U need to stop. Go put the cargo pants back on. You look super uncomfortable and awkward in that. Brutus, you go be the fake prostitute.”

I care very deeply about the nuance of romanced Dorian’s reaction to being loved.

The surprise, after all the romance scenes and flirting and everything you do for Dorian—he is surprised when the Inquisitor still wants him after they’ve slept together. One can only assume how many times he’s been at that point before, meeting a guy, flirting with him for a while, sleeping with him, his heart all-in—only for the other guy to say some version of “well that was fun” and never really speak to him again. How many times was Dorian’s heart shattered that way? Then there’s the banter where Cole brings up Rilienus.

Cole: “He would have said yes.”

Dorian: “I’ll… thank you not to do that again.”

He presumably wanted a committed relationship with Rilienus, but I can imagine, convinced himself it would hurt less to simply not try than to be rejected (again). So it’s kind of a big deal that he offers commitment to the Inquisitor at all. That already belies a level of trust he has in him.

Everyone that has ever meant anything to Dorian has rejected him. The men he’s been romantically interested in, all his peers, and his father. And each time he’s been rejected, it was to keep up appearances. He’s built a thick skin so to speak around the topic—he laughs about enjoying “pariahood”. He seems fearless in the face of being disliked, by anyone. Shrugs off Mother Giselle’s distaste for him, makes a joking comment about the blacksmith spitting at him when they first met. But the kind of acceptance the Inquisitor has for him, he doesn’t know what to do with, he doesn’t know how to trust it.

He respects the Inquisitor, and explicitly wants them to think well of him. “Yours is the good opinion I care about, not hers.” This is kind of a big admission, coming from him. That he gives a shit what someone thinks of him. The fact that your first kiss with him can come right after that admission is not an afterthought.

And it’s no surprise that his biggest fear in a relationship with the Inquisitor comes down to appearances. He doesn’t care how his own reputation affects him, but he does care about it affecting you. His “anytime” kiss is always in your quarters, and if you kiss him before the romance is officially “locked in”, he’ll tell you why: because he is afraid that other people in Skyhold will see and think less of you for it. In his quest to get his family amulet back, he’s upset when you help him, no matter how you choose to help him, because he knows others will think less of you for it (“I’m the Magister who’s using you”). He’s terrified of his reputation affecting you. That you’ll think less of him for it, or worse, that you’ll pull away from him to salvage your own appearance. That eventually, the weight of his reputation will be too much, and he will be left broken hearted again.

Which is why the scene with romanced Dorian in Trespasser warms my heart so much. Yes, he’s telling you your relationship will be long distance for a while, and that sucks, but in that scene he asserts, confidently, that he wants to be together with you always. “There will always be an us. Nothing can ever truly keep us apart.” He doesn’t pull you into a private corner to have this conversation—he says it in plain view of anyone who happens to walk by. He is confident in the Inquisitor’s love for him, in his commitment to him, and that hits me right in the heart. Dorian feels secure in the fact that someone loves him, possibly for the first time since he was a kid.

I probably could mess with it a bit more, but it already took long enough. This was 2 separate ideas cut so I could tell it the one time. The only change I’ve made is the idea of the Inquisition having a few ships courtesy of Max’s brother Alphonse. The game story is perfect as is I’m only drawing from my playthrough experience. (Although in game Solas was Max’s BFF Cassandra was always the wisest person to talk to. She was even my Divine)

I feel like a lot of people don’t quite get what a butler is. The role tends to get rounded off to ‘male servant’ pretty regularly in some media, whereas actually butlers are typically not just servants but chief servants. The butler was generally in charge of either all male servants or just all servants, period, in the household of an aristocrat or other very wealthy person. This meant that butlers have often been fairly powerful and influential people, and sometimes even had a manservant or two of their own.

(Also, fun fact: Mary Roberts Rinehart, the early 20th century mystery writer who is widely credited with popularizing the whole ‘the butler did it’ trope was nearly murdered by one of her own servants, a chef whom she had passed over for promotion to butler. He came at her with a pistol, but it jammed, allowing her chauffeur time to wrestle it away and restrain him.)

I will say that the protagonist of DA4 does seem like a little freak doing crazy shit with a larger group of little freaks, and that's good. That's natural. That's exactly what any good Dragon Age MC should be. We don't need the divinely appointed crap, the touched by the gods junk, we need some nut causing as many problems as they solve.
