Things I thought I’d never read: Hybrid fics. For a long time, I thought hybrid and ABO were the same thing. I’m really glad that I stumbled across Lili’s work somehow to show me the difference.

As I told her, I got sucked in on accident. Her formatting makes it incredibly easy to read through her stories, breaking the information into small chunks and each bullet point has a specific purpose. It’s intentional, and I’m fascinated by it as I read. It’s somewhere between outlining and drafting. Something I’d consider incomplete in my own work yet here it’s crafted beautifully. I’m really interested in this unique take on the fanfic drama.

Okay, enough of my nerdiness. Besides being incredibly easy to read, this story is so sweet. The idea of a blind reader interested me. And really, you sometimes forget she’s blind. And if anyone has a blind acquaintance, friend, or family member, you know that’s very easy to do in real life.

The story varies POV. It helps develop each of the characters and connect them to the traits attributed to their hybrid characters. It took me a while to grasp the basics of hybrid fics, this whole “people own them and they are lesser.” There’s this inherent discussion of class struggle in these fics due to their premise, and it’s interesting to see how the Hoseok’s and y/n’s opinions and reactions to maltreatment shape their character.

And overall, (as someone who doesn’t know much about hybrid fics) the animal choices/embodiments were so cute and fun to read. I found myself joining others patiently waiting for updates on this story. I want to see how it goes down for this cute couple, and read more about this shy Hoseok compared to the usual Dom I imagine him as.

- It starts with the bird feeder, 

- Or as Seokjin affectionately calls it ‘Yoongi TV’ or when Yoongi is being especially cute “Kitten TV” which makes him pout and grumble something about Seokjin being about as entertaining as a sea cucumber in a jellyfish exhibit. And makes Namjoon send Yoongi that little half smirk smile- so full of the wolf hybrid’s honeyed dimples that Yoongi just… sort of combusts.

- For being a bird feeder, the birdfeeder is exceptionally bad at feeding the birds and not the brown squirrels and little white striped chipmunks that gather and eat not only the seeds but also Namjoon’s very special heritage breed tomatoes.

- That doesn’t mean that Yoongi doesn’t sit by the door and watch it, making sure to chase them off with a “yah! Get away” and an open door to shout at them periodically. No matter what time of day it is, or if Seokjin is recording an episode of eat Jin, a Q&A, or an apparel announcement.

- His viewers of course make compellations of Seokjin sighing dramatically, yelling at Yoongi, and screaming back “brat! Would it kill you to be quiet?”

- No matter how much the squirrels and chipmunks eat- none of you can ever bring it in yourself to put out a trap or even some poison to get rid of the critters.

- You’ll always laugh; after all, you think it’s adorable when Yoongi’s tail goes all bottlebrush and swishes back and forth sometimes swatting your across the legs or side. In the past year, he’s gotten comfortable enough with you to consent to you wrapping a hand around his tail and stroking it a little before you let it flick out of your grip.  

- The Yoongi before would never dare to admit he liked cuddles. And now? now your morning ritual was for Yoongi to lean his head on your lap, though he does do the same to Namjoon and Seokjin- really it depends on who’s going to be the most likely to give him coffee with extra extra cream on that day. And you’re weak for Yoongi’s purrs. And the nudge of his nose against your hand as he mumbles. “So tired, need so much coffee”

- “Stop being cute” Seokjin will complain when Yoongi lines himself all snuggly along the line of your back in the morning, pouting into the thick fluff of your sweatshirt (the white one with cat ears that Yoongi had demanded you buy a few months ago when it was still cold enough that it was necessary) “I swear I’m not doing anything,”

- Even though that particular type of affection isn’t anything strange in this house- it is a little new for Yoongi, and the three of you are nothing if not respectful of his boundaries. 

- You’re happy with the little kisses he gives you in the stolen moments of the day, when you find yourself spooning Yoongi while you take a break from work, playing with his hands and talking to him about the music he plays on the little radio in the corner of the upstairs bedroom. 

- (The same one that he got the first month here, dragged out of the garbage somewhere, listening to the radio and dancing at 3 am when both of you can’t sleep. a Half asleep Seokjin and Namjoon knocking into each other when they stumble upstairs half asleep to ask after your absence in your bed downstairs. 

- You and Yoongi high on sugar screaming “I love this song!!!” Namjoon and Seokjin happily watching from the door, feeling like every last piece of their family was falling into place)

- They were wrong, there are 4 more pieces waiting to fall into place. you’d never imagined that love was waiting on the other side of the garden fence, the same fence that namjoon grew roses up. Meticulously strapped them to the trellis, the blossoms sweet smelling and soft against fingertips.

The store smelled a lot like plastic.  It was masked by the heavy perfume that the store owner instructed you to spray around in the lingerie section.  

Rows and rows of bright colored panties and bras hung, now likely permanently coated in the cheap perfume that misted down on it daily.

It was only you at the store, as it was most days.  The amount of customers that felt like stopping by a small town sex store in the middle of the day was next to none.  

You sat on the large counter, your legs dangling off the edge as you let out a loud sigh.  Your last customer had been about three hours ago right when your store had opened, and you weren’t sure if you could even call them a customer, they hadn’t bought anything, they merely asked far too many questions about getting the length on their dildo they were going to purchase juuuust right.

Sorry in advance because I read this on a break from lesson planning about literary analysis and I think it crept in a little OOPS.

We see a lot of BTS, but it is still limited by the camera. Yet, this interpretation of Joon felt so raw. I think we forget how fragile all of the boys’ confidence is. When the story got to the part about moving in, I was thinking “here come the quirky dislikes.” I was surprised to see Namjoon exhausted by trying to interpret Her, but it made sense once I asked myself “why?”

Every interview and docuseries has a moment where Joon is concerned about his performance, the group’s progress, the future. He’s constantly thinking of small things, how everything rests on him. This fits so well for him to be worried about being his best and feeling like he is under the “spotlight” of her. His concerns seemed to match the little hints of his character we get in the more personal Bangtan clips.

It’s strange to say that I feel like I learn more about BTS when I read fanfiction, because it is as it reads: fiction. Yet some authors’ works have me guessing deeper into who the boys are, examining their characters in new ways, and I feel like I’m understanding them better even in these hypothetical, fantasized situations. There are parts of their character I ignore or am not paying close enough attention. Reading the works of others who catch things I miss makes their work more enjoyable and also feels like I’m becoming a better fan, in a sense.

Where the hell are all these similes coming from recently? How did you compare someone’s worried thoughts to a rotisserie, making me picture a grocery store deli, and I still was invested? Also, imagining Joon’s thoughts popping like a water balloon while he’s in the shower, gushing out of him along with the water falling off his body, all of it going down the drain, was solid. And a fucking forest metaphor? A FOREST METAPHOR FOR NAMU?

“Real talk, I don’t know if I could be this Y/N” I thought four or five times. I know I’m doing exactly what Namjoon is doing– thinking he’s not enough. In a way, it’s introspective. I think I can’t be this Y/N, but what we are seeing is the viewpoint of someone completely in love with her. When I look back at the scenes, she is really only doing simple things. Wanting hugs, providing quirky comments when he’s anxious. We can all do this for someone and not know what it means to them, what they see. It’s kind of like a confidence boost, imagining that it’s easier than we think to be someone loveable.

Also, sassy Seokjin? Yes, yes, yes. He would fight for those discounts.

Summary: As he makes the final tweaks to his vows on his wedding day, Namjoon reflects on all the ways his fiancée made him a better man.
