I know a company that does both these things and no surprise, when you shop there, the employees are always miserable and agitated. You should kill your managers in such situations imo. The only reason I receive treatment slightly above this is i'm lucky enough to have managers who are also bothered by these business practices. The water one is especially bad if you have heat intolerance, I was so sick regularly before I switched to a department with more leniency regarding water.
Depending on where you live these things may violate labor laws though so if you're in the same situation look into it. However in my experience any labor law violations happen without consequence regardless

The solution to homelessness is housing.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE NEANDERTHAL CHILD WITH DOWN'S SYNDROME? Because they're all I've been thinking about when I'm sad for the past few days. Their existence makes me less sad.
Just a lil post about my "hanging garden" in the middle of the city.
Started it in March with the plants in the boxes on the rail, and recently expanded it with the wine-crate in which I have cucumbers and zucchini plants growing.
Among some nice flowers, the boxes have both thai- and strawberry-mint, which each smell amazing, and also one strawberry plant. Never got to taste one strawberry because birds keep stealing the ripe ones.

Yeah applying for jobs feels dehumanizing. Yeah society is crumbling. Yeah we are all oppressed by the ruling one percenters. Yeah the world is full of cruelty. But you Cannot Stop Me from baking fucking bread with my Beloved Friends. And you can't stop me from drawing flowers. And you can't stop me from moving worms out of the sun back into the dirt in the shade. And you can't stop me from asking for help even when my past experiences have tried to convince me to never do so again. I am STUBBORN and I will CONTINUE LOVING
At the barricades of freedom *vague sizzling of cooked meats*

Expanding a bit on the post I just reblogged, I absolutely HATE how a surprisingly large portion of the population now thinks that feminism is synonymous with being a "girlboss". The idea that working some kind of professional job and being successful at it is the only way to do feminism is insane. People will literally say "feminism has failed us" or "I'm giving up on feminism" when they're unhappy with their jobs. Babes idk how to explain this to you but that is not a problem with feminism that is a problem with your job. You don't need a rich man to provide for you while you take care of the kids you need a goddamn union and some paid leave

>First, we’ve discovered that about a quarter of all the internet connection in or out of the house were ad related. In a few hours, that’s about 10,000 out of 40,000 processed.
>We also discovered that every link on Twitter was blocked. This was solved by whitelisting the https://t.co domain.
>Once out browsing the Web, everything is loading pretty much instantly. It turns out most of that Page Loading malarkey we’ve been accustomed to is related to sites running auctions to sell Ad space to show you before the page loads. All gone now.
>We then found that the Samsung TV (which I really like) is very fond of yapping all about itself to Samsung HQ. All stopped now. No sign of any breakages in its function, so I’m happy enough with that.
>The primary source of distress came from the habitual Lemmings player in the house, who found they could no longer watch ads to build up their in-app gold. A workaround is being considered for this.
>The next ambition is to advance the Ad blocking so that it seamlessly removed YouTube Ads. This is the subject of ongoing research, and tinkering continues. All in all, a very successful experiment.
>Certainly this exceeds my equivalent childhood project of disassembling and assembling our rotary dial telephone. A project whose only utility was finding out how to make the phone ring when nobody was calling.

>Update: All4 on the telly appears not to have any ads any more. Goodbye Arnold Clarke!

>Lemmings problem now solved.
>Can confirm, after small tests, that RTÉ Player ads are now gone and the player on the phone is now just delivering swift, ad free streams at first click.
>Some queries along the lines of “Are you not stealing the internet?” Firstly, this is my network, so I may set it up as I please (or, you know, my son can do it and I can give him a stupid thumbs up in response). But there is a wider question, based on the ads=internet model.
>I’m afraid I passed the You Wouldn’t Download A Car point back when I first installed ad-blocking plug-ins on a browser. But consider my chatty TV. Individual consumer choice is not the method of addressing pervasive commercial surveillance.
>Should I feel morally obliged not to mute the TV when the ads come on? No, this is a standing tension- a clash of interests. But I think my interest in my family not being under intrusive or covert surveillance at home is superior to the ad company’s wish to profile them.

>Aside: 24 hours of Pi Hole stats suggests that Samsung TVs are very chatty. 14,170 chats a day.
>YouTube blocking seems difficult, as the ads usually come from the same domain as the videos. Haven’t tried it, but all of the content can also be delivered from a no-cookies version of the YouTube domain, which doesn’t have the ads. I have asked my son to poke at that idea.

i hate the "meta glasses" with their invisible cameras i hate when people record strangers just-living-their-lives i hate the culture of "it's not illegal so it's fine". people deserve to walk around the city without some nameless freak recording their faces and putting them up on the internet. like dude you don't show your own face how's that for irony huh.
i hate those "testing strangers to see if they're friendly and kind! kindness wins! kindness pays!" clickbait recordings where overwhelmingly it is young, attractive people (largely women) who are being scouted for views and free advertising . they're making you model for them and they reap the benefits. they profit now off of testing you while you fucking exist. i do not want to be fucking tested. i hate the commodification of "kindness" like dude just give random people the money, not because they fucking smiled for it. none of the people recording has any idea about the origin of the term "emotional labor" and none of us could get them to even think about it. i did not apply for this job! and you know what! i actually super am a nice person! i still don't want to be fucking recorded!
& it's so normalized that the comments are always so fucking ignorant like wow the brunette is so evil so mean so twisted just because she didn't smile at a random guy in an intersection. god forbid any person is in hiding due to an abusive situation. no, we need to see if they'll say good morning to a stranger approaching them. i am trying to walk towards my job i am not "unkind" just because i didn't notice your fucked up "social experiment". you fucking weirdo. stop doing this.

Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse. It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
⁂
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

So I have been pondering this post and I'm the one who misunderstood.
Because when I first read the phrase "overgrown balconies" I immediately thought of the suburbs of cities in Thailand or Indonesia. And I thought of this:

Not this:

And I immediately went "Hey, what the fuck is wrong with plants on a balcony???" because, I won't lie, some of the plant arrays I've seen in front of houses/apartments are, as they say, goals.
The (very valid!) critique comes in for the fantasy "forest city" up there (which is also AI, for the record) and not "plants in pots on the sidewalk." So the misunderstanding is wholly on me. I think I got concerned (for lack of a better term) because I happen to really love plants on balconies and in front of buildings like the top two pictures.
Here's another picture of plants on sidewalks and balconies in the Bangkok suburbs:

And this one is from Phnom Penh, Cambodia:

The plants aren't huge, they're mostly potted, they're genuinely aesthetic (as in, they look nice, they break up the view), and growing them is feasible in the local climate. They can shade your balcony, they can provide some privacy screening, and they're just kind of neat.
Sometimes there's something planted right in the ground by a house/apartments, though not always. Sometimes someone has a fuck ton of plants but not everyone has sidewalk plants either. There are also parks and public areas and vacant lots that have plants (that's the city ecosystem), and people with larger yards plant things there, to say nothing of "weeds" and volunteer plants that just find a place and grow.
Do I think the fantasy forest city looks cool? Sure. But it's fantasy. It's sci fi. It can look as cool as it wants in an illustration or in a movie but, yeah, it's not feasible for many different reasons. And that's the difference.

nature held me close and seemed to find no fault with me

Men, generally speaking, are not a systematically oppressed class the same way women are.
And that's not a go-ahead or justification to be racist, homophobic, transphobic, intersexist, ableist etc to men.
That's still bigotry and you're still a bigot. Bigotry isn't suddenly progressive if it's being directed at a man. That's not what hating the patriarchy means.
I mean this question in good faith and I’m not saying any side is wrong, but while I understand the freedom and cultural importance and such of kink at pride, it does worry me thinking about kids attending and seeing certain things. If there’s just leather in part of your outfit I don’t care, but if it’s something more explicit? I don’t know. Everyone who supports kink at pride are people I generally agree with so I think this is something I should believe, but I just can’t help being worried. My question is how is it okay? Like idk why don’t we confine it to adult-only pride spaces? I don’t want kids to be unable to attend the main pride (like the parade) but if you’re exposed to sex too early it messes with mental stuff. I just want an argument from a supporter of it. Thank you in advance and I hope this ask doesn’t upset you!
hello anon! no worries, you haven’t upset me; i’m always happy to share my opinions, and appreciate that you’re questioning things which make you uncomfortable and looking for other perspectives <3
a few years ago, i wrote about kink at pride in this post, which i hope you’ll read first. the tl;dr is: 1) kink at pride doesn’t equal exposure of genitals & public sex, 2) “pride” is more than the pride parade, and 3) kink is not predatory.
if you’ll allow me, i’d like to present a few more ideas on this subject:
1) sex is not dangerous. when i say i’m sex positive, i mean that while sex can be dangerous, it is not uniquely more dangerous than any other risky adult activity. for example, children shouldn’t drink alcohol while their brains are developing, children shouldn’t drive vehicles or handle firearms before they develop impulse control and good judgement, and children shouldn’t rock-climb without learning proper safety protocol. sex is the same; kids shouldn’t have sex until they’re mature enough to understand the logistical and emotional consequences of any given sex act. assuming that they have access to proper sexual education* and safe adults to approach with questions, being ‘exposed’ to sex** is not damaging or harmful to children. however, this almost doesn’t matter to the issue of kink at pride because:
2) public kink does not involve sex. as i’ve said before: public kink displays do not involve public sex. what they do include is: collars, harnesses, fetish masks, bodysuits, all with garments which cover the genitals. you might also see rope, floggers, paddles, handcuffs, and gags. but even at adult-oriented kink events, there is no public sex. if you’re imagining an event where sex is happening, that’s most likely a private orgy with explicit consent from the participants, and will absolutely not be happening at pride events.
3) public kink is easy to explain to children. given that public kink amounts to people in silly outfits and props, kink displays are okay because an adult guardian can explain kink to their child in the same way they would explain alcohol, driving vehicles, or firearms. kink (just like alcohol, driving, and firearms) is something for adults to enjoy, which kids can learn about and explore later, once they’re old enough to engage safely. an adult guardian might say, for example, “those people are playing a game for adults. if you’re confused or uncomfortable, we can look away together until they pass by. if you’re still curious in a few years, we can talk about it then.” this also teaches children how to disengage with things they might find upsetting—a skill which is applicable in all facets of life.
4) the solution is always diversification, not restriction. a thriving queer community has a series of pride events during june. the pride parade shouldn’t be thought of as “main pride”. even as an adult, i don’t always attend the parade. in the past, my pride month has meant i go to drag shows, pride parties in the city square, and queer sporting events. some people are still uncomfortable around any form of kink, and that’s okay! everyone has different comfort levels. so even though i don’t believe public kink displays are harmful to children, i will always advocate for a wider diversity of pride events which are explicitly child-friendly. making safe spaces should always be about creating communities instead of restricting people and things from pre-existing spaces. and because the parade has always included kink, it’s my hill to die on that it should stay that way. even if you’re over-cautious and want to avoid the parade with your children while they’re young, you can always make it something to look forward to when they’re older.
---
i hope this makes sense to you. while i appreciate you trusting me to advocate for this position, i would hate for you to decide to be in favour of kink at pride just because your friends say you should be. for me, part of being queer is actively interrogating my own beliefs and the structures that surround me. and as always, all i’ve written here is based on my personal experiences of pride, and kink events in various canadian cities.
happiest pride month to you, anon! 🌈

* proper sexual education = age appropriate resources about their bodies, reproductive systems, and how reproduction happens. later, information on safe-sex practices (ex. condoms, birth control, lubrication, hygiene), sexual orientation, and the importance of consent.
** exposed to sex = knowing what sex is, learning how sex happens, and/or accidentally seeing sex happening (for example, walking in on adults having sex, catching a sex scene on TV, etc.).
I fucking despise when things fake being higher quality than they are. I don't mean like slapping a slightly misspelled brand name onto an identical non-designer product for purely aesthetic reasons I mean like rivets or thread that are actually glued down rather than punched or stitched. Fake pockets on jeans that are actually just an extra seam. Heavy looking chain that's plastic or very soft flimsy metal rather than anything sturdy. I bought boots which looked like they had a stitched sole 8 months ago and lo and behold the glue holding the sole on is revealing itself by falling apart. You PUT a STITCH IN THERE. YOU HAD THE NEEDLE AND THREAD. AND YOU DIDNT ACTUALLY STITCH DOWN THE FUCKING SOLES. Oh it makes me so mad. Cheap cunts taking the aesthetics of durability or practicality while handing you a product that won't last you the year
it’s actually one of my biggest wishes that prices go down and everything becomes reasonably affordable again btw
