10 reasons we love the Bakhellal Family
For our Midseason Check In - Family Day
1. It’s a nice change of pace to see a functional family unit in Skam after Emma’s perpetually absent mother, Manon’s neglectful parents and Lucas’ piece of shit of a father. It’s nice to see their cosy home and their dinners together. And to know that adults are not totally crap all the time and they can be an important part of a teen’s life.
2. They feel real and complex. They love each other but they also argue. The parents are worried for Idriss’s future and the pressure is obviously getting to him. Imane probably feels her mother can be overprotective and inflexible, but she clearly cares about her daughter’s safety. The mother feels like her children don’t tell her anything anymore. There’s a generational divide. It all feels so relatable.
3. They communicate and have real conversations together. We see them actually air their issues with each other, talk it out during dinner, and although emotions come into play, they’re respectful and listen to each other.
4. Idriss and Imane’s relationship is so real ! They tease each other relentlessly and can be quite mean to each other, often hitting on each other’s sensitive spots like Imane joking about her brother’s lack of future or Idriss humiliating her in front of Sofiane. But at the same time, they have each other’s backs in front of their parents and are so protective of each other. Their conversation on the swingset was so cool.
5. Papa Bakhellal, finally a good father in the world of Skam ! We stan. He’s so supportive of Imane and their interactions are so lovely and healing. He wants her to know she’s beautiful and respected. And he stays firm in his principles but always kind. Also croissants lmao.
6. Maman Bakhellal is a very interesting character. At first glance she seems a bit more of the bad guy, setting stricter boundaries for Imane than the rest of her friends, but she obviously cares a lot about her daughter. It’s sad to see that she doesn’t seem to trust Imane’s friends - but at the same time she probably speaks from her own experience as well. And we love her style with the earrings, it gives such a Girl with the Pearl Earring aesthetic, it’s great (also on a personal note the actress is a total sweetie and keeps sending us love on our Insta account)
7. Their sense of humor. They’re all so funny, from the dad joking about Imane deserving a beautiful guy to his wife’s joke about being surprised they have beautiful children if both parents have to be beautiful for that and Idriss ‘l’ami du petit déjeuner’ - we get where Imane gets her wit from.
8. Representation - it’s great to see a Muslim family on French TV that is multidimensional and loving as well as they are connected by their faith and principles. It’s pretty rare sadly
9. A loving couple - the parents seem to have a very loving, supportive relationship where they communicate with each other and function as a unit. It’s so cute.
10. Imane’s character developpment. Each family member serves to highlight an aspect of her character - her mother represents her principles and her relationship to her faith as well as her more fierce side, her father her more warm, emotional and caring side ; her brother her more childish and competitive side but also the solidarity of being a young Black Muslim in France and the struggle that represents. It’s really well done.
Tell us your reasons ! <3
