Eleven years ago, Taehyung disappeared from the path he always took while walking home one night after a playdate with you. When his parents filed missing persons report the next morning, the whole town banned together and scoured every empty street and building looking for the innocent boy with his thinly framed glasses and chubby cheeks. They didn’t find him, not after the first night, and not even the second when degrees reached freezing temperatures, cold enough to kill any boy alone and vulnerable. The longer he was gone, the more you worried. What could you do when you were that young—just seven years old—but desperately hope for his safe return?

They found him the third night, wandering the deepest parts of the woods on the outskirts of town, staring at the flashlights like a deer caught in headlights with no recollection of what had happened to him. He had nothing but the tattered clothes on his back and an open wound on his shoulder they soon discovered to be an animal bite mark. Unable to recall how he ended up with those wounds doctors assumed he was attacked by a rabid animal and administered a dose of rabies vaccinations just to be safe.

And when the round of doctors and cops, along with child therapists, were done with him, he was free to go home and adjust back to his normal routine, but nothing would ever be normal for him again.

Although you visited him every day to comfort him when he was in the hospital when he was released the only times you ever got to see him was at school. Even then, he wasn’t fully there with you, he was reserved and easily irritable whenever kids would pester him about what happened in the woods. One day he shoved a boy into the dirt for being too nosey which earned him a week of detention for bad behavior.

And when Taehyung wasn’t fighting with kids at school, he was at couped up at home all day. His parents no longer let him go out to visit you and they no longer allowed you to visit him, always slamming the door every time they saw your tiny figure standing on their porch. You were always disappointed, desperately wanting your friend back and your parents didn’t make it any better with their guilt, constantly blaming themselves for not making sure Taehyung got home safely that night.

Almost a month after the incident, Taehyung stopped coming to school altogether.

Due to his unexplained absence and behavior, there was an odd rumor poisoning the water that the Kim’s believed their only son was possessed, those sinister woods had done something terrible to their sweet little boy and now he was nothing but a shell for a demon. Your neighbors said his parents had invited an exorcist into their home to rid their son of the darkness inside of him. But this was nothing more than an exaggerated rumor you chose to ignore. It couldn’t be your best friend.  

No one truly knows what happened behind the walls of their family home, but the day after a full moon your best friend was gone. The only explanation being his parents had had enough of his bad attitude and shipped him off to some kind of reformatory school for adjustment—to fix what was not broken, to fix what he could not help. The family pretended they were okay as if they didn’t send their only child away after such a traumatic event and pretended he never existed, erasing him from their lives completely.
