Some time after Ace returned to his family, Yamato (who was now his boyfriend) went to visit.

Ace was a little worried that Luffy would say something insensitive (because he never thought twice before speaking whatever came to mind, and sometimes it ended badly), but to his relief everything went well.

He aproached his brothers later that evening to ask if they were really okay with Yamato, and what were their thoughts on him, honestly.

Luffy promtly said that he liked him a lot, which wasn't surprising, since Luffy likes everyone.

Sabo, on the other hand, admitted that he had been surprised, since he knew exactly who Yamato was - the son of a former dictator, Ace's former enemy. However, after talking with him, Sabo was sure he had no reasons to worry and said that he was happy that Ace had finally found someone he could be 100% open with.

Ace felt bashful, but scratched his head. There was one last thing bothering him.

"And you guys have, you know... nothing to say about the fact Yamato's trans?"

"I'm not prejudiced," Sabo shruged.

"Zoro's boobs are bigger," Luffy added, while stuffing his mouth with food.

Yamato's backstory efficiently did its job and told us what we needed to know, and in a purely storytelling sense it didn't need to be longer. But in an I-love-Yamato sense I do wish it dwelled more on the angst of it all and just how unbreakable Yamato is

For 20 years Kaido tried at every turn to break Yamato and turn him into a tool, and Yamato never relented. His dad starved, abused, isolated, and chained him, poisoned every single act of kindness anyone ever showed him since he was 8. He was an eight year old. And Yamato still persisted in sticking to what he believed in and telling his dad to fuck off. He'd cry and beg because he was a starving 8 year old who was scared and in pain of course he would cry and beg, but still he never gave in. Kaido never broke his morals or his spirit.

Yamato has a backbone of fucking diamond

I like Luffy’s face here, because it finally tells us his thoughts: he did want Yamato to join. For a while we were kept in limbo on that, so I’m happy that’s finally been cleared up

What I love about Yamato is that he seems to have zero interest in or maybe even awareness of the fact that he isn't "passing". People will see the tits almost as big as Zoro's and be like "wait I thought you said you were kaido's son?" And he'll just be like "Yeah! :D" and then everybody just goes "oh, okay" and moves on.

Also fascinated by the fact that every single person that works for Kaido seems to be aware and respectful of Yamato and his gender. Like we seem them calling her a girl in the flashbacks, so did Kaido like put out an email blast to the entire crew one day?

"Attention all: my runaway daughter is still on the loose, and has also decided to become a man. Anybody found harboring or assisting him will be executed. As well anybody found misgendering him will also be executed."
