Just an observation...Before everyone started applauding during the promotion ceremony, I think they’d happily forgotten there was anyone else there.

Fic prompt: Hope
This was for a prompt from @purplejellosg1 which I accidentally deleted. Oops. Anyway, the prompt was “hope”. Thank you for the prompt and fingers crossed you enjoy <3
Hope
Jack knows this not-thing between him and Carter probably won’t last.
Okay, well, that’s a lie. He’s pretty much given up on ever getting over Carter. She’s one of the smartest people on the planet and she’s exactly his type, but more than that, she’s compassionate, caring, loyal, funny. Samantha Carter is all his dreams at once, and his heart rolled into her lap ages ago.
But he’s not so blind as to think that she feels the same. Jack knows himself, and sure, he has some good qualities. He knows he’s a good tactician, and he’s not the dullest knife in the barrel, despite the dumb act. And he cleans up well, he supposes. But he’s been around the block, too, and he’s learned the hard way that those qualities are ones befitting a career black ops soldier, not the ones that women look for over a fancy dinner and a glass of wine, not to mention a serious relationship. At the end of the day, Jack O'Neill is a sarcastic, paranoid, battleworn soldier who’s been scarred by a few too many prisons and who hurts those he loves most in the worst ways.
So despite the za'tarc testing and the ice planet, Jack has never been foolish enough to believe that any…feelings…Carter may or may not have for him will last.
But like in everything else, Samantha Carter is an exception. And so, as the months roll into years and the war with the Goa'uld marches onward, no end in sight, Jack’s dreams are still intact.
Because his hope for a life with her after all this…it’s still there. It’s a tiny ember that glows when she smiles at him in the commissary, when she walks with him down alien Main Street, shoulders bumping every few steps. When she annotates his doodles in the briefing room without missing a beat. When she gives him an indulgent smile during her technobabble lectures. When she laughs at his stupid jokes or holds back a smile at his insults. When she falls asleep on his couch during team night, leaves her things on his coffee table and in his kitchen. When she stops by to save him from paperwork. When she stares solemnly at him by the light of an alien campfire, lost in thought. When she teases him and drags him out of his black moods and a million other tiny little gestures, things Jack figures she probably doesn’t even notice she’s doing, but loves her for all the same.
She fuels his hope, and so he finds himself repaying the favor, being her unwavering support every time they need her to pull off a miracle, bend space and time, blow up a sun. And if, in moments of weakness, he spends a little time hoping for a happy ending that ends with them together, well, he figures that counts, too, kinda. He’s hoping that Carter will get a life. And if he wants that life to be with him, well. Maybe she wouldn’t mind.
And when Sam shows up at his doorstep one night, and tells him she wants to try, that she’s spoken to General Hammond and the Joint Chiefs, who are willing to work with them, if he’s still interested, that hope bursts into flames and he knows that he never should have doubted Samantha Carter.
She’s done the impossible, once again. Once again, all he’s done is hope.
But maybe that’s enough.
