It was supposed to stay as a blank sketch but I had the brilliant idea to colour it in- now I have to repeat it for the rest of the cast when I make their human versions- bravo face, bravo. AAAAAnyway I'm still in doubt on some of their roles but I did see a reblog bout kingers role in the circus by @bookoramaenderteeth so Imma role with that concept. Also I have no idea what Jax is supposed to be doing, the possible ideas are written right next to the sketch. I have a thing for grabbing the most expressive and we'll made characters and throwing them in my "average-fy" machine and they come out looking boring as fuck

Theory: Shuichi represents the deadly sin of Pride.

Reasons:

The seven deadly sins are made appropriate on the door to the casino and Love Hotel, ‘Luxuria’ and ‘Avaritia’ (Lust and Greed) while the academy has a religion themed floor where Shuichi’s lab is, a lab which bears 52 killing game files for an unexplored reason. The survivors also bear hallmarks of the sins, Maki being Wrath (with her revenge attempt against Kokichi), and Himiko being Sloth (with her chronic laziness). It should also be noted that Monokuma refers to himself as a god at the start of the game.

In the original Japanese, Kaede refers to Shuichi offhandedly as a 'shinigami detective’ in his FTE (localised as 'a male version of Jessica Fletcher’). A shinigami or grim reaper is basically a god of death. Pride is known as the deadliest sin and the root of all evil, and nothing could be more deadly than a god of death.

Shuichi is noted to be both confident by Ryoma and lacking in confidence by Tenko, while the sin of pride is characterised by arrogance and insecurity (when Shuichi gets an answer wrong in trial, he is made particularly nervous by the others’ stares). He is noted to avoid looking at things in detail, but especially the suspicious items in his lab, most likely because they are disturbing, connecting to him and his past. He also lacks enough introspection that he neglects to ever bring up what he remembered of the Ultimate Hunt (when he suggested he would ‘die with everyone else’). What’s more, by the end of the game, Shuichi seems to forget the relevance of his lab’s content entirely, forgetting the information that is contradictory to Tsumugi’s narrative.

The relationship with Kaito is marred by Kaito’s resentment borne of envy, and the two sins Envy and Pride have a very strong correlation with one another. It would appear that Kaito and Shuichi’s relationship has characteristics of codependency, one that allows Shuichi’s root insecurities to never be challenged and thus to stagnate. Example: when he brings up his doubt regarding his actions leading to Kaede’s death, Kaito immediately shoots him down and tries to put the matter to one side so that he can train him. Shuichi notably says to Kaito that he will ‘always depend on him’, while Kaito is aggressive about his support of Shuichi, suggesting to ‘kick someone’s ass’ if they even bear a grudge.

When you lie ingame, there is a strong resemblance to the eyes of Pride in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Additionally, there are two other major FMA references- Tsumugi mentions the price for her power as being 'equivalent exchange’, while Rantaro’s birthday is October 3rd. Both of these characters have labs on the floor that Shuichi is on, also. A side note to the effect that when Shuichi lies, he does so seemingly without any reservations compared to Kaede and Kiibo, who are shown sweating in their Perjury portraits, thus the eyes would be more fitting for Shuichi.

Shuichi’s most determined pose has the shadowed appearance of a villain, while Ouma appears to be contorting a similar pose to his, even with a similarly shadowed appearance. Just as he mimics Tsumugi in his pre-trial portrait, his villainous ‘fingers up’ portrait could also be mocking Shuichi. When he notes that Shuichi ‘uses underhanded tactics too’, he uses this exact portrait to challenge him. (A side note: the emblem Shuichi has bears the appearance of a villain mask).

Shuichi is extremely selfish in the final trial, shooting down Kiibo with the suggestion that ‘hope is the real villain’, rejecting even the idea of hope entirely, a gesture reminiscent of the Ultimate Hunt recollection suggesting he wished to die with the others. The final trial follows Shuichi as he convinces Kiibo, Himiko and Maki to lay down their hope and die with him, even saying that survival means their decision ‘didn’t mean anything’. This suggests that during the sealing at the facility, Shuichi sabotaged the cast who wanted to run away to live, leading them there knowing that they would die.
