Right, library haul

Right, Library Haul

I borrowed 10 books but TBH I will probably read at most 3 of them. Here are the 4 most likely candidates, also guest starring the bookmark my coworker made! It was a gift and she was so proud of them :) I can't wait to use it.

I love cozy mysteries but the last... 2 or 3 I picked up had a problem I'm a little hesitant to admit to... basically I was really uncomfortable with the lack of racial diversity in the books and it made me not want to read them. If anyone has recommendations for cozy mysteries featuring POC (not just appearing as BG characters or like a sassy best friend) that would be great. Bonus if the book is still very much a mystery, instead of.... you know... turning into An Identity Book. I want that good casual but deeply rooted shit. Double bonus if the author is also POC. (although I do have some complicated feelings about the Own Voices label I won't get into here.)

I would give my left arm for one that meets the above criteria AND is that sublime combination of romance AND mystery.

[Mm I should do a post about some of the mysteries I've read / failed to finish recently]

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. [...] The thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes "Boots" theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

book list vs book log

Book List Vs Book Log

Book list

Short entries

Name, author, date finished

Good for broad strokes review of year

Easy to keep up to date

Book log

Longer. Actual sentences. Paragraphs even!

Includes reactions, context, and other thoughts

Good as an aide memoire for specific works

I also keep track of whether books have sex scenes to help me decide if I should recommend certain books to certain people, haha

I keep both! I suspect some people keep one and not the other, or neither, but both works for me :)

"Good heavens, potatoes are worth more than gold!"

"Surely not!"

"If you were shipwrecked on a desert island, what would you prefer, a bag of potatoes or a bag of gold?"

"Yes, but a desert island isn't Ankh-Morpork!"

"And that proves gold is only valuable because we agree it is, right? It's just a dream. But a potato is always worth a potato, anywhere. Add a knob of butter and a pinch of salt and you've got a meal, anywhere. Bury gold in the ground and you'll be worrying about thieves forever. Bury a potato and in due season you could be looking at a dividend of a thousand percent."
