au note: a short drabble i wrote based on stay by rihanna, especially when i heard this slowed version for the first time, i almost cried because of how sad the melody is, longing, sadness

You never meant to see him again—not like this, not when you were still so raw. Yet here you were, standing in the middle of his living room, the air thick with the silence that had settled between you both months ago. Rafe’s eyes were the same—blue, piercing, but now carrying a weight they hadn’t before.

“Why did you come?” he asked, his voice low, almost afraid of the answer.

You swallowed hard, your heart hammering in your chest as you struggled to find the words. “I don’t know,” you finally whispered. “I thought I could just… let go. But I can’t, Rafe. I can’t move on.”

Rafe looked away, his jaw clenching. “We broke up for a reason,” he said, though his tone lacked conviction. It was as if he was trying to convince himself as much as you. “We were bad for each other. It had to end.”

“But it wasn’t toxic,” you countered, your voice breaking. “It wasn’t. We just… we loved each other too much, too intensely. It scared us. It scared me.”

His eyes met yours again, and for a moment, you saw the same vulnerability, the same ache that mirrored your own. “You think I don’t know that?” he said, his voice softening. “You think I don’t feel the same way?”

“Then why did we do this?” you cried out, tears welling up in your eyes. “Why did we throw it all away?”

Rafe closed the distance between you in two quick strides, his hands coming to rest on your arms, holding you close but not too close. “Because we didn’t know how to love each other without hurting ourselves,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t miss you. Every single day, I miss you.”

The tears fell then, hot and fast, as you leaned into his touch, feeling the warmth of his hands against your skin. “I don’t know how to stop loving you, Rafe,” you admitted, your voice trembling. “I don’t think I ever will.”

He pulled you into his chest, his arms wrapping around you in a desperate embrace. “Maybe we’re not supposed to stop,” he whispered into your hair. “Maybe we just need time to figure out how to do it right.”

You pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, searching for the hope you so desperately needed. “Do you think we can?”

Rafe’s thumb brushed away a tear from your cheek, his gaze softening as he nodded. “I don’t know,” he admitted, “but I want to try. For you, for us.”

The uncertainty lingered, but there was a flicker of hope now, a small light in the darkness that had consumed you both. It wasn’t a promise of happily ever after, but it was something—something you could hold onto.

And as Rafe leaned in, his lips brushing yours in a kiss that felt like both an apology and a beginning, you allowed yourself to believe that maybe, just maybe, love could find a way.
