Tired. Exhausted. Pissed off.

This was all the young Na’vi could think of. Not only did these violent demons kidnap her, now she also had to do something. What kind of imprisonment was that?

The leader of the recombinant squad, Quaritch, sent one of his men on scouting duty and she had to come along. She didn’t even understand why, as she didn’t bother to help anyway and he should have known that.

She quietly hissed out, as the memories and feelings from the past few weeks since her capture flooded her brain. In contrast to her friend Spider – who did his best to annoy the team whenever he could – the Na’vi was much more reserved. The boy found humor in disrespecting and getting a reaction out of them, while throwing every possible insult at their heads. Even if the girl found it amusing if Spider did it, she never did it herself. Not that she was scared or shy, she just didn’t see the point in starting something with them. And while Spider – even if he tried to not make it obvious – has warmed up to some of them, she has not. They were still violent and evil demons.

As she was deep in thought, she didn’t pay much attention to her surroundings. Blindly, the girl followed the man a few feet in front of her – if she could even call him a man. He was technically just an artificial body, filled with unnatural life to be able to better blend in on Pandora. It was painfully obvious to every native, though. Their heavy clothing and gear, as well as their loud and bulky weapons, gave them away. Not to mention their useless extra digits on each hand and each foot. The careless stomping around was a dead giveaway too. But she had to admit, it had been way worse in the beginning. Quaritch has made them take off their shoes after a while to ‘go Na’vi’ and it did actually improve their stealth skills. Nonetheless, the Na’vi had only scoffed at that, seeing the lack of actual interest and commitment to the Na’vi way.

“Keep up, princess”, the second-in-command threw over his shoulder in a stern, but slightly amused tone. He didn’t bother to turn around and just kept walking and scanning the forest for possible threats, his gloved hands tight on his sniper rifle.

He seemed to get a kick out of repeatedly calling her overly ridiculous pet names – she did not – as this was not the first time that happened. Her ears immediately strained back and her tail flicked in irritation.

Since her capture, he was the worst out of all of them. Calling her these names, annoying her on purpose with every possible topic he could think of, trying to embarrass her in front of his teammates. He had even pulled her tail once! Even if it hasn’t hurt physically, it has hurt her pride. Not to mention his overly confident personality, which made him even more insufferable than he already was. The Na’vi has never seen this much confident in another person before, making it hard for her to deal with him. She didn’t lack self-esteem herself, but his made it harder for her for some reason. And, of course, she knew his background; roughly. She knew what he had done to her people, to her planet. What they had all done.

Lyle, was his name. She had overheard Quaritch call him that.

Despite all her built-up anger, she could only hatefully glare at the back of his bald head, to which his kuru was attached. The hairstyle was something she has never seen in her entire life and she refused to believe this was an intentional choice. But she let it go. She did know, sky people were often different than what she was used to and reminded herself to accept, that she couldn’t understand everything. Just like how she didn’t understand, how he wasn’t sweating his ass off with all this clothing in the humid climate of the rainforest.

“Why was I sent with you?”, she asked the question, which she had wondered since they left the others. Her tone was hostile, her ears stayed pinned onto her head.

“Colonel’s orders.” He shrugged, while stepping over a dead tree. “Guess he just needed a break from your attitude.”

Her ears flicked. “What do you mean?” The tone of her voice didn‘t change. It sounded almost grumpy.

He looked over his shoulder with a grin, but didn’t answer. Whatever that was supposed to mean.

That she had an ‘attitude’ was true to an extent, though, and couldn’t be denied. But what did he expect? That he could kidnap Spider and her without any protest, without any fuss? No way.

A snarl.

The girl looked up, startled by the noise. Her ears turned forward again, trying to rotate them into the direction of the sound. She glanced at the corporal in front of her. He has heard it too, also not sure where it came from. His ears were on alert, his eyes wide and his tail swishing behind him. His index finger was on the trigger of his gun – ready to shoot.

A high-pitched howl, almost like a cackle.

She whirled around. Nothing. Slowly, she stepped closer towards Lyle. Unfortunately, he was her only chance, as they had stripped her of all her weapons. She was helpless without him.

“Stay sharp”, he murmured tensely.

A beat.

Then, four slender nantangs – viperwolves – emerged from the trees and bushes around them, circling them and snarling. Their pitch-black silky skin glistened in the light, their lime green eyes gleamed with hostility.

“These fuckers again?”, Lyle growled, clearly annoyed.

“Do not shoot”, the girl warned him, but the warning fell on deaf ears.

The Na’vi crouched down, legs bent, in a defensive stance. Her stomach had churned as soon as she spotted the creatures and her ears were folded back. She gulped, her throat getting dry. Lyle stayed put, not moving an inch and not taking his eyes off of the animals. His ears and tail betrayed his emotional state, though. He was on edge – understandably. These sharp claws and teeth were not to be messed him.

The wolves haven’t attacked yet, meaning they were only waiting for the perfect moment. These animals were intelligent enough to understand, that only one of the two was armed. They were also already familiar with every sorts of guns, since the sky people had invaded the planet.

The only ‘lucky’ thing about this whole situation: They usually hunted in larger groups. Much larger. And these ones also seemed young. Inexperienced. They seemed unsure, if they should even attack at all. One snarled and made a clicking sound to communicate with the others. Lyle had his rifle pointed at the largest one, not letting himself get distracted.

“Uhm”, the girl broke the silent tension, voice filled with distress. If even one of them attacked her, it was over. She couldn’t defend herself.

“Stay cool”, Lyle answered, his tone steady, which made her only more nervous. Her mind reeled, she felt her heartbeat in her throat.

And then everything went too fast to comprehend.

As she turned her front to one wolf, she turned her back to another. And he took that chance, hauling himself towards her with a guttural growl and outstretched claws, ready to sink them into her cobalt blue, striped skin.

But Lyle was faster. He grabbed her arm with his strong hand, pulling her away from the beast and practically throwing her to the side. She let out a scream in surprise and fell to the ground with a thump and a groan. Her hip, on which she landed, stung, but she ignored it. The viperwolf hissed hatefully, when he noticed he didn’t manage to strike her and fell to the ground as well.

Four gun shots, pained shrieking and hissing.

The girl flinched away with a wince, pressing her eyes shut and shielding her face with her arms. She could only hear the typical chittering and growling, practically waiting for some pointy teeth to bore into her flesh or sharp claws to rip her skin apart.

But that never happened.

The noises subsided, the animals scurried away and she dared to open her eyes. In her immediate sight was the recombinant corporal, still standing tall, rifle in his hands and next to him, two of the viperwolves’ bodies. Lifeless. Crimson blood was seeping out of their bullet wounds.

She gasped. In relief or shock, she wasn’t even sure herself. Lyle turned to her, after making sure the other two fled. He swung his gun onto his back.

“You okay?”, he asked, crouching next to her and looking her up and down for any injuries. Nothing was bleeding, so that was at least something. He studied her face. She did look frightened, though. Her golden yellow eyes were wide and her full lips parted, making her little fangs poke out on the sides. She was still panting and her ears were tightly pinned to her head, where her jet black hair had gotten a bit messy.

God, did she look good.

“Why did you kill them?”, she snapped at him and pointed to the corpses a few feet from them with her three-fingered hand. Her hairless brows were pulled together.

He blinked. That was the opposite of how he expected her to react, but she was always good for a surprise, he knew that by now.

“‘Cause they were ‘boutta rip us to shreds?”, he sassily retorted.

“They are animals. It is their nature.”

He rolled his eyes, making her scowl even more. He didn’t need this eco-lecture right now. He saved her and this was her gratitude?

“You–”, she began, but stopped and got interrupted by a sneeze.

He snorted. “You allergic to thanking people?”

She ignored his comment and scrunched up her nose. It was weirdly itchy all of a sudden. She tried to rub it away, but it didn’t help in the slightest. Like an itch you couldn’t scratch. It was insufferable. “Wha–”

Her arms started to tickle now, making her rub over them as well. Her eyes were filled with confusion and worry, not knowing what was happening.

Lyle’s arrogant grin has vanished as well, noticing something in her behavior was not right. “What’s wrong?”

She ran a hand through her hair in stress to get it out of her face. As her fingers slid across her forehead, it felt weirdly sticky. Was she sweating? Yes. She was panting even.

“I– I do not know”, her voice meek, indirectly begging for help. “I feel so itchy and… sticky.”

He placed the back of his hand on her forehead, wanting to feel her temperature. She was right, she was indeed hot. Literally.

He opened his mouth, about to ask again what this plant was, but he paused.

His gaze fell from her face, taking a look at the rest of her body. As it landed on her legs, he noticed how tense her muscles were. Weirdly clenched together, like she had a cramp. Or something…

His mouth parted and his eyes slightly widened as it hit him.
