Emily Brontë, The Complete Poems
women are taught to view their bodies in terms of fragmentation. by this, i mean that our bodies are viewed as a combination of different parts. we are “flabby thighs” and “too-big nose” and “hairy legs” and “slanted eyes”. the problem with this is that women begin to think about their own body as a compilation of separate areas, and when we see ourselves as a compilation, we forget what and who we are. women are taught of a fragmented body, which leads to a fragmented sense of self, which leads to a fragmented relationship with the self. we begin to see the fragments of ourselves as parts to prune, as if ridding ourselves of all our parts would show something underneath other than ourselves. women learn to only value certain parts of the body, because they are told that the body is just that: parts. the body is not a thing which has attached itself to you in pieces. your existence is a whole.
“Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.”
