This whole episode deserves essays written about it, books written about it, both as a pivotal moment in Supernatural's evolution and as an episode of network television at its finest, but my brain stopped working because Christopher Heyerdahl.

I... I can't with this episode. Even if I get past the extreme Cas 'n' Sam whump, I still can't.

I'm not sure what I expected to see the next time we saw Cas after breaking free from Naomi's mind control, after that devastating scene with Dean in the crypt, after touching the actual Word of God and getting all glowy.

Cas looking exhausted and sickly but retaining enough good grace to chat pleasantly with the waitress while drinking endless cups of coffee, politely ordering food he doesn't need to eat, hiding in plain sight in a neverending series of cookie-cutter fast-food restaurants he chose to confuse the birdsyeye gaze of Heaven was not it.

Naomi slaughtering a restaurant full of humans to make him stop running was not it.

Cas saying "Bite me" to Naomi without messing up the delivery was not it.

Cas sticking that huge lump of rock inside his own body to conceal and protect it (then getting it ripped out again) was not it.

Cas hardcore digging an angel-killing bullet out of his gut with his fingertips while being interrogated, then manually shoving it in his brother angel's eye was not it.

Cas ending up asking Dean and Sam to help him because he was so badly injured by the end was not it.

I watched this about a month ago now and I still can't even thoughts. Nope. And don't even get me started on hermit!Metatron and his stories and the Sam hurt/comfort fever crazies, or Crowley being singlehandedly smarter than the combined forces of Heaven.

That one time Cas was using all his considerable strength and fortitude to fight the overpowering magic turning him into a homicidal zombie maniac, Sam randomly insulted his car, and Dean tried to sit on the fence about it.

Plenty of shows these days play hard with the whole found family/choose your people motif, but Supernatural's on another level with organic little character scenes like this one among the protagonists. They're chugging along with the story of the week while enriching the characters like crazy. I love it. As a viewer, as a writer, as a lover of good performances - I love it.

I can't believe Supernatural did this. I love that Supernatural did this. Family therapy for Lucifer and God with Sam and Dean Winchester as facilitators. And with Lucifer wearing their best friend. Could this get any more messed up, or any more beautiful?

All that epic story arc about the angels and their civil wars, about the absentee God and his writer issues and the mess he left behind, and they bring it down to Earth with this intimate, real, honest conversation between an estranged father and a once-favourite son.
