Hybrid Greatness headcanon
Headcanon time! Have you ever wondered why Queen Battlewinner, completely alone, without guards, went on patrol of her state? Don't you think it's extremely dangerous to put the monarch in danger? Then why did she fly on patrols? Well, this headcanon provides the answer. A long time ago, Queen Battlewinner actually went to the continent. And suddenly, on the border with the Icewing kingdom, she meets a cheerful, charming icewing. Although Battlewinner was very loyal to her kingdom, she decided to give icewing at least a chance to survive. As a result, they became friends and later fell in love with each other. Battlewinner began to sometimes run away from the island, justifying it as a “patrol”, in order to meet her lover again. Arriving more and more on the continent, near her beloved dragon, around fresh air and an abundance of food, Battlewinner began to have ideas that not only she was worthy of this, but also her people. Then the idea of completely relocating nightwings to other territories arose in her. Time passed and Battlewinner became a queen. She and her beloved icewing had an egg. They both didn't know what to do with it. Both icewings and nightwings will not have a warm reception for the hybrid baby. There is a conflict between Battlewinner and her lover because the nightwing queen wants to kill her unborn child because it could start a major conflict. The next day, Battlewinner flies back to the place where she and icewing met, however... her lover was not there. Suddenly an unknown icewing arrived, who knew about the relationship between Battlewinner and her lover (he was later expelled for a forbidden relationship and “betrayal”). Icewing attacked her and almost killed her. Then you know the story. Battlewinner was in terrible condition to conceive a new heir and in the end... there was only one hybrid Greatness left, which was the only heir. Battlewinner forced her daughter to cover her white scales with ash so that no one would know about her hybrid origin. Even Greatness herself did not know for a long time that she was a hybrid. Her mother told her that it was a scale disease, and that the ash would be able to make her scales normal (although Greatness has more icewing traits, but they are not very visible). Battlewinner believed that her lover had betrayed her and sent someone to kill her. She began to believe that other tribes, especially icewings, were cunning and hostile to nightwings. She told Greatness that she was forbidden to leave the volcano, until nightwings will be was relocated, because there were too many evil minds on the continent. Once the princess tried to escape to the continent, but during the war, she was badly wounded in the stomach, and in the end she was only convinced by her mother's words that other tribes should be feared. As a result, at the end of the story, Greatness lives like an ordinary nightwing, no longer hiding her white spots on her scales.
Vermis I (2023) is a narrative art book by @Plastiboo. It’s a gorgeous and darkly layered homage to a variety of influences, new and old — Souls games, old videogames like Shadowgate, more recent ones like Shadow of the Colossus, perhaps Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, perhaps Warhammer. There are many possibilities. And yet it also stands as very much its own thing, a world unto itself. The book’s central question “Which flesh is your flesh?” goes a long way in establishing the sorts of horrors we’ll find on our journey.
There are two things that really make Vermis come to a diseased sort of life. The first is the decision to arrange the book as if it were a strategy guide for a videogame that doesn’t exist. This allows for the introduction of little icons and hints at mechanical systems without committing to building them, which is an enticement to brains like mine to figure out how they MIGHT work. And by providing level maps and strats for boss fights and profiles of magic items, I wind up playing the game on a meta level, reflexively, through the act of reading. This sensation is strange and unique and made for one of the most memorable book-experiences I’ve had in a long time.
The other thing is the texture of the art, the way everything is buried under pixelation, cathode grain, moire ripples and other distortions. It unifies all the book’s visuals in a sort of murkiness that add an almost painful sense of mystery and danger and inscrutability to the narrative.
Vermis is a dark masterpiece of creeping dread, and anyone who tells you it isn’t a game to be played isn’t to be trusted.
Jade Mountain Academy students
#1 - Seawing chapter
Part one of my attempt to draw all the students of Jade Mountain Academy. Keep in mind that a lot of these have virtually no usable character information available beyond one or two short quotes, especially the poor sods in the copper and quartz winglets. That means some of this data is going to be made up and will likely conflict with any established popular headcanons. Just trying to make sense of this for myself.
With that out of the way:

Master teach me your ways of drawing
Your art is cool do you have any tips for drawing dragon or just drawing ?
Thank you!!! I put together a little thing for you anon!
I’m self taught and what works for me might not be good for everyone, but I tried my best to highlight my process if that makes sense?
I start off with usually one large gesture/motion line because I feel that helps add some life to my poses!
I highly recommend using references of course, even though I freehanded these ones, I used a lizard pic for reference for this one here in order to get a better idea of where legs would go in the front. You can also see some of the sketchy shapes I used in the face and how I kept adding to them to get something more structured.
Something that was also really helpful for me in terms of classic dragon wings, is to consider them like hands and/or bat wings, I just treat the wings like that and it’s great for seeing how they interact with everything else. With the short claw being like the thumb, and the others being freakishly long fingers.
And some general things that I like to do for my dragons, is lots of scales and layering for texture. You can get a lot of diversity in your dragons even by using the same basic shapes if you change the scale patterns, horns, eye placement, etc. At least that’s what I like to do!
My best advice though is to just have fun and get weird with it! There’s really no limit as to what a dragon is, so fuck it, give that beast six nostrils and cooling vents, or whatever you want! I am a firm believer in delighting in the process of creation. It’s good to challenge yourself, but a challenge should be fun too methinks.
And that’s my two cents, thanks again!
