Spent some time today at our National War Memorial in honour of ANZAC Day yesterday. The boat in the photos is the same style as the ones both of my great grandfathers were in on the first day of the Gallipoli campaign for Australia - our first foray as a nation into the war.

New headcanon incoming...

Maverick didn't get his callsign because he was a daredevil, he got it because he's the shortest height allowable for a Naval Aviator, and he's from Dallas, Texas, which is where the NBA Team Mavericks come from.

So other guys are joking around, asking him if becoming a Naval Aviator was a dream when he couldn't make it with the Mavericks, poking fun at his height CONSTANTLY.

Of course, other people take the name the other way, and he leans into it because people making fun of his height isn't something he wants. So the attitude came after the name.
