Im Not A Classicist, But I Suspect One Of The Reasons So Many Of The Greek Gods Are Portrayed So Unflatteringly
I’m not a classicist, but I suspect one of the reasons so many of the Greek gods are portrayed so unflatteringly was less because they were seen as villains than because they represented their domains. Of course Zeus sometimes misuses his power, that’s what a king does. Of course Artemis’s wrath is wild and painful, that’s what nature can be. Of course Hades snatched away a young girl from her mother’s arms, that’s what death does. This is one of the reasons callout posts for some gods comparing them negatively to ‘nicer’ gods are kind of missing the point.

I wish each individual chapter of a fic on AO3 had the date when it was posted, rather than just when the fic was first posted and when the last update was.
That way you can see at a glance how often a WIP is updated, whether it’s fairly regularly or with huge long gaps between chapters; or if the first 20 chapters were posted in quick succession but the most recent couple were posted at long intervals, indicating that the writer is losing interest and may not finish, etc.

Happy International Dog Day
so we don't have AC at work, just these huge ceiling fans all over the place. and i remember the first few weeks i was there i'd look up at them and be like. damn, those are some big ass fans. and then one day i looked up at one that wasn't moving and. you'll never guess what they're called
postal systems and railways are so good. a postal system is like a computer made of people. you hand someone a box, and can be assured that, somehow, after a week, a completely unrelated person will hand it to your friend. they look at the adress you wrote and figure out where it needs to go, then they never see it again. a hundred people pass it between one another, building up order and structure out of our world. technology is amazing. a train is made by people living in the same mud as a million years ago, we just slowly learned and passed on more knowledge about that mud. we found a way, over time, without changing any of the rules of the world around us, to hammer tracks into the ground, to make networks of steel and signalboxes, and we could do it again if we had to. we somehow figured out the rules that existence itself follows and we applied those back on itself. it's all so amazing when you stop and think about it!!
