summary. What made a kind person like Hakuryuu team up with a rotten Magi? Is it Judar who forces your prince into depravity? Or is it the doing of someone else? So many questions are piling up, but all you truly need is one answer.
notes. originally, i wanted to have y/n and judar have a more lighthearted relationship, but i like the bit of tension between them more 😚

what he desires.
The sky is as blue as it comes, but the Rukh roaming the vast space are as uneasy as the sea during a storm. A few of those glowing birds find home on your finger and shoulder as if they're seeking refuge, a safe place. Certainly, this is no coincidence. Ever since Hakuryuu left you alone in the former palace of Rakushou, the Rukh have been fluttering to and fro without a goal in sight.
You rest your forearms on a wooden railing, eyes gazing down at Rakushou's civilians whose Rukh are just as irregular. The wind blows past your face when your eyes flutter shut and you listen in on the many conversations happening down below. Worries regarding the empress regnant reach your ears, doubting her way of reigning over the great empire, but loving her all the same. A good woman, a witch. A mourning widow, a powerful empress leading her empire through tough times.
"What exactly is happening here, Hakuryuu?," you wonder out loud, voice barely above a whisper and getting carried away by the wind.
The empire is split. A dark premonition tugs at your heart. The very same premonition that creeped over you when a dear friend of yours fell into depravity, killed your beloved king and queen and friends all in one swift, painful swoop.
You shake off those dark memories of another world. This isn't Alma Torran, after all.
"You've been here for quite a while and still don't seem to give a damn about this world which you seem to love so much." Judar appears behind you. His onyx Rukh clash with your pristine ones. "Perhaps, you're not as fond of this world as that stupid King Solomon wants you to, eh?"
You turn to face Judar with your divine staff lowered to the ground and the ruby gem shining menacingly in the sunlight. For the first time, your eyebrows furrow together and the glimmer in your eyes hardens as Judar speaks down on a friend you love and still mourn to this day.
"Have you come merely to harass me, Judar?" You tilt your head to the side.
The fallen Magi smirks before a laugh slips his lips. "Haha, now you've got a good look on your face! I like it," he admits, "but no, I have not come to harass you, as you'd like to call it, granny."
Keenly, you watch as Judar manifests his pitch black staff out of thin air and points the sharp, shimmering tips at your body. "I want you to fight with me, granny! As an ancient fossil, you possess power greater than almost anyone else. There's no better match."
Dumbfounded, you blink at Judar before swiftly turning your back on him with a huff. "My apologies, but I don't fight kids like you," you tease, a smile of your own on your lips.
Judar wants to protest and challenge you once more. He is convinced that fighting you, sparring with you would not only prove to be useful for what is to come, but it would be a whole lot of fun, as well. All this time, Judar believed that fighting to the death with Sinbad would be the most fulfilling action he could take, but then, you came along. But no, you were the epitome of a pacifist. A boring, dull pacifist.
Judar doesn't know what Hakuryuu sees in you. The prince praises you in high tones, claiming that he knows you'll be of use sooner or later, saying that there are things only you can do. Judar thinks Hakuryuu made a mistake by not killing you that day in the tall meadows, but he also doesn't oppose his king's decisions.
He carefully watches the thoughtful look on your face as you gaze upon the current castle in the distance. As a fellow Magi, he knows you can feel it, too. The uneasiness in the air, the uneasiness in destiny itself.
Suddenly, you turn back around, standing tall with the staff shimmering golden and a stern feature adorns the face that is usually so awfully passive. You have to know what is happening to this world which your late friend loves so much, which your comrades fought so hard for to achieve and died for. No longer can you take being so confused by what is happening around you, why Hakuryuu offers you shelter and why he runs off more and more frequently.
And most importantly..What made a kind person like Hakuryuu team up with a rotten Magi? Is it Judar who forces your prince into depravity? Or is it the doing of someone else? So many questions are piling up, but all you truly need is one answer.
"Tell me, Judar. What is it that Hakuryuu desires?"
Judar smirks, puts a hand on his hip and chuckles. So you're finally getting active after all, just like Hakuryuu planned.
"What he truly desires is revenge."

between scrolls, a smile is found.
It is well past night when a lone candle is your only companion as you wander through the halls of the castle that was once the heart of Kou, when Hakutoku still reigned over the growing empire.
The few maids who aid Hakuryuu in his plans are kind enough to tell you stories about the late emperor and his two deceased sons. But whenever you ask about what happened in this castle, their mouths remain as quiet as a grave.
All you know is that some areas smell like fire.
Golden ornaments decorating the walls shimmer in the glow of the small flame in your hand, paintings of the current empress regnant with her sons in arm peer down at you as your bare feet stray across the marble floors. Her smile is kind, perhaps even benevolent, you silently think to yourself and brush a curious finger over one of the artworks.
You stop your musings when murmurs of voices catch your attention and the flicker of another candle illuminates the room ahead of you. Drawing closer, you realize that the whispers belong to Hakuryuu and his fallen Magi, Judar.
Hakuryuu sits in the corner of the study hall, scrolls upon scrolls surrounding him and the desk he's studying at. He takes notes at a feverish speed and the focus in his eyes seems strained, almost forceful. Right behind him, Judar is peering over his King Candidate's shoulder and scratching his head in thought. Whatever they're trying to decode, it appears to lead the two men to a dead end.
"Yo, granny!," Judar calls out as soon as he notices your figure at the threshold. "You can either make yourself useful or keep going, you know?"
"Useful?," you question and approach the two men. Letting your gaze stroll throughout the room, a sense of awe washed over you; you aren't sure if you had ever seen so many scrolls in one place.
Up and down the walls, shelves full of knowledge, some sealed and beautifully decorated with sparkling gems while others are old and plain.
"These are my brother's scrolls. I wanted to go through them in hopes of finding a new spell for Judar to learn." Hakuryuu sits back in his wooden chair and spreads the scroll out for you to read. A sigh slips his lips, your eyes widen in recognition. "But it's all written in Torran."
"Allow me," you say.
Gently, you set your candle down, grab a nearby chair and take a seat next to the prince. Shoulders and knee touching, delicate fingers pull the ancient scroll to your nostalgic self and your eyes float over the words like butter. After so many centuries, a piece of home is finally right there, in your hands.
"Sacrifice your spirit to gain nothingness. Only then will you be able to rule over the void with mind and body only."
Those translated words roll off your tongue like sweet chocolate while your eyes fly from word to word, a smile tugs on the corners of your lips while warmth lingers in every syllable that spills from your lips.
"Whoa! Our granny is actually pretty handy! What do you think, Hakuryuu?" Judar throws an arm over your shoulder, causing you to yelp. He pulls you in like an old friend, like there isn't some sort of weird competitiveness towards you in his pitch black Rukh.
"I'm not a granny, you indecent Magi!," you argue and wriggle yourself out of Judar's grasp.
Hakuryuu skillfully ignores Judar's childish antics and lets a half-smirk grace his royal features. "Sacrifice, nothingness, the ability to rule..," he mumbles, "What exactly does this mean?" Black eyebrows furrow together in confusion, eyes seeking out your kind ones.
Like a priced possession, you hug the scroll to your chest and quietly chuckle to yourself. "It's the spell of an isolation barrier. Within a set area, you render magic useless and you're able to only use your physical strength."
Rudely, Judar snatches the scroll from your delicate hands and scans the letters carefully. Now that they are translated and he understands the intention behind them, he finally has a grasp of what to do, of what he can do to aid his king.
The Magi smirks. "You're not so boring after all, granny."
A bright light illuminates the room, takes the shape of an eight-pointed star and when Judar steps through the magic circle, he completely disappears out of sight. When the magic star dissolves into nothing, a chilly breeze greets your face.
"Where..is he going?" You turn your head towards Hakuryuu who waves your concerns off with a casual flick of his wrist.
"Who knows? He always runs off like that," he states.
As Hakuryuu looks at all the scrolls, not yet translated, he recalls the moment you smiled so genuinely upon seeing the language and translating the words of your mother tongue. The curve on your lips..it is pretty.
"Would you mind translating the other scrolls?" Hakuryuu has already deemed them as useless to his plans, but if this is what it takes to see you smile again and not see that passive look engraved on your face, he would gladly hear you out.
The candle casts an orange hue over your face and you're sure your skin must feel warm with the way your heart skips a beat. It's an unknown feeling, but you don't mind. Instead, you nod your head enthusiastically.
"I would love to, Hakuryuu!"
This time, your smile reaches your eyes which shimmer in the dim light. It's directed towards him, towards his selfish desire to hear you speak a language he is unfamiliar with. And the smile never leaves your lips as you translate the words.
Syllables upon syllables flow from your lips, fingers gently resting upon the fragile paper scrolls while the candle is slowly, steadily melting.
Hakuryuu finds himself drawn in by your knowledge, although he doesn't understand every single word. Perhaps, it's not only your origin, but also your sharp jawline, your focus and happiness blooming in your gaze.
"Is there something on my face?" You stop your reading and touch your cheeks instead, a worried expression on your features as you noticed Hakuryuu staring. "Do I look..weird..?"
Hakuryuu softly shakes his head no.
"This is the first time I've seen you smile."
Oh.
