This weirdly specific hair trope for female asian characters is certainly strange, but here’s a post documenting the shows that rejected the idea that they must have some sort of colorful stripe. I’m not sure why it’s a thing or if it’s really racist. I only know for sure that I find it kind of eerie. 

For Kimiko’s case, it should be noted that while she does exhibit crazy/quirky/cute fashions from time to time, her natural black hair does not exhibit any dyed stripes.
