguing amongst themselves as they debate whether or not they killed their target, and if they should go inside to make sure he was really dead. More yelling is soon heard as others join the fray - Rocco and Dante bound outside, furious barks booming like thunder as his men set off in hot pursuit after Matt’s would-be killers. Speaking of Matt, Roman rolls off the vigilante with a grunt before staring down at him. Matt’s a goddamn mess, looking (and smelling) like he’d gone to live in the sewers with Killer Croc. Looked like he’d gone ten rounds with the big guy too, a busted lip adding to the blood steadily soaking the upper half of his black shirt.
"The fuck were you doing over on Bane’s turf? And don’t you fucking lie to me, I know his men when I see ‘em.” Roman hisses through gritted teeth. Angry fingers hook into the material of Matt’s hood, pulling it off to reveal the beaten, bloody mess that is the other man’s face. Christ almighty, he looked as though Bane had slammed him face-first into the concrete which, knowing the colossal venom addict, probably had. Roman’s eyes dart to the blood still trickling from Matt’s ear, breathing an audible sigh of relief as his fingertips come away red. Fortunately it’s only blood, no clearness to indicate cerebral fluid loss. He’d relax but it was clear to see that Matt was very, very hurt having just barely escaped death at the hands of Bane’s men, now trusting Roman at his most vulnerable not to kill him or take advantage of his badly beaten state. Well fuck. In for a penny, in for a pound. “One sec, just gonna grab that bottle of whiskey real quick...” Roman grumbles as he crawls over broken glass towards his desk to where the gleaming bottle had miraculously survived the onslaught of bullets. He can’t even smile as a scream is heard outside; frenzied snarling immediately follows as either Rocco or Dante tears into one of the intruders, eliciting an agonized wail as the dogs do their vicious work. A shame really. It was almost poetic that Matt’s hunters now found themselves the ones being hunted in his place.
Roman was his last resort and only option. After days of crawling out of the sewer and making his way towards the outskirts of Gotham, the injuries Bane had inflicted upon him were…absolute. Devastating. Every step he took was more painful than the last but he was not afford to slow down or rest, able to hear his pursuers steadily drawing closer. Bane’s Streetgang hunting him down to finish the job, kill the vigilante all in black, make it known what happens to those who try to stop the villains of Gotham from claiming the city as their own. He didn’t dare lead them back to Wayne Manor or anywhere else for that matter, knowing anywhere he went for shelter would be in danger.
Unless the person he turned to was a villain himself.
“Roman!” Hissing at the window, Matt leaned against the frame, not sure if he could keep himself upright if he hadn’t. The footsteps of his pursuers were growing closer in whatever bravery they had to approach this mansion or in sheer stupidity not to know who it belonged to. He guessed stupidity. Several quick raps on the glass and he began to worry, his throbbing head and busted eardrum making it hard to hear through the wall but the taunts and jeers of the approaching men were clear as day.
It was the same window he had slipped through many times before but for entirely different reason; a physical need for connection rather than safe haven. He would be a sight to see if Roman Sionis ever came to the window, that was for sure; a split lip, blood trailing out of his ear and down his neck, a bruise creeping up his cheekbone under the mask, possible fractured ribs, sprained ankle, the list went on. The voices drew closer and his knocks on the glass grew more frantic, one arm wrapped tightly around his middle as if he could simply hold himself together until he was somewhere safe.
