Usually classified as beginning after the “fall” of the Roman Empire in the 400s and “ending” as the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery begins, the Middle Ages in European history is divided up into Early, High, and Late Middle Ages. During this period of history the world saw the rise of Islam in the Middle East, bubonic plague (or the Black Death) spread amongst the human population, the Catholic Church (using the post-Reformation term) centralize power across Europe, the beginning and end of the Crusades, feudalism, Gothic architecture, the Magna Carta, rediscoveries of classical texts, the Wars of the Roses, the Hundred Years War, and great advances in medicine in the Middle East.
