Fun fact! I actually found a few common stinkhorns- a terrible smelling mushroom- while on a mushroom hunt this weekend!

I also found a stinkhorn egg, which I brought home and was able to watch as it grew! (The eggs are edible, but the mushrooms themselves are not. I would personally never try a stinkhorn egg- the smell isn’t exactly enticing.) It took only about five hours for the full-sized mushroom to emerge from the egg, so I was almost watching it get bigger in real time!!! They have incredible strength, these mushrooms are known for pushing up through concrete to grow. It’s estimated that three of them together are capable of lifting 400kg of weight!

It was incredible to see the birth of a mushroom, and awful to smell. The things I do for science…
