qFit: Mans is built like a brick shithouse—he can totally balance Phil’s additional weight. The first attempt is a bit shaky, sure, but nowadays Phil swoops down or hops up onto Fit’s shoulder and all Fit really has to do is jut out his elbow to give his friend a little more space for his talons to work with. Bam, he’s perched. Works out about 9.9 times out of 10, though Phil delights in trying to catch him off guard.

qEtoiles: He doesn’t have Fit’s bulk on his side, so he’s not as sturdy, but he is strong. The landing is usually a little rough since Etoiles has to work a bit harder to counterbalance the additional weight, but he always finds that center of gravity in no time flat. Phil usually perches with one talon on each of Etoiles’ shoulders since he’s not as w i d e, just so Phil can have a little extra grip. At some point, Etoiles tries fighting a mob while Phil is perched on him, and that goes exactly as well as you would expect.

qForever: Honestly, with all of the hard labor Forever does for his big builds, Phil was expecting him to do better, but the first (several) attempts end up with Forever stumbling over and knocking Phil off of him from his wild arm-pinwheeling. They eventually figure out it’s more doable if Forever himself has something to lean on (a wall, a chair, the butt of his pickaxe) and Phil puts one talon evenly spaced on each shoulder. Phil learns some new swears in Portuguese in the process.

qMissa: Flattened. Full-on face in the floor, mouth full of grass, wind knocked out of his lungs at Mach 5 the first time Phil tries. Phil apologizes profusely, but Missa—once he can breathe again—just rolls over onto his back and asks Phil if they can give it another try. It takes a long, LONG time, but they figure out that if Phil plants his talons on Missa’s shoulder pads and leans forward while Missa leans back, they have a small little window of time where they achieve balance. The best part? Phil gets a perfect view of Missa’s goofy little grin every single time.

Long time no see! Everyone knows me how much I love the narrative of "history repeating" - in this case, Scourge dies only to be reincarnated as the daughter of the cat who killed him. Scourge's "power" (life stealing ;)) is transferred to Squirrelflight, who discovers it upon disemboweling Bramblestar.

As deputy at the time, she becomes leader of Thunderclan - completing the cycle of her past life.

it so wasn't intentional but why does qsmp go SO FUCKING HARD with animal symbolism. like, one of the only members of the federation we actually see is a bear: massively threatening, extremely powerful animals who are at the top of all of their food chains, which if you extend cucurucho to being a Polar bear, one of the most massive and dangerous of all land animals on earth (as well as one of the few solely carnivorous bears) becomes even greater. and though osito bimbo is a bit kinder than cucurucho... well, there are all kinds of bear species and most of them aren't just predators, they're omnivorous, and none of them are as powerful as polar bears, even if they all can pose very significant danger to all other animals. all bears can and will prey on birds. because too, on the other hand, so many of the islanders—for one reason or another—are associated with birds...

these islanders are also some of the people to be tied closest to the federation or to have been fucked with the federation the worst. jaiden and baghera, who both have forgotten pasts with the federation, with jaiden, being Literally dubbed Blue Bird BY the federation and being manipulated by cucurucho into trusting them and using her attachment to her Dead son and the eggs to make that happen. and baghera, the duck, who was cruelly experimented on seemingly as a child, and once escaped the federation's grasp... but has ended up back there all the same. quackity, another duck, who only suffered misfortune throughout his time on the island, being taken by the feds for months and lost his memory and literacy because of nothing but their cruelty. (and there's elquackity too but. I ain't even touching that) and now, phil, a crow... who was lied to and told his children fledged without him, and was trapped by the polar bear in a birdhouse. a cage for a cage.

they're all birds, in a way, associated with beauty, music, frailty, and above all else, freedom. no other creature on earth can wander the earth as freely and without worry as they can, and yet they're all stuck on an inescapable island. they are birds who cannot fly away. and their main tormenter of all is that great polar bear who can hunt them and can kill any bird in the blink of an eye, with its massive strength and the birds' hollow bones and helplessness against a threat such as that. it's probably a coincidence that the federation logo looks so much like a bird cage too, but... that doesn't mean that fact has to be irrelevant, either. how funny they used the cage for a cage line back at phil to cruelly imprison him, too, when crows are one of the smartest animals on earth, and who live in very loving, caring, and social family units?

and lastly let's not forget about the only other entity we've seen which seems to hold any power at all in the federation, el pato, or the manager, a little yellow duck, just like quackity and baghera. what could this mean for this whole story? why a duck would behave so cruelly to all sorts of members of its own kind? or most likely it's something else completely behind the mask only using the image of a duck, something so sweet and recognized that nobody would never want to hurt, to stay in its victims' good graces. whose to say, really... but i think it's all quite interesting.

This post is clinically insane and i am just completely making 90% of this up. but i don't care. I love birds and animals and creatures. ^_^ <3

Leafkit and Squirrelkit make "travelling herbs" for Sandstorm before she goes for a walk. They're delicious, she assures the kits, through tears in her eyes. They run away proudly, she rushes out of camp for the nearest creek to wash her mouth in. Nasty, she mouths, but she'll eat whatever they make. The kits' smiles make it worth a wet face.

Had a ton of fun with this one but don't wanna bog down the main post. A lot of unrelated-to-wc process talk below the cut!

So this was a bit of experimentation with a new brush which turned into exploration into gradient maps.

The original idea was simply to modify csp's mechanical pencil brush into something that felt a bit more natural. It started with simply turning on a bit of tilt-controlled thickness and setting my colour to about 80% grey, rather than black. It didn't quite feel right, but setting the brush to blend with the subcolour on each tip, setting the subcolour to the 80% grey and the main colour to the canvas' colour, then setting the brush's blend mode to darken gave me a brush that felt like it had FAR finer line control.

The lines themselves look like this (on a more saturated bg to show how the values layer/fade in and out with pressure and tilt):

This is where the gradient maps come in. The way I usually change my linearts' colours is to make a new layer, mask over it, and manually paint. It gives a lot of control to your end result, but it's time consuming and often takes many adjustments to make it feel like it has enough contrast to make the drawing actually *readable.* If I wanted to add a gradient map to the lineart, it would be unable to read the transparency and would pick from the single value that the lineart is (usually black), then the transparency would take over. This gives me a dull result.

With the "transparency" being an actual colour, that gives it an actual value for the gradient map to read. So instead of having your lines fade from black to the colour behind it (often desaturating as it goes), it'll go from something like dark blue -> reddish-grey -> orange -> yellow. It adds a little something i think, and while I absolutely don't have this down pat, it could be something interesting to explore!

I also wanted to go further with this piece, namely painting it rather than a shading layer set on overlay with the aforementioned gradient maps all over it but ... it wasnt happening. The art skills clocked out for the day. That said, I definitely want to explore how this would look if I coloured everything for realsies rather than doing the fallback method. Could be where they really shine!

Citrus Reamer

I can’t get over how funny but also how interesting Cucurucho’s intense hatred towards Tubbo is. Like you’d think Cucurucho would also hate Cellbit like that given how many times they’ve clashed, but they still regard Cellbit with more amusement than genuine annoyance. They chased Cellbit with a chainsaw during his first week on the island, but you could tell Cucurucho had fun tormenting him and was doing a lot of it for kicks. And yknow what? Cellbit gave them exactly the reaction they wanted. He was terrified.

But Tubbo? Cucurucho pulls a gun on Tubbo and he just goes “oh chill the fuck out and put the gun down.” They yell at Tubbo for his drill and he starts planning to build an even bigger one. And I think that’s what grinds Cucurucho’s gears so much. No matter what they do, Tubbo won’t give them the reaction they want. They can’t crack him. I think they know that if they threw Tubbo into a dark underground maze and chased him with a chainsaw a la Horror Movie Protagonist Cellbit he might get freaked out for a second, but then he’d just be like “what are you a fucking theatre kid?”

All this is to say I think Tubbo pisses Cucurucho off in a way few other islanders have been able to do, and because of that, they’re not going to stop until they find out exactly what will make Tubbo break

Sure, they're not dead, but they still give off the same vibe to me. You know? The empty casings of a spent thing? Dust gathering in the recesses where something used to be? Sure, they're not dead, but they still set off my Necroentomophobia. Fear of dead bugs! Did you know that? Did you know people could be scared of dead bugs? Whatever. It's not the same as being scared of a bug, sure. But I can be scared of a lot of bugs. Sure, little things, like the humble lady bug- not scary. Butterflies, scant as they are, are only off-putting to me. The beautiful moth? Well, I love it, but I don't want to hurt it. It's whimsical, fat body makes me nervous. I don't want to squish it by accident! Because then it would be a dead bug.

And that's worse. It's like, not precisely a direct fear of a dead bug. It won't leap at me in a defiant rage, or be waiting for me around the scary corner. It's more like a shortcut to existential dread. It's a combination of 'ew!' and 'I am going to die one day' and more importantly, if a bug is dead, something has killed it. And you never know if that something is still lurking around. Just kidding. Do you know what a cicada shell is made of? That's right. It's the happy chitin! I don't have an issue with chitin. We're not chitinous beasts, but we have the enzymes to break them down. Humans, that is. This isn't a science fiction piece. This is my blog. I've always thought chitin was interesting though- it's a natural armor made for little guys ostensibly. Little guys in the sense, that it is for bugs only. Well, crabs have chitin, and they can get pretty big- The spider crab can grow over 300 feet in diameter. Just kidding, it can't do that. It's pretty big though. At this point, you'd think: 'Okay- crab reference, and a direct link to the enzymes to break down chitin. Do we eat them? Should we eat the Cicada shells?' Well, I'm not going to. That sounds kind of scary to me. Would you? Would you eat the shell of a thing? I can't imagine it tastes good. I'm eating potato chips right now. They're yummy, and crunchy, and in many ways- the opposite of the humble cicada's false corpse. A lying bug. A lying, cheating, swarming thing. A bug we don't like. A bug we have to deal with. Don't we have to deal with everything? Would it be easier to show less mercy to the little things? It wouldn't, and it would be mean. And that's worse. Anyway, to answer your question, you turn them into mulch, apparently. Or bury them in a hole. Through my research, those were the only two real options we have. There's also 'add them to compost.' So that's three, you have three options. Do you want my opinion? No? Moving on then. There's also a fourth option- a telling one, at that. A sort of 'secret option' lots of people choose. 'Let them decompose on your lawn.' Right? Right, the easy one? Might as well call it 'do nothing.' Doing nothing is always a choice, sure, but when you give me the choice to 'do nothing' in a game, or choose your own adventure, it always seems like a lazy choice on the developer's part. And sure, from your real life perspective, it's probably the easiest. But from a game design perspective? You have to account for the player sitting and watching. What happens if I don't intervene? What happens if I let it continue? Well, in the case of the empty cicada, they stink apparently. I've never noticed it, and we have cicadas here- but I've been lucky enough to never be out in or see a swarm. A predecessor of mine once recalled a story in which the swarm was so bad, you couldn't walk outside without crushing them on the sidewalks "Ew," is what I thought. Maybe they only smell if there's hundreds of them. Thousands? No, probably just hundreds. Not saying they wouldn't smell more if there were lots, I'm saying they probably start being noticeable at around a hundred. Nothing wrong with that. Not sure what the smell is, though. Do you? You should put them in a hole.
