If Eurylochus has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Eurylochus has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Eurylochus has only one fan then that is me. If Eurylochus has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Eurylochus, then I am against the world.

cw // mild thunder saga spoilers

the fact that both Odysseus and Eurylochus use "i'm just a man" as an attempt to place the blame for their own actions on someone (or something) else...

they truly are brothers huh

GUYS I WAS JUST RANTING ABOUT THE THUNDER SAGA TO MY BROTHER

And I realized something. WHAT IF THE CREW DIDN'T KNOW THEY WERE CROSSING SCYLLA'S TERRITORY?

Because when Odysseus was talking about that with the sirens, their ears were filled with wax so they didn't hear anything. Ody was a pro lip reader but that doesn't mean the others were/maybe they didn't even pay attention.

And then Odysseus says "the lair of Scylla" at the beginning of Scylla but... WHAT IF that wasn't out loud? Maybe it wasn't?

Because Eurylochus says "tell me you did not know that would happen, say you didn't how that would end"

And I mean, if they knew they're going through Scylla's territory, be wouldn't be that surprised, right? Because everyone knows what Scylla does, right? They probably would've known if they knew. SO WHAT IF THEY SAILED THROUGH HER LAIR WITH ONLY ODYSSEUS KNOWING WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

I’m rereading the odyssey n shit and Eurylochus was Odysseus’ BROTHER IN LAW. Not only was Eurylochus a comrade, a friend, he was Odysseus’ BROTHER. How could Odysseus come home to break it to his sister that she was now a widow? Because of HIM?

Omg, I just had s thought

We all have the headcanon that odysseus takes polites headband agter his death, right? And knots it around his hand?

Now, just imagine: the scene in mutinity but after odysseus is stabbed and betrayed by his crewmates, Eurylochus stepps forward and cuts the band off odysseus arm.

He takes a step back and glares at odysseus, who lays in the sand, bleeding. And the last thing Odysseus hears befor he gets unconscious are Eurylochus words: "you don't deserve this. Not after what you have done"

Eurylochus: Captain! We've found the remains of a ship. There's a message scrawled on the deck.

Odysseus, reading it: "Sirens."

Euylochus: Some poor sailor used his final moments to leave a warning using his own blood and even his own intestines.

Odysseus: I'm a little impressed he went to trouble of using his kidney as a full stop.

Eurylochus: I don't think he meant to do that, Captain. I'm pretty sure it just...plopped out.

Odysseus' flaw of hubris being consistently portrayed across the musical. He brags to Polyphemus and pisses off two Gods (Athena & Poseidon) in the process. Exactly what Eurylochus feared would happen. What he warned about. Except when he told Odysseus this would happen, he didn't listen, and Luck Runs Out with Odysseus not addressing any of his brothers concerns-which in turns leaves Eurylochus to stew and eventually open the bag.

And then in the Thunderbringer Saga it's brought to it's most extreme-he's so focused on his wife on his son on the life he's missing out he sees no issue sacrificing his own men, and is then shocked when his men turn on him when they see he would feed them to a monster, as if he's the only one with a wife and kid. My head is in my hands y'all.

I’m just letting everyone know, I will not tolerante the Eurylochus slander, his actions are comprensible and understandable. Also he isn’t a hypocrite he just changed for the better, he gain trust and faith in the crew and became more mercyful, like Odysseus at the beginning. While Odysseus became more ruthless and heartless taking the more agressive and safe option even if it meant pain for some, like Eurylochus at the beginning. I will do a bigger post for this later, but the point is, Eurylochus do not deserves the hate.

Odysseus: There’s no length I wouldn’t go if it was you I had to save.

Literally two sagas later:

Odysseus: I have see her

Eurylochus: But we’ll die

Ody: I know

I WISH Jorge had referenced the part of Luck Runs Out where Odysseus tells Eurylochus to be quiet because I feel like that’s an element missing from a lot of Eurylochus interpretations.

“I need you to always be devout and comply with this /Or we'll all die in this” is important because Eurylochus fails to do it by questioning Odysseus’ words (the bag is NOT treasure, it’s storm) and opening the wind bag and his actions lead directly to the facilitation of the death of most of the crew. I hesitate to say he’s to blame because, well, Poseidon is taking revenge due to Odysseus’ decision, but Eurylochus handed him means and perfect opportunity to do it.

So, after that, Eurylochus obeys everything Odysseus says to do. He takes men to explore Circe’s island. He stays put instead of running when Odysseus goes to rescue him. He follows intl the Underworld despite the fact that “hey this witch is helping us now by sending us to death’s realm, this is definitely not a trick” probably raised some questions. He doesn’t (or at least we don’t see) stray or talk to the souls in the Underworld even though Odysseus ends up doing it. He traps and kills the sirens.

He lights and gives out six torches.

So, if devotion to Odysseus wasn’t enough to save them? If Odysseusnis now using that devotion and trust to get them killed as long as he gets to make it home to his wife? What is he meant to do now?

Eurylochus doesn’t sound… fully there, during the second half of Mutiny. Whether there was divine intervention pushing him or madness or simply the pain of it all, he’s not acting rationally. He just saw six of his trusted men brutally murdered, asks Odysseus to lie and say it was a trick, and can’t even kill him when the truth comes out. Odysseus’ wounds are bandaged! (I’m not sure that he doesn’t actually know where Helios’ statue is from btw, both due to the melody and bc it seems outrageous)

We’re all talking about Odysseus pleading for Eurylochus to stop before killing the cows, but Eurylochus is pleading too. He asks how much longer is he expected to suffer, to push through doubt, to follow the orders. And Odysseus’ first plea is “I need to get home” (later “we can get home”). Let’s not forget Odysseus is selfish and Eurylochus knows that, maybe even loves that, but he’s not just hungry, he’s tired.

When Polites gets the location of the sheep cave from the lotus eaters and takes the men to it, he leads several of them to death and himself to his doom. When Eurylochus stumbles upon the cows, does he remember that? Does he deliberately invoke it?

Killing the cows isn’t about the hunger, not really. It’s about the devotion that was asked of him, the price he paid to learn that lesson, and the pain that silence put him through anyway.
