‘Roger, no!’

You were standing at the dock arguing, while his friends were further down carrying equipment to the boat. It was two weeks after your presentation (which you had passed) and Roger had decided to learn sailing over the weekend.

‘For fucks sakes listen.’ You tried to keep your voice low, steady and convincing. ‘They said on the news they highly discourage going on open sea, I saw it on the telly!’

Roger just laughed. ‘Christ woman there’s nothing to be worried about! Steven is a highly advanced sailer, have a little trust in us.’

You looked at him angrily. ‘But you have never done it!!’ Your voice went up half an octave. ‘I won’t let you drown, not on my watch.’ You crossed your arms to put more emphasis on your words.

‘Is little missy worried?’ Steven got behind Roger and grabbed his shoulders, shaking him back and forth. ‘Let the man free.’ He said dramatically, trying to be funny. You felt like you were their bloody mom. You didn’t like it, but you had to do what you had to do, even if they were being such arrogant arses.

‘You heard the man Y/N, we’ll be fine.’ Roger tried to convince you. ‘Plus the weather is only changing around tomorrow afternoon and we’ll have safely reached Guernsey by then.’

‘I wish someone was as worried about me as Y/N about Roger.’ Brian had joined the conversation without you even noticing.

‘I care about all of you. Why can’t you wait till next week.’ You got angrier by the second. It had started with concern but now you were just pissed he nor his friends would listen.

‘Cause there’s no time like the present?’ He tried jokingly.

You put your arms in the air. ‘Fine then, go bloody drown, but you can’t say I didn’t try to stop ya.’

Roger’s smile started to fade a little. ‘Come on love, it will be fine, we’ll be fine! Come here, hug me goodbye.’

‘No.’ You replied, distancing yourself and crossing your arms once again. Now you were angry at yourself too, for being so childish.

He pouted his lips, his arms still stretched making grabbing hands. You waited a little longer to annoy  him before giving in, letting him hug you, but  keeping your body stiff like a statue.

‘Bye sweetheart.’

‘Bye.’ You replied short, lips clenched. That son of a bitch.

‘Bye Y/N’ Brian and the rest of the crew waved, getting on board of the boat.

You wrapped your arms around your body, the cold early spring air making you shiver. One of the boys started to untangle the not on the dock. You wondered if you should stay or just leave, they didn’t care anyway. But you couldn’t let Roger out of your sight. He had started climbing in the ropes and was now high above the ground up in the sails, shouting silly things. It was a nice day, regardless of the cold. The sky was clear, suspiciously so and still pink form the early morning light. The boat started moving now, so you turned around and started walking away. You looked over your shoulder one more time to catch Roger waving at you, blowing you air kisses from high in the ropes. You smiled weakly and waved too before leaving the harbor completely.

That day you tried hard to distract yourself. You started with baking a chocolate cake. Baking always calmed you down. How trustworthy and predictable it was. No surprises. Putting eggs, milk, sugar and flower together always made the same substance. You put the banter in a large bowl and added honey, raw cocoa and vanilla. You preheated the oven and put the cake into it.

It came out beautifully and smelling like a fresh bakery but you couldn’t get anything through your throat. So you just started baking a new one. Lingonberry cheesecake this time. Your roommates also noticed your obsessive baking, they threw you worried looks and asked if you were alright. They weren’t complaining though, as they liked your baking and devoured the chocolate cake in mere seconds.

‘He’ll be fine honey.’ Ally, one of your roommates tried, sitting on the kitchen counter.

You wiped your hands off on your apron. ‘Yeah I guess you’re right.’ You shook your head slightly. ‘I just can’t get it out of my head.’

‘That’s normal hon, just keep doing what you’re doing.’ Sam added, smiling while pushing another piece of chocolate cake in his mouth.

You nodded, smiling softly and turned back to your cake, mixing the lingonberries with the fluffy white banter and crumbling the cookies.

Meanwhile Roger was leaving the harbor. He enjoyed the fresh air in his face, being this high he could still see the harbor in the distance. He had a strange feeling though. Something didn’t feel quite right. Seeing you standing there, on the docks had made him feel oddly sad. Your long flowered skirt fluttering around your ankles in the wind, arms wrapped around your body, you seemed so worried about him. He didn’t get it. He had never seen you like this and it made him insecure as to what he should do with your concern. He didn’t see any danger. Maybe that wasn’t entirely true. Maybe the luring danger was part of the fun. But he wasn’t worried about being killed. He just wanted a little adventure. Maybe he should’ve asked you with. Nah, too dangerous.

There you had it, if it was too dangerous for you, what was he doing here then, shouting from the sails, heading towards open sea?

He looked down at his crewmates. They were chatting away, happy and untroubled. Brian was leaning over the railing, staring into the distance. ‘Brian mate, come up here!’ Roger shouted. Brian laughed, mouthing a ‘no way.’ ‘You should come down you idiot.’ He added then. ‘Y/N will kill me if something happens to you!’

Roger shrugged planning to stay put, but after a while he started climbing down.

He joined Brian at the back of the boat, looking down at the smooth water. ‘Looks like a calm day to me.’ He said.

Brian squinted his eyes. ‘Yes today will be all right I suppose. As long as we reach Guernsey by tomorrow morning.’ Roger couldn’t help but notice a tiny trace of concern in his voice.

The rest of the day you kept yourself busy with cleaning all the rooms, swiping and scrubbing the floors, taking long showers, braiding your hair, reorganizing your closet. You did alright during the day but when you got to bed that night you couldn’t sleep. There was this image that you could just not quite get out of your head. It was a picture of Roger floating peacefully in the water, his long hair spread around his angelface, eyes closed, motionless drifting with the tides. It almost made you cry. You shook your head physically to get it out of your head. Finally falling into a restless sleep.

EVERGREEN LOVE part 1

part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7 , part 8 , part 9, part 10

Summary: This takes place at the end of the 1960’s. Roger and reader study biology in London. Roger comes down to your place one night and finds a complete mess. He tries to calm your stressed ass.

Warnings; super duper fluffy, you’re warned : )

You jumped when you heard a knock on the door. You sighed annoyed, slid off your chair and opened the door. It was Roger. You gave him a quick, tired smile and immediately turned back to your desk.

‘Jezus Christ, what happened here?’ Roger had stepped into the room and was now looking around.

You murmured something about being too busy, without looking up from your textbook.

‘Y/N, it’s a friggin’ tsunami in here. What happened?’ The concern in his voice made you look up from your work. You turned around in your chair and looked around the room.

You shrugged. ‘No time to clean’. Roger shook his head slightly in disbelief. ‘I can see that.’

‘Hey, you have no right to judge, you’re the king of messiness.’ You said, slightly irritated. He was right though. The place was a pig farm. Dishes spread around the couch, empty crisp bags, chocolatebar wrappings, clothes. But you really didn’t have time, nor did you care. So you turned back to your books, ignoring Roger who was still standing next to the door.

‘Is it okay if I open a window?’ He said and started walking towards you. He didn’t even wait for a response before bending over you and your desk to open it. You could feel the weight of his body pressing on your shoulders but ignored it. Once he had opened it, cold fresh air blew into your face. It made you shiver. ‘Roger, it’s bloody freezing out.’

‘Well yeah, but you look like you’re suffocating.’

You gave him an annoyed look. ‘Shouldn’t you be studying?’

‘No I already passed this project last year, remember.’ You did remember.

‘Shall I take you out to distract you for a bit?’ He said smiling while sitting down on you desk, his ass planted right on top of your books. You groaned and tried pushing him off the desk without succeeding.

‘No, I can’t.’ You replied. ‘I started way to late with this project and I have a presentation in two days and it’s freaking me out okay.’ He laughed at your failing attempt to get him off your desk but then his face turned serious. He furrowed his brows. ‘How much have you slept in the last couple of days?’

You shrugged. ‘Not much, couple of hours.’ That was partly true, but this night you hadn’t slept at all. He looked so worried it kind of made worry a little bit too. You felt like crap, there were dark circles under your eyes, you hadn’t showered in days, nor talked to anyone. He teasingly squeezed your shoulder.

‘I think you deserve a break.’ He stated. You shook your shoulder so he would let you go cause you felt disgusting. You wondered if you smelled bad.

‘Are you okay?’ His voice was so soft it made your heart clench a little. You didn’t want to give into this feeling, there was no time for it. But your body thought otherwise, tears starting to burn in the corners of your eyes. You opened your mouth to tell him you were fine but your lip started quivering. You shook your head slightly and it was enough for him to pull you into his arms. And then the sobbing began. First quiet sniffing and then louder embarrassing sobs from somewhere deep in your body.

You felt like such a baby, but the stress, your poor diet and the complete lack of sleep had taken it’s toll. He was rocking you softly back and forth, his arms tightly wrapped around you and murmured softly. Around some point he had started moving you to your bed, you couldn’t remember quite when, but suddenly you were laying down, your face still buried into his chest. His fingers were in you hair, and it was such a comfortable and loving feeling it made you cry even more.

‘It’s okay love, it’ll be allright.’ You suddenly remembered the presentation and the complete humiliation that was awaiting you and you halfheartedly tried to get out of his arms. They were going to be so so disappointed. ‘No. No bloody way.’ He said and pulled you back. ‘You’ll finish it tomorrow, I’ll help ya. You need sleep.’

‘But it’s gonna be so shitty.’ You sniffed.

He looked down at you. ‘Well then I’ll help you to make the shittiest presentation ever. It’s okay.’ His voice had a calming effect on you. ‘I wait for you after and help you forget, we’ll laugh about it. Promise.’ You smiled weakly, a soft sob escaping your throat.

‘Plus,’ he continued, ‘Don’t underestimate me, I’m quite smart.’ His cockiness usually made you gag but now you didn’t mind half as much. You smiled against his chest and focused on his hands in your hair, trying to untangle the messy curls. It was weird cause you were just friends, but being this close felt strangely enough, so damn right. You sighed and your eyelids were so heavy you just closed them. Your head was throbbing from the headache that came with crying this hard but you didn’t really mind. The last thing you remembered was him pulling the blanket that was at your feet over yours and his body and then you finally sunk into a deep sleep.
