"Setting Sail,"
A lux introduction fic.
It was late, the sun had long since set and the sky was dimly lit with the pale light of the moon and lamps within the household. It must have been well past midnight, yet the young Khari Mane lay restless in bed.
She found herself shuffling to and from every few moments, the moment she got close to getting comfortable she would be interrupted by an itch or her mind flashing back to the bed time stories her father would tell her.
Stories of pirates, brave warriors who fought for justice under the name of 'Marines', and all sorts of creatures she could only dream of meeting in her homeland of Kholodon. After all, the Grand Line was just that. A bed time story.
As she turned for the final time; getting herself comfortably tucked between the wall, her bed and a few pillows behind her, she heard a faint mumble.
"Bri, are you awake?"
She quietly yelled to the bed behind her, not wishing to turn over for fear she'd lose her comfort in the spot she was laying.
"...yeah, why aren't you asleep?"
Bri 'Lugubrious' Mane, the older brother of Lux. He'd always had a habit of being a light sleeper, whether it be getting a glass of water at 2 in the morning or stepping out of bed to join her parents, it always woke Bri up no matter how quiet Lux was. It was no surprise he was awake, but he did have a point.. why was she awake?
"Thinking keeps me up,"
Khari answered as honestly as she could, she knew he was going to question it, so she just kept to as few words as possible.
"About what?"
Bri rolled on his side, watching his sister from the bed, blinking a few times to adjust his eyesight to the darkness within their room. Not even the moonlight seemed to slip through their curtain tonight.
"About Dad's stories, the pirate ones .. with the justice guys."
He sighed, sitting up, the bed creaking slightly as Bri did so, the sound of his duvet shuffling with each movement he made to get comfortable.
"Maybe they are real. I mean, dad's not even.. normal, we're not normal Luxy. So maybe they're true."
He let out a half-chuckle in an attempt to reassure her. This failed, Khari letting out no response other than a few words.
"I'm going to be a marine Bri."
Lugubrious stiffened in the way he was sat, being at a loss for words. However just as he went to speak, a tall shadow opened their bedroom door, twisting the knob and looming over the two, letting out a brief chuckle before speaking in a calm yet controlled tone.
"You two should be in bed.. however, since you're having such a meaningful conversation, why don't we sort this out with a story? Hm? Maybe about the brilliant marines with the power of mystical fruits.."
. . .
. . .
. . .
...
"Lux!"
Khari stifled, waking from her standing slumber, wiping her eyes to focus her vision before letting out a long, deep yawn.
She then stared at herself in the mirror, mentally coming to terms with how she was now.
She'd done it, become a marine..
But at what cost?
