How do you get your colour palettes? Any tips for colours?

I draw a lot of inspiration from cultural clothing (especially mine) so I get a lot of colors from that, I collect books on it so I have a ton to look at and choose from :) I also draw many characters in pieces.

Cultural clothing can have very good (especially earth tone, or neon-specific) palettes. Hope it's helpful for you!

o wise bast, monarch supreme of mimicking the arcana's art style, would you give me some pointers on how to shade long, thick, ✨straight✨ hair? unless i'm just completely forgetting a character, i haven't been able to find a good reference out of the game's sprites :(

thank you so much!! and if not, thanks anyway and keep being the coolest cat in the arcana fandom :)

This is honestly one of the best-phrased asks I’ve ever had. It’s hilarious, thank you

Now, to be upfront, I’m not actually that confident in the details of how hair is shaded in the Arcana. While I get the gist, I’m less good with the precise shapes of it.

image

For reference, Muriel, Nadia, and some of Julian’s wigs are good places to find how they shade long, straight hair. I’d look at the sort of shapes they use at certain edges (which I need to practice). I’d also try to reference real hair and see how light reflects on it.

How do you draw Abodes Dreads/Braids? I'm a black creator and still (embarrassingly) struggle with them in the arcana style. (And in general XD) the way you draw her is gorgeous. And I must know the magic you poses.

Nothing to be embarrassed for! Unfortunately there's not much reference for black hair in the Arcana, so we all have to guess. I'd highly recommend looking at @kianamaiart and Simkray's hair brushes for other examples of stylising black hair (if anyone has examples of black hair in angular art styles, please share!!)

Anyway, I hope this helps!

Dreads and braids are both segmented styles which makes their basic construction similar, however dreads are stiffer and hang less than braids, which are quite heavy

She usually pulls her hair back so I only have to pay attention to the hairline, but I draw each dread as a somewhat stiff tube. Where it connects to the scalp I feather in short, fine lines for the edges/thin hair that's attached to the skin.

To show the twisted texture of dreads, I add curved lines along each one. For me, this is a good balance of detail for the style (though I can still get tired of lineart -_-)

Then, as a final detail, I give Abosede imperfect ends, topping most dreads off with a thin twist. This is optional as some dreads don't have this.

Then finally, for colour. I take reference for how they render ropes and add a series of light lines along each dread. Dreads don't reflect much light, so these are pretty faint.

For some braided hairstyles, you just replace the tubes I use for dreads with a simple plait pattern (as seen in Lucio's masquerade outfit). If you're aiming for cornrows, instead of the segments, draw the tubes along the scalp with sharp ends. Then fill them with a plait pattern. For extra detail, you can hatch lines in between the cornrows where the hair is pulled into the braid.

Braids have stronger highlights than dreads, and I tend to dot them in the centre of each part.

So this is my basic process. If you have more questions, feel free to ask!

tutorial on how I (personally) draw fluffy/curly hair!!

(this does not include hair with very tight curled, or hair with high texture or "coil" curls! i can however attempt a tutorial on that as well :) )

for longer hair styles, or hair that is more wavy or more curly, simply make the bump-slope longer and more loose, or shorter and more tight depending on how you want!

I wish I could explain it better, but this is pretty much what I do! I tend to make fluffy hair at least a decent amount away from the "head", so that it looks less flat and has more volume, as well as having more upward facing "slopes" then down!

please let me know if you have any questions!

Hello! I love your art so much, especially the way you draw hair! I was wondering if you have any tips or tutorials on how to draw it? Either way your art is amazing! Have a wonderful day!

hii ty !! I made a little thing about how i shade hair in my current style hehe

Hello! I Love Your Art So Much, Especially The Way You Draw Hair! I Was Wondering If You Have Any Tips

the main thing is to draw in the direction that the hair is going, to give it shape and volume and gravity! I make up the light source hghh and mostly just go with what i feel looks best in terms of where to put the shadows and highlights. This is such a fast was of shading hair and it is very fun to do ! If you do try it out i hope you enjoy it as well !!

checked your FAQ before asking but i apologize if you’ve been asked this before! i saw that you make your game assets in firealpaca, what brush(es?) and canvas size do you use? i got my start doing digital art in firealpaca but for whatever reason it had never occurred to me that it could be used to make game assets, that’s cool as hell!

Haha, depends on the game! I use the pixel brushes and the regular pen brush with antialiasing turned off. For Astral Guard, it's done in multiples of 16 so it adheres to the grid of RPGMaker 2003. For Susan Taxpayer, everything is contextual to the graphic. So really the canvas size should be whatever fits your needs the best!
