You’re not a bother at all! Unfortunately I don’t write much any more. Maybe some day, but not right now. I’m sorry. 🥺

Always Yours B. Barnes

If anyone was ever-the-romantic, it was James Buchanan Barnes. He’d never had issues finding gifts for any holiday or even your birthday, but this valentine’s day had him stumped for once.

Every aisle of every store within a five mile radius just didn’t have the perfect gift, and he was at his wit’s end trying to find something that he would consider at least acceptable by his high standards.

“I dunno, Sam”. Bucky confided in one of his best friends, Sam Wilson. “I’ve searched every store in town and I just can’t find the perfect gift. Everything is either bland and boring or entirely too flashy.” He sunk down onto Sam’s couch, raking his hands through his short hair.

“Have you thought of just making something for them?” Sam offered, “something simple you know, like a homemade gift basket with all their favorite things?”

That was it. The perfect idea.

Always Yours B. Barnes

“Sam…you’re a genius.” Bucky snapped his fingers, leaning up with his elbows rested on his knees.

“Wait— can you say that again?” Sam chuckled, retrieving his phone from his jeans pocket, “I need it on video for proof that it was said.”

Bucky shook his head, rising from his seat, “get it out of my face Sam, or I’ll break it.” He covered the phone with his metal hand, a snarky smile on his face as Sam quickly put his phone back in his pocket.

“Alright, I’m gonna go out and get a few things and make the best damn gift basket y/n’s ever seen.” Bucky grabbed his wallet and keys from the coffee table before heading towards the door.

“Go get 'em, Buck.” Sam smiled, waving him off.

“Don’t call me that.” Bucky shook his head as he opened the door, quickly making his way out to the driveway where his car was.

It wasn’t long before Bucky had accumulated a shopping basket full of all your favorite candies and sweets, gift cards to your favorite stores, a teddy bear with a plush heart, and a goofy card with a cartoon donut saying "I donut know what I’d do without you!" to top it all off.

As he was standing in the check-out line, his phone pinged, indicating that he had received a text. He fished around in his pocket, finding his phone to see the text was from you, making sure Sam hadn’t dragged him into another mission. He quickly responded to let you know that he was still free and that you wouldn’t have to spend valentine’s day without him.

As soon as he entered your shared apartment, he set all of the shopping bags down near the couch, setting the white wicker basket on the coffee table before emptying the bags.

“I’m beginning to think this was a terrible idea.” Bucky spoke into his phone, “I can’t arrange this in a way that looks halfway decent.”

“I’m sure you’re just over-reacting.” Sam’s voice came from the other end of the line, “quit holding yourself to such high standards because they’re gonna love the gift either way and you know it.”

“I hope you’re right.” Bucky stuffed the teddy bear into the basket, arranging the bags of candy, sweets, and gift cards around it in a way that he was finally content with.

“I know I’m right, I’m always right.” Sam smirked.

“Shut it, Wilson.” Bucky stifled a chuckle, “listen y/n’s gonna be home any minute so I’ve gotta get this set up for them to see. We’ll talk more later.”

“Catch you later, Buck.” Sam chuckled to himself before hanging up.

Bucky shook his head as the line beeped, “god I hope this gift is a winner.” He carefully turned the basket, so you could see it as soon as you walked in the front door. He quickly signed the card, propping it up to look as if the teddy bear was holding it. On a whim, Bucky decided to make dinner for the both of you; just a quick, simple chicken alfredo dinner with garlic bread.

Your keys jangled in the door knob, turning the lock to allow you access to your apartment.

“Buck?” You called from the front door, “I’m home!” You quickly closed the door behind you, dropping your work bags to the floor as soon as you saw the gift basket that sat on the coffee table.

“In the kitchen!” Bucky called back, “don’t come in here, it’s a surprise!” He sounded panicked, but you ignored his tone and assumed he was busy.

“James Buchanan Barnes…” you murmured to yourself as you looked over the gift basket, “you’ve really outdone yourself, haven’t you?“ you plucked the card from the teddy bear’s arms, opening the envelope to reveal a pink card with a silly little cartoon donut, then your eyes landed on Bucky’s scratchy manuscript:

I couldn’t think of anything else, so I put this together to show you how much I love you. You mean everything to me.

—always yours, Bucky

You smiled to yourself at the card and the gift basket, noticing it had all of your favorites in it. Bucky may come off as stoic and intimidating to everyone else, but they’d never get to see this side of him and that’s what you loved about your relationship.

“y/n?” Bucky called from the kitchen, “can you come here for a second?”

You sighed, a whimsy smile on your face as you set the card down on the table, “James…what did you—” you stopped in your tracks at the doorway of the kitchen, taking in the view of perfectly cooked chicken alfredo and the aroma of garlic bread.

“Surprise.” Bucky wore a goofy smile, proud of his handy work in the kitchen.

“You had me thinking you caught something on fire in here.” You smiled, a giggle escaping your lips.

“Nope, no fires. Just your loving boyfriend and the fantastic meal he prepared for you.” Bucky pulled you into a hug, placing a kiss on the top of your head, “happy valentine’s day, y/n.”

“Happy valentine’s day, Buckaroo.” You smiled goofily against his chest before realizing you still had to give him his gift. “Wait here.” You quickly pulled away, running to your bedroom to find his gift.

“y/n—” Bucky tried to call after you, chuckling at his own futile attempt as you were already in the bedroom, sifting through your bedside drawer.

Within moments, you returned with a small black box wrapped with a red bow and a little card attached to it.

“It’s your gift.” You held it out to Bucky. “I’m sorry it’s not much…I was a little stumped on what to get for you and then I found this and I just knew it was perfect. A bit expensive but…y’know what? Just open it.” You shyly smiled, embarrassed by how much you’d spent on it.

Bucky felt a little better knowing that he wasn’t the only one struggling to find the perfect gift, but he didn’t expect you to go out of your way to find anything special for him.

“It doesn’t matter what the price of the gift was, doll.” Bucky smiled, taking the box from you and carefully untying the bow, “what matters is that it’s from you.” He opened the box, revealing a gold compass with both of your initials engraved on the top.

“y/n, you didn’t have to do this.” Bucky’s eyes widened as he removed the compass from the box, seeing that it had your anniversary date engraved on the bottom of it.

“I wanted to.” You shrugged, “I figured something romantic and practical would be the best thing. If you get lost or something, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to have it on you and it can lead you back home.” You smiled as he took your hand, bringing it up to his lips to place a quick kiss to the back of it.

“This is the best gift I’ve ever gotten.” Bucky’s lips curved into a smile against the back of your hand, “and I mean that with my whole heart.”

“I’m glad you love it.” You smiled, biting your lower lip, “and that gift basket, you wanna talk about that?”

Bucky snorted, trying to hold back a chuckle, “if you don’t like it, it was Sam’s idea. But if you do like it, then it was my idea.”

“Well you’re in luck, because I love it.” Your hands cupped his face, pulling him in for a kiss.

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re saying that just to spare my feelings.” Bucky smirked, “but I know that you’d never lie to me about that.”

“The gifts cards were a nice touch.” You admitted, smiling. “Maybe I won’t spend so much on stuff I don’t need now.”

“Highly doubtful.” He chuckled, a hand resting on your hip.

“Let’s not judge each other’s spending habits too much, yeah?” You laughed, a hand coming up to rest behind his neck, causing him to smile.

“Maybe I don’t need the compass to lead me home when I’m lost…maybe I just need it to lead me to you.” Bucky’s eyes scanned over your features before your lips met in a tender kiss.

Maybe all that time spent searching for the perfect gift wasn’t so bad after all.
