A day after the first ship from Marley arrives at our port, I have a dream. The setting is hazy, unsettling, but it is easy to make out where I am – that beach, with grey walls looming behind me, their size fluctuating. I stand here, my feet in the water, watching how the fog swallows up the horizon. The seashells tell me their secrets. A scarf thrashes around in the tide, flashing red against the endless blue. The waves bring it tangled to my feet. I pick it up and it speaks to me of bloody knives and pomegranates. The scarf shifts into a feather as lighting strikes the surface of the water. There's a gush of wind that sends it flying, and I somehow know that it will never be too far away, yet never close enough to reach. Its whispers piercing through the fog, it speaks to me of flames and butterflies. I fall through the ground into a pile of leaves, and familiar crisp air fills my lungs. I run as the wind blows songs of freedom, melodies of love and death and all that is in-between.
