It's the anniversary of the day Hershel's parents got kidnapped by Targent.

Phoenix knows this. Hershel doesn't know Phoenix knows.

Hershel wakes up that morning thinking he would spend the whole day in bed, or drinking tea, or just doing anything to distract himself from his thoughts while he pretended he was okay.

Phoenix isn't going to have it.

Hershel wakes up under a blanket he didn't fall asleep under. The softest, coziest blanket he has ever felt or seen. With his favorite tea on a saucer on his bedside table, and, of course, the arms of his favorite man in the whole world wrapped around him. He smells some of Phoenix’s freshly baked bread from the kitchen.

It is at this point Hershel realizes Phoenix did something special for him. Hershel is smart. He works out that Phoenix knows what day it is.

Hershel had spent most every year prior to this one in flashbacks and in tears. This one, he spent in love.
