Hey hey hey
Some days are for brainstorming.
Other days are for writing a ton of words.
Still other days are for listening to your WIPâs playlist and staring at the ceiling for hours.
Rather than fighting your brain to do what you had PLANNED for the day, go with what your brain can handle right now.
Meaning: if you have tried writing a ton of words today, but all you REALLY want to do is brainstorm, THEN BRAINSTORM.
Try to recognize the value of your workflow. Let it run wild! Go for it! Encourage it and watch your writing thrive!

What are core values, and how do you pick them for your characters? (Part I of Core Values)
A core value is a fundamental belief your character holds, one that is so obvious to them that they cannot explain it. A character's decisions will always be guided by their core values. Some examples:
Integrity means a character will stick to their moral code; often links to the core values of Honesty, Trustworthiness, and Loyalty.
Justice means a character will seek to right wrongs, whether caused by someone else or themselves.
Autonomy means a character needs to guide their own path and not be told what to do by others.
Loyalty means a character will act in a way that will benefit those to whom they are loyal, whether that's a family member, friend, or another individual (or organization) that has earned their loyalty.
Survival means a character will do whatever it takes to keep themselves alive.
Family means a character puts family above all else; strongly linked to Loyalty.
Personal gain means a character will do anything for wealth or other commodities.
Reputation means a character is concerned about how they appear to others and will do anything to make sure others see them as they wish to be seen.
How do you pick core values for your characters?
Core values are the root of all motivation, but there are a lot of ways to figure out what they are. The answer to the titular question depends on how you like to create your characters.
Some writers start with a basic character 'picture,' like "strong-willed airship pilot on an adventure for lost treasure". Other writers start with a character-story hybrid, such as "grumpy, asocial wasteland survivalist who discovers what it means to be part of a found family."
Still others might have an entirely different approach, but these are the two I'll focus on today.
Building your character "values-first"
You may wish to decide your character's core values first to figure out what situations to put them in. Choose 2 or 3 to start. The "grumpy, asocial wasteland survivalist" character has values already baked into the concept. They value their Privacy/Autonomy and will prioritize Survival, but eventually, their Loyalty will prove more important. Try this: Write a blurb for each value you've picked that explains how this value affects their life.
Discovering your character's values as you write
On the other hand, you could start writing first and let the character tell you what they value based on their actions. For instance, let's say your strong-willed airship pilot just turned down a lucrative job because they want to be a trailblazer, not a follower. You didn't know they were going to do that! Here, your character has just demonstrated that they value Autonomy above Personal gain. Try this: Like in the above example, figure out why your character took a specific action, then translate that into a core value.
Add your answers for both exercises to your character bible for later reference.
How do you figure out your characters' motivations? Tell me!
I welcome additions to this post! If you have another method for figuring out what motivates your characters, I'd love to hear about it.
I'm going to make a few more posts about core values, including "how to keep your characters 'in-character'" and how to create conflict based on core values. They'll all be in the core values tag on my blog once they're up, and I'll edit this post with links as well.

Yoongi is a Rock
Thatâs it. Thatâs the plot. Yoongi is a rock. Enjoy! :D And Happy Halloween! This is my treat for you!
rock!Yoongi x reader :D fluff a bit of angst a lot of silliness
Word Count 1.3k
---
Yoongi is a rock, so he doesnât have much thought. But perhaps, for a rock, his thoughts are a lot.
Yoongi is a rock, so doesnât have ears, but he can hear, how the wind whips around his solid rock build. He doesnât have eyes, but he can see, your smile as you climb the other rocks to be with him for a while. And he doesnât have a mouth to protest the way you step on his surface, shoes full of dirt as you pull yourself up and lay your body down, but he doesnât seem to mind, because youâre here with him now.
What Yoongi does have is memories, so many for a rock. He remembers the days it took for his rough edges to smooth, the water that slowly disappeared and left him all alone. Surrounded by fish and then surrounded by nothing.
He remembers the sunlight that filled the waterâs absence, the heat he felt for the first time and the trees that grew around him. So many memories, he lived for days and days, not really living, but wearing away. The endlessness, the memories, alone he stayed. He didnât mind, as a rock, the way time took parts of him away. He didnât mind for days, until he met you.
When he first met you, you were young and free. Would tumble and play around him, all day in the breeze.
Never near him, always in the soft grassy plain or in the trees, of course you would choose to sit in the softness of the earth. It was not hard, like a rock, like Yoongi, would be.
Until one day you did choose Yoongi, climbing with your small limbs over the terrain until you reached the peak, atop the world, looking down at the sea of green, the same sights Yoongi would see.
You drew on him with chalk, a new look for the rock. He became so much more, a flower, a bee, a face, a home, a heart, your spot, it made him happy. When the rain showered down, and splattered away your heart, he went back to being a rock. But Yoongi was changed, more than he thought.
You came back and you played. And your laughter filled the windâs silence, and your smile shone brighter than the sun, in Yoongiâs opinion, who lived much longer than you, and knew the sunâs rays much better than you.
Then when you grew a bit older, you found solace at the peak of your world, where Yoongi stayed grounded and reliable, and all yours.
At day time youâd let the sun warm your body, giving Yoongi some shade. And at night time youâd watch the stars, and tell Yoongi about your day. It was a routine, like most of Yoongi's rock life, but became something Yoongi began to look forward to, as a rock with nowhere to go. It was a routine Yoongi didnât want to let go.
When school started, you talked about your school days, your loneliness, your bullies, and Yoongi longed to grow limbs and follow you back to teach those bullies a lesson, but Yoongi was a rock, and that just wasnât going to happen.
You worked on your homework, pages and books splayed over and shifting in the wind, groaning over problems, sketching hearts into Yoongi instead, until dinner came and you left Yoongi again.
And Yoongi waited. Because well, as a rock, there was nothing else he could do but wait. And wait, he did. He waited for you.
He waited and watched and waited and heard, for any signs when youâd return.
And one day you brought a boy to your special place, laid down a blanket and talked to him instead of Yoongi. And that boy kissed you, and if Yoongi had a heart, it might have cracked, but his hearts were graphite and chalk, and already washed away, so Yoongi endured, listened to your laughter, happy you came back.
And one day you came running, stood high and screamed, and then cried and cried and cried, lying on your side, for you really had a heart, and in your first heartache all you wanted to do was be alone, on the top of the world, atop the place where it felt like home.
Yoongi felt your tears, it reminded him of the sea, and as you cried he thought, things are not lost forever, and one day you too will see.
And one day you came dancing, your dress blowing in the breeze, and sat again and told him about your life like the days when you were young and Yoongi thought, in all the years he lived as rock, and all the things heâd seen, you were by far the most beautiful creature in the world to him.
You were his rock. His connection to something more than wind and grass and trees, you were a piece of humanity that Yoongi yearned to see.
And one day, it was not you who came, but men in yellow hats and thick boots and metal in their hands. They came back again and again, with larger tools and metal machinery and more and more, and the grass and trees you loved so much were cut down and destroyed, but not Yoongi.
And when you finally came back to Yoongi, eyes filled with shock, you questioned and pleaded with the men to stop, but they had a job to do, and laughed at you, and Yoongi stayed, full of pain at your hurt, and wished he was a man too, so he could protect you.
When the men had gone, you snuck back in, and watched the stars, fearing it will be your last, and wished you were a rock, so you didnât have to go back. And you told Yoongi about your life with tears in your eyes, and you told him how you missed this place, and wished for things to change. You wished you had come back sooner, protected this place instead.
You stayed all night, looking at the stars, you stayed until you fell asleep, and woke up to machinery and men telling you to leave. Yoongi heard the grinding gears and your cries telling them to stop, and he felt the ground beneath him shake, and everything lifting up.
He wished he could tell you not to cry, not to worry, that it will be alright. Yoongi lived as a rock for years and years, becoming less and less, until you came and made him whole and left him with no regret.
And when Yoongi cracked he thought of you, and when Yoongi broke he thought of you, and when he scattered and turned to sand what was left of him was you.
---
---
âHey sleepy head. You sleep like a rock.â
Yoongi woke up to your lazy kisses against his cheek. He shuddered awake, eyes adjusting to the sunlight filling your bedroom.
âAre you okay?â
âYeah,â his voice gruff from sleep, âI just had a strange dream.â
âHmm okay.â You yawn and hold him closer. âWhat did you want to do today?â
Yoongi grunts, his fingers finding yours, interlacing them together. âA picnic?â
âReally?â Yoongi smiles at the excitement in your voice, pulling you closer, laying kisses on your forehead, breathing in deep.
âI love you.â
âI love you too.â

Ever read The Giving Tree? I havenât read it in so long but itâs a story that I still think about decades later, this is somewhat inspired by it. I am very proud of this silly story, so I am going to log off and try not to take it personally if this doesnât get a lot of notes lol, but know if you do choose to show your love, it touches me deeply.
So I originally intended this to be a drabble for my story HOAL, you may or may not choose to view it as part of HOAL universe, set in a future we have not gotten to yet in the story lol. <3

sequel:Â Will You(ngi) Marry Me?Â

Here he is now, currently regretting his inability to ever say no to your whims as he watches you skip with a couple of slips and twisted ankles along the way to the front of the small darkened room and snatch the mic off its stand. Youâre bent over the karaoke machine, clumsily swiping the screen to find the song you want. After several more swipes, you squeal excitedly⌠and then he hears it. The reason for your excitement. The all too familiar jingling of church and sleigh bells elicits an embarrassed groan from him. You turn to face your small audience and after taking an unreasonably deep breath, you close your eyes and sing.
âI⌠donât want a lot for Christmas. There is just one thing I needâŚâ
âSing it girl!â Hoseok cheers, thrusting a newly opened glass bottle into the air.
âAaall I want for ChristmasâŚâ
âWHAT DO YOU WANT Y/N?!â Hoseok shrieks over the music.
ââŚiiiiiiss YOOOOUUâŚNGIII!!!â You hunch over to belt out the last note and your hair falls over your face but he doesnât need to see you to know your features are scrunched up in order to sing past your lung capacity.

pairing: namjoon x reader
summary:Â You think it ends with you saving a fox. That is, until you start getting love letters sent to your doorstep and little knick knacks left on your window sill.
genre: fox shifter!namjoon, witch!reader, fluff
words: 4.5k
a/n: this was meant for the bingo challenge but completely escaped its original prompt. anyway. heres shy!lovestruck!namjoon bc i love him. also no this is nOt a witch au blog idk whats wrong w me

A finch flutters onto your windowsill, and you shuffle over once you hear a tap, tap, tap on the glass. You push it open and the bird hops inside, beak leaning forward tentatively.
You take the letter. âAh, so they sent you this time?â Or maybe the finch volunteered, you wouldnât be surprised. They are quite the gossips.
Itâs a soft blue envelope, and when you turn it over thereâs a scrawled #12 on the left side corner. You think that even if he hadnât written that, youâd know. Itâs easy to keep track, after all.
A maple leaf slips out when you open the envelope. You set it aside and tentatively take the letter, brush a hand over the ink. It was written by hand in messy but deliberate hand writing and it smells like chamomile and honey, like it was written under a half-moon.
You read it once then twice then three times until it feels like youâve been dipped halfway underwater, until the buzzing of the midday cicadas has faded into white noise and everything is suddenly tinged blue.
The man, you deduced a while ago, tells tales of palm trees and blue ponds and red and pink frogs, of catching crabs on a stranded shore. Heâs writing poetry but heâs not, writing reality but heâs not, and you donât know how he does it, how he can make five paintings with just one phrase.
You clutch the letter to your chest, feel yourself have an out of body experience because of a not-poem. Your head whips towards the finch when it chirps suddenly, and you huff.
âWhyâre you still here?â You shield the letter from the birdâs eyes. Its head tilts. âAnd donât give me that look, I know exactly what youâre thinking.â
The bird only gives another chirp before flying away.
You scoff out a laugh, and when you walk towards your bedside table, the drawer opens before you can even think too much about it. You glare at your walls before tucking the letter with the others, as if to stop the house from teasing you too much.

It's official. Every chapter that comes out becomes my immediate favourite 𤣠Worse is that I can relate to it so much since I'm just horrible in the kitchen. I'm late to discovering this gem (like everything thing else ugh *face palm*) but I NEED to say that this chapter right here is the ABSOLUTE đđť BOMB đđť (no pun intended... i think?)
The writing is sooooo good for sooo many reasons and I don't think I would be able to do it justice but let me just rant..!!
1) Characters - EACH one is so fully fleshed out and written. Just the multitude and absolute tsunami of emotions each one brings out when reading about them. I have difficulty writing 1 character let alone balancing 9 (YES, 9) and at times, even referencing the audience/readers as well?! OMG 𤯠How does your brain even??
2) Dynamics/Plot- Of course I have to talk about this. With characters so fleshed out, you would think it would be easy to just write. No. It really isn't. The plot is kept alive while exploring and revealing the intricacies of each and every character. This chapter giving such an emotional sucker punch to the gut is just testament of how character-driven and focused it was. *chef's kiss*
3) Writing - Need I say more???!

Just this chapter was sooo well executed it HURT (in all the best ways possible).
I'm still reeling AND I've only read till this chapter so far. It is so strange to me since, my only relationship with reality shows is just watching Gordan Ramsey calling other human beings idiot sandwiches and muppets. Yet I am SO INVESTED. I don't even know who I'm rooting for anymore. Ugh, so much feels. Too much and I'm ALL FOR IT. Alexa, play 'The Feels' please.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS LITERARY MASTERPIECE đ I'm ready! (I hope so??) for the rest to come. Also I've ranted too much I'm going to retreat back into my cave now... Sending lots of hugs and love đ

DAY FOURTEEN
Thereâs something exciting and indulgent about sitting apart from Taehyung and Jimin, yet sharing secret glances and muffled smiles.
Youâd had to leave Taehyungâs room at different times, you and Jimin sneaking back to your respective rooms to change out of his clothes so it didnât look odd.
As the eight of you gather in the lounge, sleepily curled up with mugs of coffee or lying back against the couch for a few more moments of peace, the familiar faces of the others send a pang of guilt through you. Like you were lying to them. Omission is a type of lie, you suppose, but you try and smother the feeling. Youâre allowed to be selfish.
Especially when it made Taehyung and Jimin look so happy.
Taehyung, who was almost always cheerful much like the puppy you saw last night, now looks like he canât even contain it, his toes wiggling and eyes gleaming. Jimin, who on the other hand tended to be a little stiff and wary during these meetings, seemed more at ease than heâs ever been in front of everyone.
Could the others really blame you for wanting to see them happy?
You bite down hard on your tongue as Sejin arrives, the final piece in the puzzle. Maybe they could. You count your lucky blessings you donât have to pick a favourite as well as someone to eliminate. Staying objective and making a decision tomorrow would be hard enough.
âAre we all ready?â Sejin checks, consulting with his watch to ensure it was in fact nine on the dot.
Catching everyone off guard, itâs Jungkook that speaks up, sitting beside you with crossed legs. âReady, PD!â

Pokemon types for BTS as gym leaders? YES PLEASE!
LET'S GET ITTTTTTT
To explain, Gym Leaders are strong trainers that award you Badges that allow PokĂŠmon up to a certain level to obey you. If your PokĂŠmon are beyond the level of your Badges, they will "loaf around" (literally, they will lay around and go to sleep lmao) XD
in fanchant order (because ofc)
--
Kim Namjoon
Type: Grass
Signature PokĂŠmon: Lurantis

We all know Namjoon loves plants (and tiny crabs lmao). Personally, I find the Grass-types to have the cutest pre-evolved forms and imagining Namjoon surrounded by a bunch of them sounds adorable as fuck. Plus, imagine Namjoon with a Torterra and a Leafeon? :D
You might be wondering, "why the elegant Lurnatis?" Look up its pre-evolution, Fomatis! ISN"T IT SO FREAKING CUTE??? I imagine Namjoon recusing this little one, taking care of it every day, and it hangs around on his broad shoulder as Namjoon rides his bike around town, soaking up sunlight, perhaps witnessing the occasional clumsy accident (oop). Because Namjoon always protects Fomantis, Fomantis evolves into the elegant Lurantis to protect its Trainer! (not me making this a whole ass au already lol)
--
Kim Seokjin
Type: Water
Signature PokĂŠmon: Milotic

Fishing fanatic Seokjin must be a Water-type trainer. No, there is no SUPERTUNA PokĂŠmon, otherwise you know I would have totally given him one XD He may also have a Gyarados, evolution of Magikarp, as well - lmao, just imagine Seokjin taking care of Feebas and Magikarp ("Gah, stop flopping around!") but he would take care of them lovingly, maybe low-key think they're ugly but he's (worldwide) handsome enough to make up for it LOL and once Feebas evolves into Milotic, Seokjin will definitely enter PokĂŠmon Contests with his beautiful PokĂŠmon! :D
He would have a Lapras because 1) beautiful, 2) cute, 3) practical, and Seokjin is all about that. And he would have a Clawitzer. Why? Look at its pre-evolution, Clauncher.

YOU CANNOT TELL ME SEOKJIN WOULDN'T PICK UP A CLAUNCHER AND PRETEND IT WAS A PHONE LMAO "HELLO?" plus when it turns into a Clawitzer, Seokjin would 100% pretend shoot people with his lobster, only for it to actually blast people in the face with water XD
--
Min Yoongi
Type: Fire (bultaoreune, come on, I had to do it lol)
Signature Pokemon: Incineroar

Yes. I went there. At first I was going to give him Dark-type, but FIREEEEEEE (ok, I'll stop now lol) How perfect is Incineroar? Firstly, Litten is a cute af cat, second Torracat is EVEN cuter, and, thirdly, Yoongi enjoys both WWE back in the day and UFC now! If anyone can control an Incineroar in a calm manner, it's definitely Yoongi.
I don't see Yoongi as a typical high-energy Fire-type trainer. He's more reserved, but you can tell by his PokĂŠmon that you don't wanna mess with him (haters, go ahead and talk real big until Yoongi says 'Burn It' XD). He probably uses the more niche Fire-type PokĂŠmon like Chandelure and a (Hisuian) Arcanine. Day to day he seems lazy, but in battle Yoongi gets fired up (just like on stage hahaha)!
Also imagine Yoongi cooking with his Fire-Type PokĂŠmon uwu

Jung Hoseok
Type: Electric
Signature PokĂŠmon: Pachirisu

"... wiyllt... are you trolling me rn?"
XD I chose Pachirisu for multiple reasons: 1) Hoseok is the squirrel emoji + acorn bag enthusiast; 2) he will be a doubles Gym Leader, meaning he and you will send out two PokĂŠmon at a time, requiring a different strategy to all the other Gym Leaders; 3) I mean... look at it; and 4) look up World Champion Pachirisu.
Yes, Pachirisu won the PokĂŠmon World Championships in 2014 and his trainer was from Korea! :D (Did you know PokĂŠmon have a World Championship competition? Now you do LOL) Pachirisu is pretty tanky and offers special moves that make it perfect for double battles.
His other PokĂŠmon would be Heliolisk, Luxray and Toxtricity (Amped Form, Jolly Nature), both of which have cute and unique pre-evolutions (Shinx and Toxel). You better believe they're all dodging moves with dance!

Park Jimin
Type: Fairy
Signature PokĂŠmon: Florges

To be honest, there are so many Fairy Pokemon that suit Jimin: Togekiss, Whimsicott, Hatterene, Gardevoir, Sylveon, etc. If Tumblr didn't limit me to 10 images per post, I would show you all of them, but alas (Tumblr, you rat >:| ). Anyway, pretty-as-a-flower fairy Jimin would have a Florges for sure (probably a white one tbh). Just like him, it would be a total mistake to think the fluffy, beautiful Fairy-types are weak - in fact, they're super-effective vs the fearsome Dragon-types (and Dark and Fighting types)!
Is it because they can seduce anyone with their good looks and their aromatic scent? (and Florges does look a bit sassy too, no? lol) Why do I think Jimin smells good? He probably does. Someone confirm for me. XD
Ah, and since Fairy is strong against Fighting-type... hm, did you know that the only way a certain maknae has ever been beaten is because he was bitten in the neck by a Fairy-type? XD Jimin was born in Busan first!
--
Kim Taehyung
Type: Rock
Signature PokĂŠmon: Lycanroc

I feel like I need to explain, look at it's pre-evolution, Rockruff

LOOK AT HIM, WHAT A GOOD BOY
Although it was tempting to assign Taehyung to Normal-type so I could give him a bear PokĂŠmon (lol), the sturdy and strong Rock-type seemed to suit him better. Not only that, but also the pre-evolved Rock-type PokĂŠmon are adorable - such as Roggenrola, Aron, Larvitar - but all evolve into tough, cool-looking Pokemon - Gigalith, Aggron, Tyranitar, respectively.
There's also er... unique ones like Sudowoodo and Omastar (praise Lord Helix, if you know, you know). I believe Taehyung would appreciate these funny, weird PokĂŠmon to the fullest. XD
He would pretend to be a tree in Namjoon's gym with Sudowoodo.
I know he would LOL
--
Jeon Jungkook
Type: Fighting
Signature PokĂŠmon: Lucario

and of course he would have a Hitmonchan, boxing fanatic JK must have one
Not only does Lucario remind us of Bam (although there is a Doberman Fire/Dark Pokemon, Houndoom, a bit EDGY for Jungkook, but perhaps not for PTD JK lol), but also Lucario only evolves through friendship. It must form a close bond with its Trainer to evolve, which perfectly suits Jungkook. I also imagine JK to have a graceful Gallade, maybe even a Machamp! :D
He definitely has Falinks marching around the Gym, just because they're funny and make him laugh HAHAHAHA
Jungkook might possibly also abandon his post to go on a journey with the legendary PokĂŠmon Kubfu, oop

"Wait wiyllt, that's only 7 Gym Leaders. Who's the 8th?"
me.
me and my gang of six Scrafty

LMAO
XD
I spent way too much time on this lol
Angst fics can help people come to terms with their own grief, begin healing, or give people that good cry that they need.
Smut fics can help people affirm and accept their sexuality. It can help them explore their sexuality in a safe way. They can also just be fun, and having fun is a drastically undervalued way to improve your mental health.
Dark fics can help people face their fears or process their trauma. It can make them feel safer and more secure. It can help them find their courage.
Fluff fics can give people rest and respite and comfort. It can give them hope that soft places exist and that maybe there is one out there for them. It can bring up their mood, which, if they have depression, can be a life saver.
And every fic people write makes someone feel less alone.
Point being, just because a particular thing doesnât serve you, doesnât mean it lacks value.
This is not to say that we have to consume all fic uncritically. Of course not. It is just to say that entire âgenresâ arenât trash or lacking value just because they donât serve you.
Awwww! Am totally in love with this series be it the writing style, the characterisation, the pictures at the end are all *chef's kiss* for some reason though daechwita agust d kept appearing in my head while reading this đ can't wait for the next one! đ

moon's guide to posting on tumblr*
*note that this information can change like the drop of a hat because of this goddamn hellsite (affectionate; deragatory)
hi yall welcome to moon's guide to posting on tumblr aka tips and tricks that i've learned that WORKS FOR ME (but may not work for you; see above)
always use google chrome (incognito imo is the best way to do this)
the first 20 tags matter most; the rest are arbitrary
pls don't put nsfw warnings in the tags. tumblr will eat it. (put it in the post itself)
if it doesn't show up within the first 5-10 minutes, make a new post and tag again.
edit your hyperlinks in AFTER you make sure the post shows up in the tags.
"you can only tag 50 ppl" is a myth (SO FAR). in my most recent fic (which had over 50+ ppl tagged already), i edited + tagged one of my sideblogs and i still got the notification.
try not to queue your post/save it as a draft. it's been a hit and miss whether they show up in the tags when i post.
whether you use the new post editor or not doesn't really matter (in my experience). i prefer the new post editor so i use that đ¤ˇââď¸
if things still don't work (aka troubleshooting):
wait until the next day
sign out + sign back in
restart your computer
double check AGAIN that you are on google chrome, no nsfw tags, etc.
this is all i can come up with đ it's a nightmare that we have to jump through hoops, but i hope it's helpful! i would HIGHLY recommend having your own tag for your content so you can check if it shows up there. the more unique the better. if you need any more assistance, lmk!
101 Comment Starters
I began working on this last summer. Like many veteran fanfiction authors, I lament the decline in commenting that Iâve seen in my fandom, the Tolkien fandom. Iâm also a humanities teacher, so I spend a good part of my day teaching young people how to write, and one lesson Iâve learned the hard way is that each type of writing involves unique skills that have to be learned. And commenting is a unique form of writing and one that comes with added stresses around social expectations and public performance. My research on the Tolkien fanfic community confirms this: Many people want to comment, but they simply donât know what to say.
As a teacher of writing, I often use sentence starters or mentor sentences. The writer uses these to jumpstart their thinking and writing, until they become comfortable enough to begin working independently. â101 Comment Startersâ is built around this research-based strategy of teaching writing.
Some of the comment starters are simple enough that they can be merely copied and pasted. Others require filling in some blanks or providing some elaboration. In some cases, a because can be dropped if the reader isnât comfortable providing that level of elaboration yet. In other cases, a more experienced commenter can add the because and elaborate more on their comment.
They also differ in their level of praise. They range from simple statements of how the author made the reader feel to compliments around an aspect of the authorâs writing or their work in general. Iâve tried to limit words like really, very, and so as much as possible, except when it made the comment feel wooden. Youâre welcome, of course, to add those words in if you feel they more accurately help capture how a story impacted you.
If youâre just starting to comment, please keep in mind that the vast majority of authors will love to hear from you! They donât care how long or elaborate your comment is. They donât care if your English is perfect or if youâre a little awkward. They just want to know that youâre reading and enjoying their work.
Finally, please feel free to reblog and share and add your own comment starters!

Dead eyes stare blankly ahead.
Yoongi sighs. He doesnât really enjoy this part.
âDid it really have to come to this?â His counterpart stays quiet. No blubbering coming out of his mouth.
âNo answer, huh?â He wipes the knife on his apron. The corner of his lips twist into a smirk that once upon a time had reduced the toughest men to little heaps of misery.
A red stain colours his pristine white apron.
âYou really donât provide entertaining company,â Yoongi sighs and works quickly. He doesnât like leaving a mess.
Heâs always been known for his precise knife work and today is no exception.
When he is done, he rewards his victim with a last glance.

Why BTS loves ARMY: RM version

Really loving this tumblr feature where it forces me to view posts I donât want to see from blogs I donât follow
The significance of plot without conflict
In the West, plot is commonly thought to revolve around conflict: a confrontation between two or more elements, in which one ultimately dominates the other. The standard three- and five-act plot structuresâwhich permeate Western mediaâhave conflict written into their very foundations. A âproblemâ appears near the end of the first act; and, in the second act, the conflict generated by this problem takes center stage. Conflict is used to create reader involvement even by many post-modern writers, whose work otherwise defies traditional structure.
The necessity of conflict is preached as a kind of dogma by contemporary writersâ workshops and Internet âguidesâ to writing. A plot without conflict is considered dull; some even go so far as to call it impossible. This has influenced not only fiction, but writing in generalâarguably even philosophy. Yet, is there any truth to this belief? Does plot necessarily hinge on conflict? No. Such claims are a product of the Westâs insularity. For countless centuries, Chinese and Japanese writers have used a plot structure that does not have conflict âbuilt inâ, so to speak. Rather, it relies on exposition and contrast to generate interest. This structure is known as kishĹtenketsu.

Here's to BTS.
Hereâs to Rap Monster, who has dreamed of this moment since his debut. Who used to perform as an underground artist as a student and who led his group so well despite his young age, despite of his uncertainty and fear for the future. Who gave up entering a good university for his passion for music and has spent nearly every night writing lyrics and making songs even till the early morning, even while waiting to go up on stage and even when they are on the plane flying to their next event. Who always writes such thoughtful tangents on loving ourselves, trusting our youth and our passion, forgiving ourselves, and appreciating everything that we have in this world. Who shows us every side to him even though heâs scared of the vulnerability. Who never forgets to thank those around him even if he does not know them personally. Who always thinks of us wherever he goes and who is always rooting for us in whatever we do. Truly without him, BTS would not be the BTS that they are today.
Hereâs to Jin. Who has shown us that hardwork is everything. He started at Bighit as an actor, and he has practiced every single day to become the amazing performer that he is today. I think of how he called his vocal trainer at 4am to show her that he has improved and I get so proud. Hereâs to the oldest member of the group. Who constantly showers his members and his fans with love. Who was the one that cooked for the members, borrowing food and tools from his own family when BTS could not afford to, who made sure that every member became comfortable in Seoul when they first arrived at BigHit. Who is always there to make us laugh with his silly gags and jokes, who is always there to make us feel loved. You worked hard to improve, you worked hard to be where you are right now. You deserve this.
Hereâs to Suga. Who learned what it meant to be an adult at such a young age. Who used to perform for audiences of two and not have enough money to even buy ramen. Who used to listen to people constsntly tell him that he would ruin his family. Who came up to Bighit as a trainee and still worked hard, studying and working part time, even though he was fighting with suicidal thoughts, depression, self-hatred, a broken shoulder and more. Who spends countless of sleepless nights working on music and lyrics, even on the nights that they are on vacation or when they just come back from a performance. Who truly showed us that though the start may be humble, the end will be properperous. Thank you for teaching us what it means to live with passion, thank you for always working hard even if you donât need to. You may not believe it, but this award is real and you deserve it. Youâve achieved all of your goals now!! Youâve worked hard to be where you are. Thank you for showing us that hardwork will never betray us.
Hereâs to J-Hope. Who was a street dancer and came into bighit planning to become a vocalist and dancer. Who, when everyone doubted his skills, practiced even harder to become the well-rounded artist that he is now. Who taught himself how to rap and how to write lyrics despite having little experience in that area and is now one of the main creators behind btsâs music. Who practices every night, working on his mixtape and working on his dance skills, because he loves to do so. Who shows us what it means to live with hope and who never fails to show us happiness even in the most difficult of times. I hope you know that we are aware of how thoughtful you are, I hope you know that our love for you is eternal, and I hope you know that you too are more than deserving for this reward.
Hereâs to Jimin. Who was a diligent student that studied dance so passionately. Who spends nearly every night in the practice room because he thinks âwho am I to be resting right now?â I think of how you cried when people doubted your skills and I hope you know that those people are completely wrong. Your voice is something that touches our hearts and moves us and your skill in dance never fails to amaze us. You belong on stage. Hereâs to Jimin. Who also showers his members with such adoration and affection, who is always there to comfort them in the darkest of times. Thank you for showing us what it means to be a good friend and brother. Thank you for showing us what it means to be kind. I hope you know that we love you just the way you are and that itâs okay to rest and to make mistakes. Please donât ever doubt yourself.
Hereâs to Taehyung. Who had to get the help of the bighit staff to convince his family to let him begin training. Who wanted to be a farmer so that he could help his grandmother in Daegu. Who has been so strong throughout this difficult year. Who constantly shows us new sides to his personality. Who constantly works hard in all that he does. Thank you for never failing to put a smile on our faces even when you were going through such a low point and thank you for teaching us what it means to be a filial child. Thank you for loving bangtan just as much as we do and thank you for always being so kind and bright. Your stage presence and skill never fails to amaze me as well. We will remember your grandmother and we will always thank her for her blessings. You are more than deserving of this award.
Hereâs to Jungkook. Who started training at such a young age, who was so shy and insecure about himself. Who left his family in Busan to come up to Seoul when he was just 14 years old. Who cries when he thinks of the hardships that his members are going through. Thank you for trusting your brothers and your future, you deserve all the love in this world. I hope you learn that it is okay to not be strong all the time. Thank you for showing us your growth and your endurance and passion.
Lastly, hereâs to BTS. This whole entire post of mine is incredibly cheesy but they really do mean a lot to me. Not only do they brighten every day with their humor and antics but they each have taught me so many things and they constantly inspire me in all that they do. They have taught me to dream, to be diligent, to be loving, and to trust my future. More importantly, they have taught me what it means to be young. So hereâs to BTS and their first daesang. You deserve it more than anybody in this world and you each are deserving of all the love in this universe. Thank you for showing us that we never are alone and thank you for understanding us and showing us what it means to achieve your dreams and to live with passion. We hear your voice.
Hereâs to the first of many more :)
Dialogue
I've had a few students asking me about how to write good dialogue. Here are a few tips I usually give out when asked about this:
1. Be observant (read: be nosy)
Listen to people around you. You'd be surprised at how much you can learn about speech patterns, idioms, etc. from just opening your ears. Whether it's the person talking on their phone while you both wait in line at Starbucks, two old friends bumping into each other at the grocery store, or the parent interacting with their kids in the waiting room at the dentist's office. Write down phrases that stick out to you. Pay attention to the way their language and tone change when addressing different people. Notice where they put their verbal pauses. These observations are the building blocks to building great characters.
2. Think of language phonetically
A common mistake with dialogue is to always represent a word the way it is meant to be written, even when it is spoken. The problem with that approach is that we often don't say certain words the same way we write them. We rush our speech, drop syllables, and create nightmarish contractions when speaking to other people. We even say the same phrases differently depending on the message we are trying to convey. "What are you doing?" is going to land differently than "What're you doing?" or "What'cha doin'?" We tend to use the first--complete with perfect enunciation--when we are being accusatory. The second is more neutral, while the third is overly casual and somewhat playful.
Situational dialogue changes are also important. A character won't talk with perfect English while they're drunk, even if they do so while sober. It might be close, but they'll probably at least slur a word here and there.
This is not to say that you need to write out every single phonetic variation, but it is useful to understand speech patterns so you can use them effectively when you do want to emphasize them.
3. Don't make all your characters sound the same
The cashier at the grocery store won't speak the same way as the tenured professor. The princess living in 1745 isn't going to sound like a valley girl from 2004. Even two characters with similar academic/economic/whatever backgrounds will have some variations in speech patterns. A shy personality isn't going to burst out with a five-minute monologue to their boss about why they want a raise, but a confident and exuberant personality might.
4. Don't overdo the exposition
Dialogue is a good tool for exposition but only if used realistically. Don't explain things you want your audience to know by having Character A tell Character B something they already know. For example, A and B are married and have a 15-year-old daughter named Izzy. Their daughter's school calls A's phone to tell them Izzy has been suspended, and A needs to explain this to B after they hang up.
A isn't going to say "B, that was the school calling to say Izzy--our 15-year-old daughter--was suspended for fighting." Obviously B already knows Izzy is their daughter, so it would be weird for A to point it out to them. Use less direct means to show the reader what the scene is about.
5. Read it out loud
This works for any type of writing, but it is particularly effective for dialogue: read it out loud. If something is awkward or clunky when you say it aloud, it will come across that way to your readers as well.
insightful notes about body insecurity from a reader :) another perspective is always nice to have
I just want to thank you for replying to messages about body insecurity and topics like that in such a nuanced and thoughtful manner.
I read them a lot of times to remind myself, and sometimes it's easier to engrave in my mind if the words are from someone else (I feel so tired of reminding myself). I remember an instance where I got sucked into comparing my bodies with models and idols, and it just leaves me feeling bad. My parents always compared me to my sister (she was 7 years older) and how different our bodies looked even when I was barely going through puberty at that age. I've always been told how pretty the hourglass figure is, and that's what my sister had, and I've always wanted to have that as well but I just... Don't. I've had times where I'm underweight and normal, and my body goes through a rapid back and forth, and I just feel so done with it. I don't care if I have flat ass, or little boobs, or if my waist hip ratio isn't good enough. When has my body became something to be measured and calculated only for it to end to be wrong just cause it doesn't fit the mold?
No one's beauty and confidence takes away my own, and if beautiful doesn't work, bodies can be just left to being bodies. Sometimes, it's okay to not feel super great and it's wonderful to feel confident but we can't always maintain that. The best thing, fo me at least, is too keep in a mindset that nothing takes away my responsibility to properly care for my body and that I owe it to myself to not hate it. This entity that I move and live in isn't meant to be used by companies to turn me against it, much more to make me think I'm any less worth. I love it when people are confident and much more when they're working towards that. I feel so much better when I reread some stuff here, and even though I'm still awed by how you've described you look (maybe envious) I'm happy that my body is strong enough. And in a pandemic! Plus, I've put it way more effort to get fit so I'll be stronger and it's quite fulfilling. It took a while but I'm glad I arrived.
Thank you.
I enjoyed reading this a lot. I'm glad you've come to a more balanced mindset of how you look at your body and recognize that it is something that needs to be maintained on a consistent basis rather than an "end goal" or "finish line". Maintaining it is hard. It's unrealistic to think that you can always be a positive, confident person, but it is important to know that the difficult times are not permanent.
You've worked hard. :)
I wouldn't say I'm strong... XD I should probably definitely work out (in a non-sexual manner). I do recognize that because I have a certain body type, I go through different things than people who have body types that are different to my own. But personally, to me, bodies are bodies. There is so much variation that it seems strange to compare. Not only that, but nature is complex and unpredictable in many ways. Gene expression is different for everyone because so many factors are involved. No, what I look for in people is who they are, who they have chosen to become, and who they want to be. Diversity should be appreciated. Why should everyone be the same? That would be very boring.
There was a time where I very much disliked by body. I looked very different due to the circumstances I was in and my mental state. I was in a state of constant emotional pain, and it showed. Even when I was a more healthy body weight, I wouldn't talk about my body in a positive light. I wasn't used to it. I had to learn that it was okay to like my body, to celebrate it, to praise it. I know I am not to everyone's taste. I like the way I look. I like saying I do. And I think everyone should be able to say that they do. It would be great if it could happen quickly and easily, but I know it is not so simple. I hope everyone who struggles with this can give themselves some grace.

How to get over writer's block
So youâre sitting here on Tumblr with a blank document in the background, hoping that this app will give you the inspiration you need to start writing. Headâs up: it probably wonât, but it did give you this post!
Whether youâve started your story and are stuck on a chapter, or havenât got a single idea, these tips might help you!
1 - Youâve got ideas, youâve got a plot, and maybe you have a couple of scenes alreadyâyet you've come to a dead-end.
As writers, we have the awareness at all times that other people will read our work, and for manyâparticularly new writersâthis can cause a lot of intimidation.
If youâre struggling with what words to write, how to phrase your thoughts, and if youâre constantly erasing what youâve written, this is probably your problem.
How to get over it: this is the hardest block to overcome because itâs completely internal. We hear it from famous authors all of the time: "The secret to overcome writerâs block is just to write"âthis is where that applies. You have the material you need to write your scene, so really, the only thing blocking you is you.
Remember, this is a first draftâno one but you will see it. These sentences you keep erasing are better than nothing and as a writer, you have the skill to fix them. As uncomfortable and unhelpful-sounding as it is, you just need to get the words out. Write absolute nonsense if you must, you can fix it after, because writing nonsense sparks better ideas.
Another issue here is encountering a scene that youâre struggling to write.
I'll be honest, giving up is the best option.
Forget about writing the scene the way youâve been trying to write it, and k*ll that one sentence youâve been trying to fit in somewhereâitâs holding you back. Instead, try writing your scene differently.
Change the POV, change the time of day, the weather; change the tone; change the charactersâ moods. Filter what the message of the scene is, and find a different way to convey it.
If youâre stubborn and really want to use the scene that youâve been constantly back-tracking on (weâve all been there), try these 3 different ways to start it: narration, dialogue, description.
2 - Youâve got ideas, youâve got a plot, and youâve not started.
This problem goes hand in hand with the previous one, only youâre stuck on the first scene of the first chapter. How should you start your story?
There are many ways to write a book and not everything works for everyone, but this tip will give you the foundation you need to start.
Find your focus.
Sort through all of the information you want to give the reader at the beginning of the story, and pick the element thatâll make them want to read to chapter two. Which part of your story is the most unique and special? Do the characters stand out, is there an event happening? Is the place strange?
Choose one focus and push that forward in the first chapter.
If the focus is a character, put them in a situation where their personality will shine the most; if the focus is an event, use each character, object or element to emerge the reader in it. If you have an interesting location, work that into chapter one.
There are many writing techniques you can use to start a first chapter, one of which is choosing a focus, so Iâll make a post on it soon that highlights what these techniques are and how to use them correctly!
3 - Youâve got an empty head and no ideas what-so-ever.
Ah yes, the nagging urge to write but no inspiration. Youâve listened to music, youâve look at prompts, and your head is still as empty as a balloon.
To write, you need material to work with. Donât try to come up with a whole story all at one, you most likely wonât get anywhere. Start small!
Create a character.
What is your favourite time period? Whatâs your favourite age for a character? What traits do you want to give them? Give them unique and special features that will make them more real to you. Give them scarsâwhere did they come from? Give them a wild fashion sense. Give them a hatred for chipmunks. Create a character that you know enough about to have a world build itself around them.
Start with the generic features of that character like gender, age, race; and hone in on the smaller details like their preferred way to sit.
Choose a genre.
This seems so obvious but itâs something many of us donât actually think about. What kind of story do you want to write? What could you create that youâve not seen anywhere else? Do you like Ghosts? Kissing? Lesbians? Write a a story with all three! Why not put the lesbians in an Edwardian house owned by a rich banker from Dorset? We write because we enjoy it. Remember that. Take what you love and turn it into a story.
I hope these tips helped you!
