Today’s first of two women’s history month posts is going to be about the show Totally Spies. The show is a popular French animated franchise that blends comedy and spy action.
The show was created by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel and was produced by Marathon and Image Entertainment. The show started with the rise of girl bands around the tail end of the ‘90s. Michel and Demersay wanted to capitalize on this boom, and started to form a three member girl band of their own to build a series. A panel of judges looked over video demos, and eventually decided upon an act that would later release a single. The idea was to establish Totally Spies as a real-world musical group and release a full album. However, this aspect did not come to pass. Instead, a series inspired by aspects of Japanese anime (something not uncommon for several contemporary French cartoons) came to be.
Michel said part of his desire to make the show came from noticing that there were several action shows marketed towards boys, but none for girls, and claimed that it was a blend of James Bond and Clueless. The series aired in America in fall 2001, on ABC Family, and later went on to broadcast in countries like France and Canada on channels like TF1 and Teletoon. It became very successful.
The show took place in Beverly Hills, California, and revolved around three teenage girls who led a double life as spies. Clover was a super feminine material girl, Sam an intellectual redhead, and Alex a friendly tomboyish girl. The three worked for the WOOHP (World Organization of Human Protection) spy agency, commandeered by the quirky and sophisticated Jerry. The girls had to balance their spy life–with travelling the world, fighting villains, and sneaking around–with their high school life of getting good grades, dealing with bullies, and dealing with boys. The show starred Andrea Baker, Jennifer Hale, and Katie Leigh as Clover, Sam, and Alex respectively (the french dub starred Fily Keita, Claire Guyot, and Céline Mauge in the same roles).
The initial run lasted for over 100 episodes, and several seasons. The initial run ended around 2008, but a sixth season began development in 2013. The season premiered at the Palace of Versailles, and lasted 26 episodes. It began airing on French television in fall 2013, and Canadian television a year later. The show also had a crossover episode with Marathon’s other series Martin Mystery. A spinoff called The Amazing Spiez! began airing 2009, about a group of younger WOOHP agents.
The series spawned video games, comic books, and more. In America, it primarily aired on Cartoon Network cartoon block Miguzi, alongside other action cartoons from various international markets.
