I swear to god that green day has had this exact same "scandal" like five times now.

it's interesting how every month or so (usually on twitter) there will be male-centric discourse on otomes, typically "why won't more otomes let me play as a man" or "why do I have to date men in otomes", in much more volume than there was years ago. I can only imagine that these sentiments typically stem from general anime fans trying to get into otomes with the misconception that dating sim = otome and vice versa.

for those unaware, not every dating sim is an otome and not every otome is a dating sim (though quite a few are). otome, as we define it in English-speaking fandoms, is a game with a female protagonist and male love interests. the kind of MC (faceless; customizable look & gender; fully fleshed out background), the length of the game, and the amount & gender of the love interests have varied over the years, but the constant is that otome has the choice to play as a female MC with at least some male LIs. most otomes are a type of visual novel, while dating sims are a subset of the visual novel medium focused on stat raising. dating sims can be any kind of romance orientation and not all romance visual novels are dating sims.

so because there's this misconception some have of what an otome actually is, we get repeating discourse every few weeks/months where someone comes to the ice cream shop asking for chicken tenders. that's not what we serve here. a lot of times these people mean well- they just want a certain kind of game but don't know the right terminology for it. sometimes they don't mean well and the conversations devolve into misogyny, but we're not here to discuss that aspect of it.

as more people become aware of visual novels and dating sims as a whole, these are the kind of growing pains the audience is going to face sadly. aside from telling people to Google terminology, I will leave you with this- if you see someone or you're interested in playing otome-like games that aren't just female MCs or male LIs, mess around with tags on itchio and you'll find a plethora of indie romance visual novels.

Larian: Horrifying. We should check on Astarion.

Instead of doing NanoWriMo I will be doing something where I try to aim for writing an actual average of 400 words a day for the month of November in memory of Terry Pratchett, who as far as I know never thought telling a computer to write a book for you is a good way to hone your skills as a writer.

I should pre-face this with the fact that I still look very small and feminine at first glance, and I am currently at work where most people don’t know me too well

We DO NOT talk enough about Ulder Ravengard's diary. Like, the fact that Ulder took Wyll for walks, that Wyll asked questions about everything and Ulder took the time to try and answer. That Ulder had to fish his son out of the water because he was trying to see mermaids. That Ulder notes how Wyll lost his new shoes, in that way that a parent mourns clothing or items getting ruined but the relief that your child is okay renders those things meaningless. That Ulder sat down some evening, opened his journal, and wrote about his day with Wyll. That it was important to Ulder to record how Wyll was in his arms, teary-eyed over mermaids. That the journal's description mentions how the journal is well-used, that Ulder must have revisited those pages again and again.

[DEVLOG] Phantasia Jam 2024 - Week 4 and 5

Hello everyone! It’s Rain, here again with another devlog for Project: Maselosia, my project for Phantasia Game Jam 2024.

I'm back from my vacation! I had a lovely time and I'm ready to start working on my game again.

UI & Menus

I did not make the game menus (aside from a few sketches), but, as you saw in this week's screenshot, we now have a nice textbox and matching choice boxes!

Game Art

I did not draw at all, but will focus on CGs this week.

Writing

I was able to write a little during my trip. I could finish up until an important POV change.

Audio & Puzzles

Not a lot of work has been done on this front. Audio is typically sorted out at the end of a scene, and I couldn't work on puzzles while I was away.

Final thoughts

I want to work on the game's itch.io page and finish it before the end of the month, which means that you will see the real logo and the game's official name very soon!

Unrelated to Project: Maselosia, but I want to update Stardust ★ Arcadis's demo as well.

Project: Maselosia is a is a fantasy puzzle game where two shapeshifters try to escape a cult and go back to their normal lives. According to the Phantasia Game Jam rules, chapter one will be released before October 31st and will be available for download on itch.io!

Chat they made Minecraft into a silly goofy cringe movie even through Minecraft is actually about life and earth and the universe and tearing meaning out of the ground and molding it with your hands into something that you can be proud of. They made the pink sheep look ugly and funny for a cheap laugh when it should’ve been a beautiful moment where you, age eleven, come across this rarity, this beautiful anomaly and you hold its face in your hands and stare into its chocolate brown eyes and you realize what the whole world is about. It's baffling to me how differently Solas and Anders are treated by the narrative and the writers

Both commit acts of incredible devastation that kill people in the hopes of bringing forth a better world.

But Solas is often depicted as sympathetic, as caring about people despite what he's trying to do and the writers seem to want us to empathize with him

And yet Anders is demonized at every turn and is talked about like he just Went Crazy. Even the way Varric talks about them is very different
