This doesnt even make sense... I get no rest.
Spike didn't make anything right with her when he got a soul, not until after she had scared everyone away on his behalf. Before all that, he was moaning in a basement (I suppose this was meant to be his admittance of guilt? Angel's journey was better). He then killed and sired dozens of people because The First got in his head (Angel refused with every fiber of his being), and then he spent some time chained in her basement; "forcing" Buffy to literally turn on the people she's meant to protect, in order to protect him from them. His redemption became more important than the consistency of her character.
Listen, she stabbed an ensouled Angel in the heart to save the world in S2. She flung herself to sacrificial death to save the world in S5. She had come full circle and understood what it took to protect innocent people. But when it came to Spike, she was willing to sacrifice innocents, family, friends, and herself to keep him alive, for some ambiguous reason.
She would have never let Angel kill a string of innocent people without a fight. She would have dusted him ten times over. And we've seen her kill him. That was power. But the writers decided Spike was suddenly too "important" to adhere to the title and themes of the show. Yikes.
Spike literally took away her power. First she was beaten down and literally bullied into sleeping with him. He assaults her. We're meant to read that as partly being her fault. Then, she's forced to spend an inordinate amount of time rehabilitating the very demon who had sexually assaulted her, while not having that acknowledged by the writers. Which redirects the show's focus to Spike's rehabilitation, because no mention is made of her trauma. Between Spike and Willow and everyone else, there was almost no room for her character's journey anymore.
Angel was initially written to be something of a special case, with a larger purpose. Spike only did the few good things he did out of selfish motivations. Imagine suggesting that your lead female character needs such a subservient boyfriend in order to "become the power". I don't see how that reflects well when you directly compare him to Angel. You're suggesting that unlike Angel, the burgeoning leader with a philosophy, Spike, the murderous pet, was a better fit for Buffy. She can't have a formerly villainous partner with an actual destiny? If not Angel, Faith was right there. Why not let her be single. Its not a crime. Pls. Spike was a burden on Buffy (the show and character) and he didn't even have the good sense to leave. Tho, I guess he really had nowhere to go, which says it all.
It's funny how negatively fandom has impacted the show. Spike went from being one of many to being "the one", while Buffy went from being "the one", to being one of many. Buffy went from sacrificing her boyfriend for the good of humanity, to sacrificing her humanity for her boyfriend. I don't call that power. I'm not drinking the diabetes inducing koolaid.
sometimes… it is healthier and more fun to enjoy media without immersing yourself in its fandom. like making judgments and analyzing + interpreting things without having your opinions be shaped by the general fandom consensus is so sexy, and being a fan of a character without ever posting about them and just silently enjoying them on your own can be so nice
idk what it is about pride and prejudice that’s so appealing. maybe it’s the fantasy of telling a man he’s self centred and arrogant and he believes it and changes for the better
