Very cool life update: I am hopefully getting a tattoo of my favorite cave painting ever by someone who is equally obsessed with lost species of humans, I made bread for a friend who biked to get it from me, I have begun packing my belongings, and I think for a moment it is okay.

Something I often have to remind myself of, when trying to understand dunmeshi lore for analysis or fic or whatever, is that many things don’t add up on purpose.

I’ll be sitting there furrowing my brow agonizing over these questions, like... Can resurrection happen outside of dungeons? Can other spells work? Which ones, and what is the limit? How did the demon enter their world? What’s the deal with spirits anyway, why are some classified as monsters and some just part of spells?

Then I will open the single piece of parchment laid at my desk and read the words lovingly written upon it: “little to no pieces of information we receive about magic and history in this story are objective. We understand the world as the characters understand it — through classifications and narratives imposed by society, not inherent to nature. Different cultures, levels of education, prejudices, and desires all impact the things that they, and thus we, believe. This is true in Dungeon Meshi, and it is true in every day life.
