Coal Dark Chapter 1

Summary

Canon-Divergent in that none of the main characters were reaped for the Games. EVERLARK.

The annual Coal Dark festival is the one evening a year District Twelve actually celebrates life. It is a rite of passage, and often a night of courting, for those that have recently aged out of the reaping process. Tonight’s Coal Dark is bittersweet for Katniss Everdeen, because while it is the first Coal Dark her younger sister Primrose is no longer eligible for the Hunger Games, it also means she’s grown into a woman. When an unwanted dance partner informs Katniss that Peeta Mellark, the boy she’s been quietly in love with for years, plans to start his own future once the lights go out at the end of the night, and that Peeta’s target is Primrose, Katniss is left to wonder if a proposal from a man she doesn’t love is better than having no hope of a future at all. Chapter 1

Tonight is Coal Dark, the fall celebration where the coal-coated, sweating humanity that is District Twelve comes out to socialize, drink, and dance to foot-tapping fiddling, jigs, reels, ballads, and laments. It’s when we take one night to pretend we’re not perpetually teetering on the brink of starvation.

It might even just be, aside from Reaping Day, the only day of the year where District Twelve actually feels like a community, like a family, instead of a conglomeration of individuals scrounging for daily bread.

The sun is only just beginning to set and the crowd won’t show up until the stars come out, but Prim and I are walking over early. She wants to help her friends who are supposed to set up the refreshments. Really, I’m sure she wants to gossip with them about which boys they each hope to dance with tonight.

What are your favorite Hunger Games headcanons? *blows kisses* I love you.

Love you too, anon. I have to say most of my headcanons are Everlark related, so I hope you don’t mind :) 

Katniss had a repressed crush on Peeta long before the Reaping. I know this is, for the most part, a pretty universally agreed upon line of thought among Everlark shippers, but since it is still contested by some and never confirmed beyond critically reading between the lines of what Katniss is saying, I consider it a headcanon. It’s one thing to take notice of a boy who helped you, but I feel like it’s another thing entirely for her to have observed some of the things she did before she even properly spoke to him. I think the one that gets me the most is knowing how strong he is because she saw him carrying flour at the market. That’s not a quick, “Oh. I see him in the market getting flour sometimes.” It’s, “I see him getting flour and stared at him long enough to notice how heavy that bag is and how easily he carries it.” Big, big difference. 

I saw this one pop up a few times, but it bears repeating: Katniss and Peeta had more than two children. In my mind, Katniss was pregnant again in the epilogue. No evidence to support that thought, so that’s where the real headcanon comes into play lol. 

Peeta never actually “rebuilt” the bakery. He started brand new from the ground up and made it his own place where he could create memories with his family instead of reviving his own (more often than not) less than happy childhood memories. To keep his family’s memory alive though, he did keep the Mellark name attached to the new place. 

I’ve always pictured both Toastbabies with curly hair, even if Katniss only mentioned the boy’s curls. I also always picture the girl to have the fairer skin of the two kids. 

Katniss was never a terrible cook and eventually found she enjoyed doing it. But she was hopeless when it came to baking. Too impatient to measure ingredients or make sure they were the correct temperatures for what she was attempting to make and wouldn’t sift anything. Baking was too precise and she ignored Peeta’s instructions and advice. She liked the freedom of cooking better. Putting her own spin on things didn’t change the entire end result of what she was making like it did with baking. Cooking was much more Katniss’ style. 

Haymitch paced the first floor of Katniss and Peeta’s home for many agonizing hours when Katniss was in labor with both kids. He pretended the waiting was a hassle and he’d rather be doing anything else. But his refusal to leave to rest or even accept food told Peeta otherwise. 

The sex was powerful and plentiful in the Mellark-Everdeen (Everdeen-Mellark?) household.

Ok these aren’t in any particular order, but are just some Joniss fanfics that I enjoy! Some might not be completed, but still worth reading in my opinion!

Your Skin and Bones: A joniss classic! Mostly drabbles.

There’s nowhere I’d rather be: An older story, and quite long! Definitely a fave of mine when I first got into joniss. 

You’re Mine: A sickeningly sweet and wonderfully smutty fic, that is pretty long!

Back to You: This one I can’t even properly describe how much I love it oh gosh! It’s super long, and has some really interesting twists at the end, especially with Johanna’s character.

Husking:  A short and smutty classic! A must-read!

The Fire Within : This one is very well written, and very long! A must read, for sure.

Lifeblood:  This is probably my favorite fic atm, and JMI is such a fantastic author, seriously, if you haven’t read this yet, please do so!

There’s No One Left I Love: This is one I read way back when I first started shipping Joniss, so I honestly don’t remember much, but I know I liked it!

Solace in You: Short fic in which Johanna just shows up at Katniss’ house, cute things and smut happens

Hunger Games: Sirens of the Wood : A lengthy and smutty fic. Never completed, however.

Regrets And Mistakes They Are Memories Made: A lengthy emotional roller coaster

Kindling: Ok this one is honestly a bit ridiculous, but sex in the arena is just kinda fun to read

All the Little Things: This one focuses on specific details in their established relationship and is super fluffy

She Doesn’t Say I Love You: This one just gives me so many feelings, just read it, you won’t be disappointed!

This Year’s Girl: Joniss switching bodies! What more could you want?

My Soul to Keep: Never completed, but I really wish it were. Pregnant Johanna shows up at Katniss’ house and they think about what to do. Worth reading just for obtaining headcanons.

Plain Sailing Weather:  A huge fave of mine. Johanna and Katniss in rehab, really great ending. 

To Kill a Mockingjay: A super awesome Harry Potter AU That desperately needs to be updated.

Conversations With Blight:  Mostly just a look into Johanna’s thoughts as she discusses with “Blight” (who is deceased as she talks to him), with some joniss in there.

They Can’t Hurt Me:  Not specifically Joniss, but I enjoy their interaction in it, and the take on Jo’s time in the capital is interesting. Lots of TWs, incomplete. 

The Whipping Post:  Johanna gets whipped and Katniss takes care of her, and it’s sad and sweet

Thanks For the Memories:  Super sad character death. Will rip your heart out.

Running Red: Cold War AU in which Katniss tracks Johanna down and falls in love. Seriously needs to be updated!

We’ve Not Yet Lost All Our Graces:  Really lengthy and well written fic! Definitely read it,

An Evergreen Forest: Takes place a while after Mockingjay, Johanna’s mellower, really cute!

After the Storm: Dealing with some PTSD things, sad and fluffy, and little bit smutty!

In the Arms of the Ocean:  Johanna shows up at Katniss’ house after many years, and they start to reconnect. Incomplete. 

Interlude: Masturbation leads to sexy times (shh I like this)

But You Love Me, Right?:  Super fluff made of sugar

Even with that mask covering half his face, Alya could see the red staining his face, creeping down onto his ivory cheeks slowly like a spreading wine stain. “No,” he said carefully, and his voice hitched at the end of the syllable. “No, she’s not. What on earth gave you that idea?” He looked nauseous. 

Amazing. Alya could scream.

Instead of screaming, she gave him a soft grin. Something reassuring to lure him into a false sense of security as she carefully stepped between him and the club’s exit. The akuma was gone, and he hadn’t even used his trump card to defeat it, so he was in no danger of a forced detransformation anytime soon. Therefore Chat (who famously adored both her and her blog) had no excuse to duck out of this impromptu interview without confirming the suspicion that he was hiding something.

“It’s not really my idea,” Alya answered belatedly. She reached over the bartop, where the employees were too busy cleaning up the mess the akuma had made of their bar to notice Alya steal a handful of orange slices. “Someone posted it on the blog about a week ago, and it spread like wildfire. Even the major news stations have begun to speculate. Surely this isn’t the first you’ve heard of it.”

“No,” he said. “It’s not. But it’s still ridiculous.” Chat looked directly into the camera lens and rose his voice to say, “For everyone wondering, and you can take this as my official statement on the matter: Ladybug is not pregnant.”

“Uh-huh. So where exactly is she then? What is she doing? It doesn’t really seem like her to just go on a months-long vacation from being a superhero. We’re all worried about her.”

“I told you,” he scowled. “I’m not at liberty to answer that. And the weekly videos she posts on your blog should be enough to placate any fears, don’t you think?”

“Videos shot from the neck up,” Alya pointed out. “Suspicious, isn’t it?”

“No,” he ground out. “No, I really don’t think it is. Y’know, Alya, one of the reasons I like you is because you’re usually above all that gossip stuff. But this is starting to feel like a tabloid interview.”

The jab rolled right off her shoulders, and she pointed one of her orange slices at him. “Tabloids aren’t concerned with the facts. I am. The fact is, no one has seen Ladybug in person for almost four months. Yes?”

Chat Noir crossed his arms, and it took him a few moments to realize that she wasn’t asking rhetorically. “Yes,” he agreed reluctantly.

“Except for you. Yes?”

“Yes,” he said, growing increasingly exasperated.

“So you can see why some people are a little angry with you, and wary of the secrecy, right?” Not that she was. But, there were some of the more avid Ladybug fans that wanted Chat Noir’s head for this.

“Yes, yes, and so what? What is the point of–”

“And you agree that Ladybug hasn’t shown herself below the neck in one of her ‘hello Paris’ videos in almost three months, yes?”

“Yes–”

“And the baby is yours, right?”

“YES, ALYA, the baby is–”

“HA!” Alya crowed so loud and spazzed out so suddenly that everyone in the bar jumped and looked at them, and she almost dropped the camera. Chat paled so quickly it looked like he’d been shot.

“O-oh shit. Shit. Oh my god, you sneaky little– Alya, please don’t air this.”

“Sorry, kitty, but this is a livestream.” She turned the camera toward her face and gave her audience a giddy laugh. “That’s right, you heard it here first folks! There’s nothing at all to worry about. Our bug is happy and healthy and fine. She’s just pregnant, that’s all!”

Fifteen minutes later and four miles away, Marinette Dupain-Cheng stared at her computer screen as the rerun of the interview finished playing, with fury turning her face from pink to red to purple. Seeing this, Tikki slowly backed away on the desktop, then flitted off all at once to take cover. A hormonal Marinette was not to be trifled with. 

The sound of the sliding glass door opening behind her sent the rage into a whirlwind. She wheeled around to find him standing there with the most frightened smile she’d ever seen. Good. “Hey, babe… Funny story…”

“You better start running,” she said.
