This is DualBrew - a blog on homebrew software, mainly for Nintendo DS family (Nintendo DS, DSi and 3DS)!

What is "homebrew" and how do I use it?

Homebrew is any software unofficially made by hobbyists for closed systems, including video game consoles and handhelds. With homebrew, users are able to utilize their systems in more ways than intended, be it adding new features or unrestricting existing ones, as well as run apps and games made way after system's official support!

In most cases (almost definite for DS family), you are required to compromise your system in order to run homebrew. Here are the guides (which also have notes on what to consider and what it adds to your system afterwards) for allowing homebrew onto your system:

Installing 3DS Custom Firmware (The most powerful option)

Installing DSi Custom Firmware (Convenient to have on a DSi)

Picking a DS Flashcart (Works for all DS family systems, isolated but limited)

If you don't have a DS family handheld but wish to get one, you can compare their features here before buying.

About the blog itself

This blog will usually have long posts about specific homebrew software, major updates in homebrew scene, or guides on certain things that can be done on a compromised DS family console. Screenshots will be provided on actual console when possible (Author's note: I only own a New Nintendo 2DS XL), or an emulator such as MelonDS.

While the blog focuses on homebrew made for DS, DSi and 3DS, homebrew software for other systems may also appear here, especially if it can be run on any of the systems mentioned earlier.

I will try to post at least once a month, but do expect weekly posts or even more frequent ones as well. You may suggest what to write about here by directly messaging the blog or its authors!

Note that this blog does not encourage piracy - the methods above may enable it but this blog will NOT tell you where or how to get official games and other commercial stuff illegally.

With this blog, I hope to shine more light on what can be done with homebrew software, and breathe more life into your DS family console!
