(Predatory Tunicate)
M. hians is a unique species of tunicate found in the Montery Canyon, as unlike other tunicates which feed by filtering water this species as per it’s name is a predator. They can be found on canyon walls or the seafloor at around 600-3000 feet down where they lay in wait for small animals (mostly zooplankton) to swim into its large mouth, then like a Venus Flytrap is closes it’s mouth and eats the animal opening it when it is ready to eat again. They look like a clear piranha plant too.
