These are just three of the responses I've had from people who've read my second novel, THINING STRAIGHT, which is about a gay teen whose parents send him to an "ex-gay" camp. Some emails I've received are too personal, too heartbreaking, or both to quote here. Whether proponents of "conversion" therapy are coming from a religious viewpoint or not, there is no evidence anywhere that conversions actually happen. Some people say they've changed their behavior, but usually not for very long. Some people, especially teens like Leelah Alcorn, take their own lives. Even Exodus International, the largest, oldest "ex-gay" organization in the world, finally admitted they lied. They admitted they were unable to "convert" anyone. They closed their doors. LGBTQ people are born right the first time. Anywhere "ex-gay" therapies exist, they must be eradicated. It's hard to believe that Massachusetts, my home state and the first state to acknowledge marriage equality, would still allow these fallacious, suicide-producing efforts to continue. Please.
