Breaking the radio silence with a post with wyverns! It's #smaugust so what better time is it to revisit my fantasy world's take on wyverns, dragons, serpents/worms and drakes!? Just plotted down a note on the wyvern phylogony, making a distinction on what animal lineages converged, and what separates them. As of now there's an archosaurian (dinosaurs, crocodiles, pterosaurs) lineage, and a squamatan (lizards) lineage. . . I'm still working on the sculpture of the terror bird, but I'm also taking some well earned time off after working A LOT, and i'm also using this time to reflect and heal after being close to burning out, and transitioning between life stages. I made this menacing looking boar in red clay two days ago and it's soon dry through and through! I'm going to try and bake it in my oven, which is the first time outside school for me (and the first time in an oven and not a makeshift furnace). I did this sculpt to warm me up before trying out my very first super sculpey sculpt! Here's the cockatrice profile! (I think i might paint this one) . The cockatrice is a small wyvern, about the size of a turkey. It's a highly aggressive species, particularly against mammals for some reason. It's not know why, one theory is that mammals around its size are fought or chased off as they represent competition for its food sources, or that the cockatrice makes their territories as safe they can for their offspring. It's not certain wether this behaviour is gender based, or based on the presence of young or anything at all really. Its aggressive nature is also highlighted in its throat pouch; which is adapted to build up a potent blast of noxious and paralyse inducing gass, instead of the normal gass spray/leak of the archosaurian wyverns and the wyrms. The throat pouch is used for either display purposes, or for food/water storage, like the pelican, in many archosaurian wyverns. It is said the mere gaze of a cockatrice is enough to paralyse or even kill one, but its more likely that if you're close enough to look one in the eye, it's probably realised its foul gass in a steady manner instead of its usual blast or spew. . I've started designing several wyverns of late, and have sorted them in archosaurian (dinosaurs, crocodiles, pterosaurs) and squamatan (lizards and snakes) lineages, that I'll go deeper in on at a later time. I enjoy this a lot, and I need it for a long running world building project I've first gone to work at more the past year. My birthday is up so I will be able to get some more material, and with that I'm planning my next sculpt, which will be more ambitious! This time I will make a proper diorama of a #majungasaurus scavenging a drowned #rapetosaurus . However, I haven't decided yet if I'm adding any more creatures like #mahajangasuchus or a small dinosaur lurking around, waiting for their turn to feed. There will be water, there will be sand, there will be plants, and I will make something that has started decaying for the first time ever! First I will give the kelenken a victim tho. I bought a lot of art materials a couple if days ago! Got some soli and grass effect texture paints that I look forward to test out when I make landscapes, a paint mixing glass, some scotch tape for armatures, a new super sculpey that was cheaper than the ones I've bought so far, that also had 3/4ths more clay, a new moleskin sketchbook, and a moleskin watercolour sketchbook! Looking forward to get to test all these out! Recently I've gone back and re-sketched or finished drawings from up to two years ago, and it's fun. But I needed a new moleskin to do new sketches. If you're a young/new artist looking for alternatives to loose paper or cheap sketchbooks, I'd strongly suggest you try a moleskin sketchbook! They don't have to be expensive, most have nice quality paper.
