“What?!” Monster couldn’t have hoped to hide his shock at such a statement, “Nope, nuh uh, no way! Too risky! You could get hurt!”

Oh man so I have this AU Sonic universe that’s been kicking in my head for a long time and I feel I should document it for posterity’s sake since it’s recently been back on my mind again. The premise is that it’s a SatAM/Archie Comic Pre-Reboot inspired world where Sonic becomes a werehog because he inherited it from his dad.

Many years before Sonic was born, Chuck and Jules were out trying to hunt something that had been terrorizing people on the edge of Mobotropolis, and as a knight it was Chuck’s duty to look into it. What they find ends up being a werewolf, and after a bloody conflict where Jules is badly injured, the beast is slain, but Jules is forever tainted by Dark Gaia, since side note, lycanthropy in this AU Sonic world is caused by Dark Gaia’s corruption. There was nothing out of place at first, but every full moon Jules had to be locked up cause he had no control over himself, and to prevent mass hysteria, and because Chuck was so well-respected, house Acorn agreed to keep Jules’ affliction a secret from the public. It was this affliction that instead prompted Chuck’s research into robotization for medical reasons, for if Jules wasn’t flesh, the curse couldn’t take hold, and indeed as a robot he is freed of the curse.

Before his turning into a robot though, Jules and Bernadette would have their son, Sonic. His superspeed at birth was alarming, but overall seen as a blessing, that perhaps Jules’ affliction had been diluted and given his son a boon instead of a curse. Sonic’s childhood before Robotnik’s takeover was an overall pleasant one, though he was well aware of his father’s suffering. Full moon nights were spent in his parent’s room huddled with his mom as they listened to his father try to escape his bindings in the cellar under the house. Things changed after Sonic turned ten, literally. The ritual of chaining his father and hiding upstairs had already taken place when Sonic came down with a fever and chills, and himself transformed for the very first time. His mother immediately called for Chuck, who upon arrival was shocked to find that Sonic was not feral, but like a puppy. It was then they knew that they had a chance here to give Sonic a better life, that if they could train his werehog self to at least be neutral, that he wouldn’t ever have to worry about harming others.

For the next couple years, Chuck and Bernadette did just that, trained Sonic to behave on full moons. Never bite, never ever bite. Claw only when absolutely necessary, and people are not to be hunted or feared. But most important of all, is that there are those who would hate and kill you if they ever knew of your curse, so you must never tell anyone. These are the things they were able to instill into Sonic before Robotnik’s takeover shook the foundations of their world. Now a part of the rag-tag freedom fighters, Sonic did as Sonic does, be a cocky, courageous and vital asset to the team, which is why everyone hated his fickle nature of sometimes flat out refusing to go on certain night missions. In reality, he was off doing his own training of body and mind, honing his abilities as the werehog, teaching himself to speak and fight if ever the time came to have to fight Eggman in that form.

That time did come, every so often, when he would be forced on missions that had to be done or their window of opportunity would close. The freedom fighters soon came to think that there was some great beast that Eggman had taunted into fighting, that must have been lured from the depths of the forest to sometimes come to their aid. “You guys are imagining things,” Sonic would say with a smirk, “I’ve never seen a forest monster!”

Roar.

Coin’s not buying it. So he decided to cast a spell to monitor Monster’s heartbeat. “Okay, fess up. Why are you worrying about this particular night?”

“Pffff worried? I’m not- I’m not worried what makes you say that?” Monster’s heartbeat betrays him though. “It’s definitely nothing you need to know now if you’ll excuse me can openers don’t buy themselves eh heee.”

“Simple. At night…you hang off a roof or ledge. I distract a person…and you just touch them with your long arms. But since you’ll be up top, you’ll be hard to see.”

Monster smirked and placed a claw to his chin in contemplation. “You know that could totally work! Just hope it’s someone who can take a jok-” Monster’s face flashed with a sudden realization, then a hesitant step back. “Not tonight though, right?”

“Cartoony antics. And from what I heard, you have an ability that allows such fun.”

“Antics huh?” Monster gave him an odd look, having an idea of the ability in question. “The arms you mean? I, guess it’s pretty cartoony…”
