This is amazing. The cloth is so sheer, so fine. Yet there are folds and ripples too.

And it's all in stone. Utterly mind-blowing.

(Tried to google image search to find the original sculptor, but no such luck.

I asked all of the gay male students in the room to raise their hand if in the past week they touched a woman’s body without her consent. After a moment of hesitation, all of the hands of the gay men in the room went up. I then asked the same gay men to raise their hand if in the past week they offered a woman unsolicited advice about how to “improve” her body or her fashion. Once again, after a moment of hesitation, all of the hands in the room went up. These questions came after a brief exploration of gay men’s relationship to American fashion and women’s bodies. That dialogue included recognizing that gay men in the United States are often hailed as the experts of women’s fashion and by proxy women’s bodies. In addition to this there is a dominant logic that suggests that because gay men have no conscious desire to be sexually intimate with women, our uninvited touching and groping (physical assault) is benign.”

Gay Men’s Sexism and Women’s Bodies by Yolo Akili (via plightofthepretty)

In my experience my female friends are the ones always asking me for fashion advice. Simply assuming that because I’m a gay man I care about clothing, which I don’t… at all. In fact my female friend recently asked me if she could share her nude selfies so I could tell her what I thought of her body. So it’s not just gay men making women uncomfortable, it works both ways.

(via andrewartwork)

Whew. Okay.

I'm a gay guy. I have not once groped a woman (not even drunk. Because, you know. I go for the dudes. (And I don't even grope them drunk.) I don't offer unsolicited fashion advice. (I've been asked once or twice. The results were not pretty, as I can be pretty blunt. E.g., "Those shoes look like they were left out in the sun in the desert all summer." (This was not hyperbole. They were all cracked and stuff.))

I know there's this "one of the girls" thing that pop culture tells me I'm supposed to do. I'm supposed to have fag hags or fruit flies or whatever it is this week. We're supposed to go shopping in a pack of 2-4 females and one gay guy, titter at whatever crosses our path, gossip like mad, be catty and bubbly, and I'm supposed to be the authority on all-things-fashion.

That is not my life. Not even once.

And the crazy thing is, I know a number of other gay guys (fancy that), and not one of them lives that life. The closest I can think of is one guy who does hair and makeup for a living, so it's kind of his job to offer advice on how to look good. (The paid money for doing it kind of job.) But frankly, he's too professional to start boob-grabbing on the fly.

So I don't know where this alleged class was, where all the gay guys supposedly raised their hands. (Fashion school? A rehabilitative class for gropers?) Frankly, it all smells like bs to me. (Were all the men in the class gay? Had the author slept with them all? Was there an "all the gays out yourselves now" session before the groping questions? How else would he know whether "all" the gay men in the class raised their hands?

Assuming that this was a real class, that all the gay men did in fact raise their hands, was any of it actually real? I seem to recall an awful lot of groupthink going on, back at the universityh. At times it was like some of the crap that went on during the Cultural Revolution: denounce your own impure thoughts! (Whether true or not.)

But hey. Maybe I just live in a bubble. A bubble where the gay guys are fairly ordinary fellows, who don't conform to stupid stereotypes. Maybe there's a whole wide world out there, outside my magic bubble, where every gay man runs around groping women and telling them how to dress.

But I doubt it. Because at the end of the day, people are people. Good, bad, and the oh-so-many shades of in between. I have yet to find a group of people where every single member acts exactly the same way, according to stereotype. In my experience, not all women are the same. Not all men. Not all gays, and not all straights. Not all members of a certain religion, race, ethnic group, etc.

And that's really the heart of my problem with the story. It's oh-so-convenient, how "all" the gay men in the room magically conformed to stereotype. All of them are gropers, all of them are pushy fashionistas. Not a single one respects a women enough to keep his hands or his opinions to himself.

Gay men are monsters, apparently. All of them. (Not a single maiden is safe from the unbound homosexual man!)

And of course there's the story's subtitle, involving "male privilege." And that makes me suspicious too. Because apparently penis is the enemy. And penis always thinks it has "male privilege" which is apparently some sort of license for bad behavior. (Because all men always conform to stereotype.) And since gay men have penis, they need to be forced to fit the stereotype as well. And thus we have this lovely "factual" scenario, which involves all the gay men in the room confessing that they behave badly, by running amok and groping women.  Because heaven forfend a member of the male sex should act like a rational human being.

tl;dr The article seems like hooey to me.

Or not.

Lordy, people.

It's 2013, almost 2014. Snopes has been around since 1995. If this story were true, it would be fascinating. It's not true. Spreading misinformation is not helpful. Google is your friend. Sometimes it links you to snopes.

Le sigh.

It's funnier if you can read the German inscription, which roughly translates to "Tell him to lick my ass." (From a Goethe play, where Goetz is asked to surrender.)

What we see through social media is a generation of ignorant social activists. Young men and women all too willing to care about and defend something they don’t truly understand and refuse to educate themselves further on because they assume the limited information they receive has been vetted by someone more knowledgeable than themselves. This happens on both sides of the fence, with both conservatives and liberals. I’ve seen arguably intelligent young men and women stand up at banquets and rallies, demanding answers about things like healthcare, DOMA, federal military actions. Asking questions about things they’ve seen on Facebook, on twitter, things that they’ve taken little to no time to research for themselves, and they look like fools. No matter their age, they paint themselves with a red mark that announces ‘I’m not mature enough to be here, to discuss these issues’. But even so, it isn’t truly about age. It’s about social awareness. You are not discounted until you make a mistake. Say the wrong thing or quote the wrong statistic. Until then, your legitimacy remains intact. Tumblr is like this. I’ve seen people furious over gay rights legislation that doesn’t actually exist. Wars that haven’t happened. Most recently text posts with tens of thousands of notes alleging that China and Russia are going to go to war with the US over Syria. Blogs relaying damaging misinformation written by individuals who can’t seem to be bothered to read a newspaper or use google properly. This is a crippling trend, and no one sees it. These people get untold attention and affirmation until one person with a large enough follower count points out the flaw in their argument. Corrects the mistake, and shifts the tide. But this doesn’t fix the thousands of people who liked and reblogged the original post. The damage is done. If there is one thing I’ve learned from working on political campaigns, very little is more damaging than an activist who argues only one side of the story without recognizing the existence of the other; because your opinion, no matter how solid and seemingly factually based, is invalid the second your audience realizes they know more than you. And the result of all of this is a generation of young activists who don’t understand why they aren’t being taken seriously.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=coal-development-threatens-great-barrier-reef

The danger isn't from coal mines *in* the reef.

OP: "COAL MINERS WANT TO BUILD THE BIGGEST COAL MINES IN THE WORLD THROUGH THIS BEAUTIFUL REEF. "

Are you kidding me?

No, they want to put more ports nearby. And there's worry that ships will harm the reef indirectly, due to the dredging necessary for the ports, and the sediment, etc. (Ship pollution probably doesn't help.)

No one is going to put a mine "through" the reef. WTF. How would you get a mine down there? In the ocean? Are you bloody bonkers? Do you have no idea how coal mining works? (Hint: it ain't like oil.)

Seriously tumblr. This is why you suck.
