The Forest Will Meet The Sea
TS HAS MAJOR TWS U HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!! under the cut :3
CW: hella whump, ed, somewhat suicide ig??
The forest will meet the sea as Rain is nestled up to Mountain in a post-scene haze, naught but whispers and purrs breaking the silence and the hum of the mechanics of the Ministry. Mountain promises he will never leave Rain as long as he lives, and Rain returns the promise. Their warmth and satisfaction continues as they continue to nuzzle into each other. A low trill leaves Rain as they shift together to lay on their side, and they tangle legs, arms, and tails comfortably and fall asleep to the warmth and cool respectively of the other. Mountain leans up and kisses the mating mark on Rain’s scent gland, causing Rain to lean their head and hum happily. No words are spoken as they settle for sleep, held close to each other.
The forest will meet the sea as Rain wakes up with what can only be described as a scream, shivering with the ice cold terror after a nightmare; their new mate being torn away from them, their bond being severed, the pain and dying from their broken heart. Mountain holds their arms, grounding, peppering their face with kisses as they wail and wrap their arms tightly around him as if they’ll be torn apart if they let go. Mountain murmurs praises, rubbing their back, and holding onto them, pressing kisses to their head and twining their tails together. “I’m here, we’re safe, no one will hurt us.” Rain is slowly lulled to sleep and Mountain is left wondering what scared his mate this much and nearly shaking with rage and want to go into their brain and tear apart what hurts them. He is hesitant to go back to bed, a primal need to protect his mate flowing through all of his being.
The forest will meet the sea as they lay together under the stars, watching as meteors rush by and constellations burn nearly as bright as their love for each other. Rain yawns and cuddles into Mountain, closing their eyes as they are exhausted into rest. Mountain wraps his arms around them and holds them as they rest under the beloved stars on that peaceful night.
The forest will meet the sea when they receive the news Mountain is being sent back to the Pits. They do not leave each other’s side, not even when Mountain needs to cook for the pack. Rain stays glued to his side. They are always pressed together, skin to skin, crying desperately and trying to get as much of each other as they can before they are savagely torn apart, as Dewdrop and Aether were. Mountain blesses Rain with his recipe book, so they will always have a part of him. Rain vows to dedicate a day to his cooking only and that no one will ever forget him as long as they are Topside.
The forest will meet the sea when Mountain has to be torn away from Rain. They are on their knees crying like they never have before, trying, by any miracle, praying to any higher power listening, that they will allow him to stay. But they don’t. With a final, dreaded kiss, Mountain is whisked to the pentagram and sent back, tears falling down his face as he mutters a final, “I love you.” to his mate. Rain is inconsolable, snapping at everyone who tries to comfort them, nearly killing Mountain’s replacement, someone that will never be him no matter how hard they try, and never being seen out of their room unless it’s to cook Mountain’s recipes; even then, they are almost violent, zone out often, are silent, and hardly eat the food. The pack grows worried, they want to help but there is no way to help.
The forest may meet the sea as Rain continues their terrifying pattern for the rest of their time Topside; starving for weeks at a time, not bathing until their skin is cracking and rough, their skin growing paler with a lack of vitamins. They spend most of their day in their room, trying to sleep, crying into Mountain’s clothing until they fell asleep with the worst headache ever. If not there, they are in the Clergy’s offices trying to beg them to send them back to the Pits. They are extremely reclusive on tour, and attempt to retain their energy that they once had, but they are unable. Fans notice. They notice Rain’s mood change along with Mountain’s absence, and people quickly catch on.
The forest may meet the sea as Rain finally receives the news that they are being sent back, the Clergy has become fed up with their lethargy and sends them back. Rain falls to their knees and cries, frantically thanking them for finally letting them go home, and to Mountain. They frantically search for weeks, finally finding Mountain, and they are ecstatic. However, Mountain has moved on. He holds two young earth ghoul kits, with another climbing up his leg. They meet eyes, Mountain’s widens and Rain’s narrow and fill with tears. Rain watches with feet nailed to the ground as Mountain gives his kits to his mate, before moving to Rain. Rain sobs and tries to move to hug Mountain, hopeful, to hold him close just as he did to them so many years ago, but he moves back, simply staring at them. It’s clear their love ended when Mountain returned to the Pit. Rain falls to their knees, digging their claws into the ground. They sob hysterically, shaking their head. “I fucking begged, for YEARS, for them to send me back for you, FOR THIS? I’ve given you EVERYTHING, and THIS is what I get? You’re fucked up Mountain, I haven’t done anything but give you every bit of love I had! I hurt everyone, including myself, fucking rejecting them because I thought that, one day, I would have you again. But I’m just so fucking stupid huh?” Mountain is speechless, and just walks away and ushers his family into shelter. Rain scoffs and goes to find shelter of their own.
The forest may meet the sea as Rain finds someone new, another, much older and larger water ghoul named Riptide. Rain and Riptide love as Rain and Mountain did. Rain is happier now, however still attempts to find Mountain and brag they have someone new, that he’s as replaceable as they are. However, it doesn’t have the desired effect. Mountain ends up getting into a fight with Riptide, causing him to leave Rain as they begged him to stay. Rain attempts to continue, to find someone new, but they can’t.
The forest will not meet the sea as Rain allows themself to wither away within their shelter, causing their own death. They don’t have anything left now. As their final consciousness fades away, Rain remembers their soft mornings with Mountain, they remember their soft nights with Mountain, and they cry as they mistake the warm blanket of death for Mountain’s arms.
The forest will meet the sea in many universes, but this will not be the one that they'll meet again.
