Some random historical facts I’ve found while writing Victorian period pieces (pt 1)

Because it being self indulgent I care a little too much about historical accuracy

‘Hi’ didn’t become a greeting until the 1920s

‘Hello’ was first recorded in the 1830s but only as an expression of surprise or a way to attract attention, derived from ‘holler.’ Thomas Edison first proposed it as a greeting for brevity in 1877 as it was faster to say than the common, “Do I get you?” Or “Are you there?”

High fives weren’t popularized till the 1970s!

‘Yeah’ was an American colloquialism popularized in the 1860s.

The term ‘queer’ wasn’t popularized till ≈1914. ‘Gay’ became popular slang in the 1960s.

This was also around the time ‘faggot’ became popular. Before than, since the late 16th century, it was a misogynistic term against women.

In the 19th century it was typically used to regret to widows who would gather bundles of firewood to make a living. This evolution is in the same vein to how ‘sissy’, ‘nancy’, and ‘pansy’ also came to refer to gay men.

However, shortening it to ‘fag’ wasn’t recorded till 1923

The word ‘homosexual’ was first popularized in 1906. Before this they were often referred to as ‘inverts’ or ‘sodomites’

The first mass-produced car came out in 1908. The first steam-powered locomotive came out in 1825.

Gramophones became available to the public in 1892, but they could only store 2 minutes of sound on each vinyl.

Radios were first widely distributed in the 1920s but they were used by military personnel since the early 20th century.

If any of these are wrong feel free to call me out! I’m not a historian just a guy with internet access
