Oh My God You Cant Support Your Weight On An Ive Pole! XD

oh my god you can’t support your weight on an I’ve pole! XD

Having had no less than seven surgeries, I am always deeply amused by how romance authors and sick fic creators almost never know what recovery is like. The recovery bay where a bunch of hospital staff is what you become aware of first, not your loved ones at your bedside. And in most cases you are already kinda sitting up so no fond gazes from above. Also you will be too high and groggy for the next day or so, with a nurse stopping by every fifteen minutes. There is not nearly enough coordination in you after even a minor surgery to hold much of a conversation, let alone anything else. XD

Sound points from both of you!

My main issue is just that deaths in Threadfall are way too common in fanfic, to the point that in some there is just no emotional weight or drama left to it by the time we get to someone important dying that way. I've been rereading two of the more popular fics and I like them a lot, but they really do have upwards of ten people dying in every fall. If your fire station had that high a rate of injuries and deaths for every fire, you would fire the person in charge and rework that mess from the ground up for good reason.

And it really isn't canon consistent to have serious injuries and deaths in every fall. Losing several people in one bad fall one year I can see, but there's also riders who retire that need replacing just as much as those who die, and anyone with injury or burnout who needs time to recuperate. After 2,000 years of doing the job, there is pretty heavy implication that by the Ninth Pass the Weyrs do have some good strategies in dealing with Thread itself.

As for Weyrling deaths, if that happened more than once a year at most, I'd have that Weyrlingmaster shoveling shit for the rest of his life. :D

(Having had several working dogs has colored a lot of my perception of how humans and dragons work on Pern. If a dog can do so much without being able to speak to me, I would hope a sapient dragon who lives in my head can do even more. :D I always figure the only reason humans need to memorize locations to go between is to keep them from disrupting the dragon, who is the actual pilot. Also have always thought most writers under utilize the dragons' role in fighting; they're not just cars you throw firestone in and point at Thread, they literally have better eyesight than you! XD)

More Pern thoughts, tl;dr: Threadfall is probably not as exciting as people think, proper Wing formation is like goose flocks in flight, and I think writers who kill a bunch of dragons in every Threadfall and Weyrling class have things waaaaay wrong.

Honestly the most efficient way of fighting it is probably pretty boring to watch. It falls from a static height and the aim is to catch as much of it as possible as high up as can be done. To do that effectively, you really just need to have your Wings flying in a more or less steady formation that forms a line along that leading edge. I imagine it's a lot more like forest fire fighting than any sort of aerial combat.

Regarding how the Wings are structured, I have always assumed they fly in a V formation. The reason geese do this is so that the lead goose generates lift for all the geese behind. So you put a bronze and a few more bronzes or browns at the point of the V to fly most of the fall, with blues and greens fanned out to the side and staggered behind to take advantage of that lift. Your strongest, most agile, most successful dragons make up the topmost Wing with as many other Wings below them to catch anything that's been missed. Instead of high action flying, it's more like 6 - 8 hours of firefighter dispatch meets airport traffic control. Which I think is cool but I'm just Like That. :D

Also! There is no way in hell a Weyr looses a bunch of dragons in every training and every Fall. That would be a failed system in every way and unsustainable. Even one serious injury that puts a dragon out of action every Fall would decimate the ability of the Weyr to do its job. I think a lot of fan writers got too excited about the drama of loosing a fighting pair or a number of Weyrlings without really thinking things through. Todd McCaffrey absolutely did. If your max fighting force is 600 dragons (and I think that's an overestimate on how many one weyr can hold), you are going to need every one of them you can get to keep the spores that eat everything in a 200 foot radius upon landing from hitting the ground at all. Come to think of it, to really do the job well, there probably needs to be a few teams flying scout at a distance to send general reports to the riders on the front line.

Also I don't think a dragon is going to bond with someone who will get them both killed the first time they try to go between. If they can smell your gender pheromones and tangle their consciousnesses with an alien species via eye contact, I think we can assume they're cognizant enough to Impress someone who will maintain their survival when using one of their most basic, innate abilities.

Hhhnnng I'm $15 away from being under $2k in credit debt! Anybody want a discounted sketch? XD zebitsofthegods@gmail.com With a note or you can send me an ask with a ref. I'll do no more than three and when I say sketch I do mean sketch; one character, no background, no revisions, but it will be fun. :) This offer is just for today though.

⭐️ for the director's cut?

Oh man, this is kind of a challenge. I haven’t written much in the past couple years and after getting brain damage last year I don’t remember what’s posted and what’s not without being prompted about a specific piece. XD The last fandom I was writing a lot for was Metalocalypse and all I remember from that is that I wrote some good stuff and currently thinking about the fandom/show just makes me sad.

Uuuuhhhh.... Despite how disconnected things seemed in my MTL series I did have some pretty epic ideas for both. “Florida” was a prequel/sequel (yes both!) to “Sense Memories” and was going to set up a reset of the world where the band gets kind of a “do over” only their reward for saving everyone is that they get a shot at being happy. They don’t reform Dethklok because it’s no longer needed. Nathan and Skwisgaar were going to kind of hook up in the third story and there was a thing where everyone would rush to be there for Murderface when he re-remembered his mom was dead. It was sweet but I wandered away from it, got distracted by like three other rifs on MTL “what ifs” and have since left the fandom, as one does.

Now let me tell you about Homestuck... :D

The sour-faced griffin queen peers coldly out of her flower-draped royal window, one thick hand gripping the delicate frame while the other holds her scepter of office. Her bountiful yellow-feathered belly overflows the sill, her blue and purple silk wrap barely containing an ample bosom. Her plumage is the vivid red, yellow, blue, and white of a scarlet macaw, her black beak as fierce as her royal glare. Purple flowers dangle from the sill to frame her belly while orange and white blooms wind overhead to slightly obscure her blue-feathered crown of office. Jewels and gold chains glitter around fingers and from beneath feathery neck folds.
Silhouetted against a bright magenta moon, a black dragoness with amber horns peers at you with one vivid green eye. She is turned away, mouth slightly open as if speaking, a few teeth just visible in her easy smirk. Long ears with a circular notch on their undersides flow behind her head, just under thick horns with spiral runes. Similar runes are carved in the wicked talons on her visible wing. The amber of her belly scales and the vivid purple of her wing membranes and inner ear stand out against her smooth black hide.
An orange and white tabby cat with blue eyes lounges on the back of a smiling brown and tan German shepherd dog. They’re resting in a dense field of yellow roses with warm pink sunset coloring fluffy clouds orange and purple behind them.
A stained glass style drawing of a blue eyeball rising over a green forest like the sun with a reflection of purple mountains in the pupil
A cartoon styled white man with dreadlocks partially combed over his bald head, sideburns, and a short beard and mustache. He’s wearing a t-shirt with the sleeves ripped and holding a can of beer. Everything is in a bright red-purple palette. He looks thoughtful, lips puffed out to show his front teeth in a vacant grimace. On his forehead a third eye has split open, the wrinkles of skin like eyelids, a runnel of blood sliding down his nose, his left pierced brow tacky with wetness. He isn’t looking at you with his two eyes, but the third one stares dirctly at the viewer.
Sitting cross-legged amid purple pillows and sheets with his weight on one white-clawed hand, a thin ferret man looks over his bare shoulder at you. He holds a tarot card in his left hand. Black silk robes limned in red drape over his waist and elbows, leaving his long back bare. Tattoos of poppies and snaking wires arch over his shoulder blades and ribs, drawing the eye to a series of metal ports anchored to his spine, the largest between his shoulders. Black wires snake from the ports to a a wheel-like device on the ceiling, half obscured by hanging curtains. His long, densely curled black hair is pulled aside to reveal more ports and wires in his long neck and forehead. He smiles coyly, lips closed above a neatly trimmed black beard. One foot rests casually on his knee, paw pads and wicked claws on display, his thick tail curled around his thigh. The red lighting makes his fur pink, the black of his mask pattern, forearms and tail tip in stark contrast.
Two hummingbirds dart toward each other, jewel colored wings outstretched, beneath pine boughs. Purple columbines bloom in the foreground and blue mountains rise behind the scene.
Against a blue backdrop, a fawn-colored mother bunny cuddles her two little ones. The smallest bunny nestles under her right paw while the larger of her two children nuzzles her nose against her mother's. Purple flowers bloom at the bottom, small white flowers hanging down from the upper right.
A scraggly, grungy grim reaper bunny stares through you with red, soulless eyes. His dark green fur, ragged and long, does nothing to hide the wrinkles in his gaunt face. He holds a wicked bone scythe in gnarled hands, it’s blade chipped and stained. His old robes are baggy. The veins in his long ears are prominent and he is lit from behind by an ominous, hellish light.
Lying in a bed or red roses and jewels, a sphynx cat stares forward with one vivid green eye. She is draped in jewels herself: gold necklaces, onyx and topaz rings on the clawed hand resting on her chest, a teardrop topaz resting on her forehead. The rose thorns clutch at her ears and skin. Out of her mouth a rosebud blooms and from her left eye another is in full flower. A jagged, bloodless gash reveals yellowed ribs and another garden of roses where a heart should be.
