normalize my 12th grade English teacher, who admitted that his favorite TV show was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and when a male student suggested that it was because Buffy/Sarah Michelle Gellar was hot, wrinkled his face like he’d bitten into something rotten and dead, and said, “At my age (he was 53), there is nothing less sexy than a teenager. You’re all disgusting messes.” It was 1999, I was 17, and I’d grown up in conservative Christian schools and churches. In my life I’d heard heard dozens of sermons from male preachers and teachers and even some older students, whining about how hard it was to be a dude and not commit the sin of thinking sexual thoughts, and how they needed women to wear long skirts and cover their bodies to objectify them

and my bitter, misanthropic, atheist Brit Lit teacher, who hated my class because he was obsessed with teaching Huckleberry Finn but got stuck with Shakespeare and Jane Austen, was the first, and this day the last man I have ever heard articulate a rebuttal from the depths of his soul to the idea that it was normal for teenage girls to be desirable to middle aged men

literally sitting here hysterically laughing and close to tears because the UK government missed over 16,000 covid 19 cases in the past week and therefore failed to trace them or publicize correct infection statistics BECAUSE THEY WERE USING EXCEL TO KEEP TRACK OF THEM AND THE SPREADSHEET RAN OUT OF COLUMNS

every week there's another news item that immediately tops the list of real life events that sound like an overwrought politics SNL sketch and every week all i can do is laugh because otherwise i'd be resorting to arson

this year is a cosmic joke and i am absolutely terrified of the punchline

Livestock drama

“Let’s put pool noodles on the goat’s horns!” says a teenager.

“Why would you,   ” I begin, but they have already stampeded out of the house. I shrug.

Livestock Drama

It turns out that when someone puts pool noodles on a goat’s horns, the goat doesn’t really care. They’re very light, after all, and she can’t see them. You know who cares? Who cares a LOT?

the HORSE. Hero took one look at Nutmeg wearing pool noodles and ran away. You know who doesn’t want to be left alone, ever? Nutmeg. Who went trotting after Hero because he was leaving her.

Livestock Drama

Hero, seeing that the eldritch abomination was after him, picked up speed. Nutmeg went into a full run. My kids started chasing Nutmeg to get the pool noodles off her, but could not catch her, because she’s surprisingly fast. The dogs were bringing up the rear, just happy to be going for a pleasant run. Hero was in a panic, leading a parade that he did not want.

This all resolved. One noodle feel off; the kids eventually cornered Nutmeg and removed the other one. Just - a day at a farm, I guess.

I very proudly entered the forestry school as an 18-year-old and telling them that the reason that I wanted to study botany was because I wanted to know why asters and goldenrod looked so beautiful together. These are these amazing displays of this bright, chrome yellow and deep purple of New England aster, and they look stunning together. And the two plants so often intermingle rather than living apart from one another, and I wanted to know why that was. I thought that surely in the order and the harmony of the universe, there would be an explanation for why they looked so beautiful together. And I was told that that was not science, that if I was interested in beauty, I should go to art school. Which was really demoralizing as a freshman, but I came to understand that question wasn’t going to be answered by science, that science, as a way of knowing, explicitly sets aside our emotions, our aesthetic reactions to things. We have to analyze them as if they were just pure material, and not matter and spirit together. And, yes, as it turns out, there’s a very good biophysical explanation for why those plants grow together, so it’s a matter of aesthetics and it’s a matter of ecology. Those complimentary colors of purple and gold together, being opposites on the color wheel, they’re so vivid, they actually attract far more pollinators than if those two grew apart from one another. So each of those plants benefits by combining its beauty with the beauty of the other. And that’s a question that science can address, certainly, as well as artists. And I just think that “Why is the world so beautiful?” is a question that we all ought to be embracing.

people talk a lot about diversity in university and among healthcare professionals but sometimes i stop to think that like

without thinking too hard about it my med school class had at least three lesbians, some good five or six bisexual girls, at least five gay dudes that I can think of right away but probably more like ten, one distinctly autistic guy but probably more like three, one trans dude, at least one jew, several kids who were really poor and college gave them money for books and financial support, and sometimes even housing if they came from elsewhere

and that's just my class like, we had exchange students from south america, central america and africa, we had indigenous students, students with various disabilities, we had so many queers that we got to run gay themed parties and have like LGBT groups, we have a set amount of university spots saved for black/brown students (and though they used to be often misused, they're now more strictly enforced), and a set amount of spots for students with proven disabilities

food was subsided and cheap for everyone, but for the students who really couldn't afford it, they actually got to eat for free three times a day. I paid the highest student fee available for lunch and it was still less than $2 USD, and lunch was one choice of meat, one condiment, one fruit or dessert, and all you can eat rice, beans, salad, flour and juice

i had free appointments with a psychologist and a psychiatrist dedicated for med students for years

and through all of that, through all of med school, what I paid for tuition was

zero

anyway brazilian federal unis are amazing

Note: This isn’t an insult/sassy come back to people to asking valid questions/statements (well maybe a bit sassy lol), none of it’s meant to offend people that are calmly trying to educate themselves to lgbtq+. Questions are always welcome!

i post a lot of content about ace issues, so i thought i’d share sara sunflower’s video since it’s very informative and i think you guys would like it! i find that a lot of it is based on actual studies and research, rather than just opinion, which is really helpful since a lot of the discourse around this topic is mostly people’s opinions. anyway, enjoy? hopefully you can learn a thing or two from it?

“It is very tempting to take the side of the perpetrator. All the perpetrator asks is that the bystander do nothing. He appeals to the universal desire to see, hear, and speak no evil. The victim, on the contrary, asks the bystander to share the burden of the pain. The victim demands action, engagement, and remembering.

(…) In order to escape accountability for his crimes the perpetrator does everything in his power to promote forgetting. Secrecy and silence are the perpetrator’s first line of defense. If secrecy fails, the perpetrator attacks the credibility of his victim. If he cannot silence her absolutely, he tries to make sure that no one listens. To this end, he marshals an impressive array of arguments, from the most blatant denial to the most sophisticated and elegant rationalization. After every atrocity one can expect to hear the same predictable apologies: it never happened; the victim lies; the victim exaggerates; the victim brought it upon herself; and in any case it is time to forget the past and move on. The more powerful the perpetrator, the greater is his prerogative to name and define reality, and the more completely his arguments prevail.” - Judith Lewis Herman, Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence - From Domestic Abuse to Political Terror
