Arús Library (Biblioteca Arús) in Barcelona, Catalonia.

Founded in 1895 after the death of Rossend Arús i Arderiu, who left all his books to Valentí Almirall (yes, that Valentí Almirall, the “father” of modern Catalanism) and Antoni Farnés so they would create a public library for the working class of Barcelona.

It opened with 24,000 volumes on all the areas of knowledge of the moment: philosophy, social sciences, law, religion, biology, botany, medicine, art, music, literature, languages, geography, history… as well as general works and press. The library still has the original collection of the 19th and early 20th centuries, but nowadays it is specialized on social movements. It has a very significant collection on anarchism, other working class movements, and free-masonry. It has over 69,000 volumes.
