When does Lucio cry? In what moments and situations?

I think it takes a lot. It’s not that he was ever discouraged from or punished for doing it (if anything, he was encouraged to do it, because even fake-crying made Morga so awkward she’d give in almost immediately, which is what we call “positive reinforcement”) - but crying is a hugely vulnerable thing, and he’s extremely uncomfortable with vulnerability in any capacity.

Lucio doesn’t process his emotions internally - we know his knee-jerk reaction is rage, violence, revenge. Lashing out serves two purposes: it gives him the catharsis of seeing someone else in pain, and it forces the Bad Feeling to an external place. It re-frames the Bad Feeling; instead of coming from inside, he’s upset because the person he attacked is mad at him…which gives him someone to blame.

I don’t think he cries until he’s totally overwhelmed. I think things have to be so bad, on so many levels, that he has no other option.

He definitely cried when he was sick, when he was bedridden, in pain, and left alone - especially if they didn’t let the dogs stay with him at night. Other than that…I don’t even know if he would’ve cried during his amputation (he seems more the type to scream until he passes out from shock), but the recovery from it definitely would’ve pushed him to the edge.

I think he has to feel so weak, and hopeless, and worthless, and alone, and have absolutely no outlet for it - so I think he very rarely cries in front of people, because any witnesses would be someone he could potentially use to make himself feel better (either by cutting them down, or crawling to them for validation). If he does cry with someone around, it would have to be someone he feels completely, 100% safe around, and I don’t know that he has anyone like that, yet. 🐐🌹☕

Imagine Lucio getting hurt during the battle in the last chapter. He’d just won but is wounded. The Apprentice takes him somewhere safe so they can tend to his wound. When they manage to find a small cave, The Apprentice doesn’t hesitate to start treating him.

Lucio tried to reassure them that he’s fine and that he’s dealt with much worse before. It’s not like the wound was going to kill him (again). But then, he notices the look of worry and concern in their eyes. In all his years that he was alive, he’s never seen someone worry about him. There was never a need for people to worry about him because he always managed to look after himself.

The Apprentice looks at him and tells him, “You fought that thing to protect me. Thank you.” And they smile.

Two words. Two words is all it took for him to turn red. Never had anyone thanked him before. To hear those words uttered by the Apprentice, for the first time, something fluttered in his chest. An unfamiliar feeling he couldn’t quite name.

He’s always known The Apprentice was different from the people he’s met when he was alive. And that only made him like them more.
