The Orange Side (Sanders Sides)

Hello guys! I have zero clue if this has been done before, but I was speculating on the orange side, and I think I have a hypothesis as to who they may be. I’ve seen a couple of theories, including the ever popular “insanity” theory, but I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like this. If it’s been done, please let me know! (By the way, this whole post is going to be functioning under the assumption that there are seven sides, the “full rainbow” theory.) I’ve seen a lot of speculation as well about “opposite” or “complementary” sides, which I found to roughly stack up like this:

Logan & ...Virgil?

There’s also been a lot of color symbolism and complimentary sides discussions, ending up in some deciding that Virgil and Deciet would be opposites, or something esle to that effect. As true as it seems with Roman and Remus, and as plausable a theory as it could be for the others, I don’t believe this to be true.

Let’s forget about colors for a second, let’s focus on opposites. If we look at the most basic traits that each side embodies, I think we can sync up some opposites:

“Good” and “bad” creativity

“Good” and “bad” morals

Now, an argument can be made as well for Logan and Virgil to be “good” and “bad” thinking, or something along those lines, but I feel in this case that would both disrupt the color theory that seemed to fit everyone so nicely together, and leave the orange side as a free floating dark side/other. While plausible, it didn’t really seem to make as much sense as it should have to me.

Now, take a moment to consider the light sides themselves. They’re all emotive, and seem to represent (to an extent) emotions, something that becomes a little bit of a grey zone when you look to the dark sides/others. All of them are emotion based, except Logan. And if there are supposed to be seven sides, one would expect there to be as close to an even split between light and dark as is possible. But seven doesn’t divide evenly into two parts, and someone is going to sway the balance to light or dark/other.

Unless that’s not how it works at all. Unless logic isn’t really a “light” side, it’s actually it’s own thing. If you think about it, it (maybe) makes sense. You have three “sets” of counterparts, all deciding your actions, trying to help you live your best life. And you have one more facet, your own Logan. Logan has been the one to figuratively “take down” both Deciet and Remus, and if you count the debate, he helped sway Virgil as well. He’s been the only one able to “keep the peace”. Logan has also been accused of defending dark sides in the past.

It doesn’t make sense for him to have one distinct “opposite”. Rather, I believe his job is to keep the peace, not to counteract a “bad” emotion. And what is the opposite of logic? Emotion itself.

Hear me out on this, I know it sounds crazy. I think that the orange side might be a light side, something akin to confidence. This might be a flimsy theory written up stream of consciousness style, but I think if someone who actually knew what they were talking about looked into this a bit, it might be plausable.

If this was true, this would be more or less what the sides and their counterparts would look like:

Logan

Roman & Remus

Patton & Deciet

Orange Side & Virgil

I know that Virgil is technically a light side now, and that would sway the balance quite a lot. But he started as a dark side. And maybe it’s the same with this orange side, maybe they’ve been swayed just the way he has. Maybe they’re conceited or narcissistic now, maybe they’re something akin to insanity. I don’t know, I’m just screaming into the void here. Might edit this later.

Sanders Sides Next Side Theory/Headcanon

The next side to be revealed is Orange. He represents Depression. He’s Virgil’s older twin brother.

He wears a really big pullover hoodie and baggy sweatpants and socks, not even shoes because he doesn’t care.

His dark side face feature thing (since we’ve all noticed at this point that all dark sides introduced have something on their face) is black lipstick and it’s literally the only thing he routinely upkeeps.

He shows up for a second during a video where Virgil has been summoned but didn’t have time to grab his hoodie. Orange hands Virgil his hoodie that he forgot and just leaves without a word.

The first reaction to him is just Virgil sighing loudly and pinching his nose as he puts his hoodie back on. Virgil tells the others “sorry, that’s just my brother, I forgot this and he knows I need it”. The sides all just take a minute to fully accept that quietly before slowly picking back up on the conversation.

Once they pick the conversation back up, Orange is back to bother Virgil again by sitting on the steps behind him with yarn and is just there knitting for the entire discussion.

During the end card he holds up three scarves with the light sides’ logos and color schemes on them and Orange says “hey, guys, I made you scarves too!” all excited and adorable. The light sides accept them and now own scarves gifted to them by a dark side.

Orange is just morally grey, really tired all the time, and doesn’t express emotions well.

This theory is so cool!! It kinda carries the same energy as the *very unlikely* theory I made about the orange side. (Also those drawings are AMAZING omg)

Imagine... the sides are all having a discussion and Logan says something along the lines of “Good and Bad don’t mean anything” and Patton gets grumpy and says “you sound like one of /them/“ sparking a larger argument where Roman is uncomfortable, Virgil is defensive of Pat and Logan is getting more and more upset until the camera cuts to him and suddenly his tie is a dark orange color. “Fine. Maybe I am one of them. Because I’m certainly not one of /you/.”

Ooooh yes!!

The argument only gets worse from there, as Logan’s clenched fists start to shake, he had only been attempting to tell them something.. to teach just as he was meant to teach Thomas things. But they don’t want to listen to facts, they don’t want to listen to him period about things he knows is right, about things he that he is in charge of. They’d all rather listen to Patton, to pretend that nothing is wrong, and that every day they don’t listen to him… he dies a little bit on the inside.

Before he even realizes it, Roman crosses the space between all of them, coming over to Logan just begging him to take it back. Because if he took it back, then they could forget all about this and go back to normal. Everything would be alright, Roman is practically begging him at this point.

Because who really wants to be one of them? 

Every word out of Roman’s mouth makes Logan’s appearance change little by little.

His glasses rims thin, to the point that they’re half mooned glasses resting on the slope of his nose. His tie loosens and the already bright color darkens to a blood orange color. His clothes look looser and looser, as if he’s put less and less care into how he looked, until half of his collar is popped up and the other half is lazily smooshed down. His eyes darken, to the point of where it looks like gazing into the deepest pit, and having something look right back at you from the darkness within. Something that smiles a sharp-fanged smile of retribution and rage.

Right before their very eyes, Logan changes.

He’s still Logic though, that is something that will never change.

But he is no longer theirs.
