Elia looked at the young Lannister girl, the girl who could have been her sister in another life. Had the girl’s mother lived... the Lady Joanna would have been more receptive to Princess Loreza’s proposals. They would have been sisters, be it her marrying Jaime or Cersei marrying Oberyn. Now... they never would be, not with how Tywin was likely to take the betrothal of Elia to Rhaegar as a slight. It had been why he turned down the offer to marry Cersei to Oberyn after all, he’d said that Cersei was meant for Rhaegar. Loreza had chosen to bide her time, to wait until this moment to convince Aerys to engage Rhaegar to her daughter, not that Aerys had taken much convincing. Cersei was in King’s Landing with her father, who remained at court year round save occasional trips to Casterly Rock. She wondered if Tywin had ever told the girl that she was meant to marry Rhaegar... and if she resented Elia for it. “My Lady.” she greeted politely.

Arya wove through the halls with a purpose, her heart tight in her chest and tears threatening to fall from her eyes. Jeyne and Sansa’s taunts still fresh in her mind, the girl looked for somewhere, anywhere she could hide herself. She dare not let them see her cry, or any of their other friends. There was, however, one person in the castle whom she could go to see, another who was left behind while the boys were allowed to join Lord Stark on a hunt.

Ever since Brienne had come to Winterfell, Arya had taken to her, even admired and looked up to her. It was why she went to her now, trusting only Brienne to see her shed tears. Brienne wouldn’t make fun of her, wouldn’t call her those vile names, for Brienne understood how much someone’s words could hurt worse than any cut. Words were like invisible daggers to the heart, unseen bleeding causing more anguish than a girl could admit.
